The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just a bit of snow down in Yuzawa town since yesterday, though much more falling at higher elevations and up at Naeba too. Kagura news, and it's very good news too... they are saying that almost all of the main Kagura area and the Mitsumata area will be open on Thursday. That's an impressive start to the season and we're really excited about it. None of that faffing about with shuttle buses and short narrow courses open, oh no, not this year. The Mitsumata Ropeway will be taking folks up and there'll be skiing and boarding on offer right there in Mitsumata. Taking a look at the forecasts, tomorrow is expected to be a little warmer after this blast of winter we have had over the last few days (with temperatures perhaps even closing in on double digits in town) and so we can expect at least some of the snow around town to melt away. But it looks like there's going to be a return to colder conditions and more snow by the weekend (particularly up at higher levels), though don't be surprised at rain in town. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Hello from Yuzawa. Not the nicest of weather conditions for this first day of the ski season in Yuzawa. We have had some heavy rainfall overnight and it is still raining now here in town. It is also noticeably milder. Unfortunately quite a bit of that thin layer of snow that we had around town has been washed away. Though not to worry at all of course when we remember that it is still only 23rd November. So, today is the first day of the season at the Kagura resort and sadly it's even raining up there early on. Looks quite foggy too with limited visibility at the start of the day. The resort is reporting 110cm of snow at Kagura and 60cm at the Mitsumata area - that must surely be a record for recent years. Here's the lifts are operating at Kagura today: - Kagura Ropeway - Mitsumata Number 1 quad - Mitsumata Number 3 romance lift - Kagura Gondola - Kagura Number 1 quad - Kagura Number 4 romance lift In addition, moving forward: - Kagura Number 1 romance lift --- scheduled to be operating on weekends - Kagura Number 3 romance lift --- scheduled to be operating at busy times Most of the runs at Kagura and Mitsumata are open and they've even got some park items going by the Kagura Number 1 romance lift. Great to see so much able to open on the first day, just a pity about the weather conditions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was raining quite heavily yesterday afternoon at times, apparently even higher up. It was rather dark too at times, all a bit gloomy. I was driving along Route 17 around 2:30pm and the temperature shown by the road was 12C. This morning there's a lot of fog and low cloud and it is still a bit damp; though cloudy is what the forecast has lined up for us today. It's going to be colder than the last few days and colder still tomorrow. Still not much snowfall on the forecast as it stands so we are going to have to remain patient. We still have a few weeks before a large number of the ski resorts in the area plan to be open, so plenty of time yet. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And we have some fresh snow. Not a huge amount - just a few cm on the ground around town - but things are looking white once again. Yesterday, after I posted my report Kagura were reporting 3cm of fresh snow up there... and this morning they are reporting another 10cm of fresh at Kagura and 5cm at Mitsumata. Temperatures aren't likely to rise much about 2C today so it should be keeping cold. We're probably going to get some sunshine during the day tomorrow and slightly warmer conditions, with a return to snow on Friday. Early next week is also looking positive for some decent snowfall... let's hope it happens. From Saturday, Naeba, the Tashiro area of Kagura, Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai are planning to open. The first two are pretty much definitely going to happen; the latter two will depend on snowfall. With very little snow on those slopes just at the moment, we'll need some decent snow for them to get going. It's not impossible, but I wouldn't bet on it! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Colder this morning and somewhat wet snow is falling at the moment with a thin cover of snow on the ground. Just slightly under 1cm at my measuring point so that's what I'll add to the report. Hopefully this is the start of more through the day today and tonight, though it does seem that we are going to have clearer skies again over the weekend. Might next week be the start of the proper snowfall for the season? The forecast shows potential for that with the little snowmen lined up on the local forecasts and snow on the forecasts shown on our pages too. Fingers crossed. From tomorrow, the Tashiro area of Kagura will open along with the Naeba resort. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. Snow started falling during the day yesterday in Yuzawa. Felt really cold last night and this morning there is around 6cm to add to the report. It's a cloudy and chilly start to the day with sun and milder conditions currently forecast for tomorrow. From this morning the Tashiro Ropeway and Tashiro area of the Kagura resort will be operating and conditions should be good - this morning Kagura are reporting 20cm of fresh snow at Kagura and 10cm at both the Mitsumata and Tashiro areas. Today also sees Naeba opening for the season. They will have the Prince Number 2 Gondola operating as well as the upper Takenokodaira pair lift and course, and two lifts on the lower slopes. You won't be able to ski from the top area to base though. The Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai resorts are now both on standby and are ready to open as soon as there is enough snow... but that will not be today. The forecast is still showing snow in the coming week, starting Monday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's good to see fresh snow on the ground. Not as much as we were hoping for perhaps - I am measuring 6cm. Kagura aren't reporting any fresh snowfall numbers this morning - so much more interesting than 'official snow depths' which are... far less useful (if you ask me). I see Naeba are reporting 10-20cm of fresh snow. So it looks like conditions higher up at the open places should be pretty good. But anyway, snow clouds should be over the region for today and perhaps through Thursday and then back with us on Sunday. As I write this report the snow has eased off a little and there's even a bit of sky on show in some areas, but I am hearing it is snowing just to the north in Minamiuonuma. Patience! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow clouds are still over the Niigata region - though they seem to be delivering more snow to the areas north of Yuzawa for the moment. That happens sometimes. I have another 4cm to add to the report this morning. There will be more at higher elevations of course, and I can indeed report that the Kagura resort is talking about 5-10cm of fresh snow on their slopes this morning. Right now there are actually some breaks in the cloud above Yuzawa and even some blue sky on show, but snow is forecast for the day and it should remain cold and not getting much above 1C. More snow is due into tomorrow morning as well before easing off. No movement from Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai yet. I doubt there is enough snow yet but we'll keep an eye on that situation. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's a very good morning to you all from here in Yuzawa. Now this is more like it!! Loads of snow has been falling in the region since yesterday morning. It's one of those days where it is difficult to put one number on it, but I'm just going to have to go with how much I have measured... 54cm. Kagura this morning are reporting 50-60cm of fresh snow, and I suspect there is actually probably more than that up there. It has been pretty much snowing for most of the time since my report yesterday - sometimes lightly sometimes very heavily and so it has been building up nicely. Snow is forecast for the morning easing off by evening and tomorrow should be cloudy with perhaps some sun. This feels like winter - proper this time - and hopefully we won't see our plant pots in the garden again until April! Excellent. --- Excite resort opening news - as we have it this morning: Maiko Snow Resort have announced that they will be opening tomorrow (Friday). They plan to have their Gondola as well as the two Okusoeji lifts operating - 6 courses will be available. A bunch of ski resorts were hoping to open this weekend and it's full on bata-bata (people running around in panic!) right now with this snowfall arriving and decisions being made. We will be trying to collect as much information as possible today and tomorrow morning and hope to bring you more details in the next report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After that bumper haul of fresh snow on the ground yesterday, we had a little more snow one and off but it didn't amount to much. At times the clouds were clearing and the sun appearing so we got to see the mountains in all their glory. This morning there's some clearer skies over Yuzawa with some cloud. More cloud to the north in Minamiuonuma but we are expecting fair weather today. That heavy snow has done wonders and it looks like things are really going to get started around town this weekend... starting today actually! This morning Yuzawa Park will be part open and so will Maiko Snow Resort and Muica Snow Resort just to the north of Yuzawa in Minamiuonuma. Other resorts will be opening on Saturday morning including GALA Yuzawa, Kandatsu Kogen, Yuzawa Kogen,Yuzawa Nakazato and Joetsu Kokusai in Minamiuonuma. I'm not hearing any confirmed news about Iwappara - will try to update that later today when things are clearer. It's really great to see the ski resorts around town be able to open as scheduled - well, I know Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai didn't quite meet their original plans, but they always set very ambitious target opening dates. Now what we want is lots of regular snowfall to get the base building and everywhere to get open quickly. It is still looking like the next snow is due Saturday night and Sunday. --- Currently open in Yuzawa (official snow depths where available): Kagura Almost all of Kagura is open - Kagura area: 150cm - Mitsumata area: 90cm - Tashiro area: 110cm Maiko Snow Resort Maiko Snow Resort is open from this morning! The Gondola and two Okusoeji lifts are operating with six courses in that top area available. - Top: 95cm Muica Snow Resort Muica Snow Resort are also opening from this morning, reporting over 1m of snow. No word on lift/course details. Naeba Part of the upper and lower areas (not connected) of Naeba are open - Base: 60cm Yuzawa Park Yuzawa Park plans to have the Number 7 lift operating on this first day of the season, with the Number 1 pair lift also operating from Saturday. Iwappara Currently unconfirmed --- Other planned opening dates for ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma: Saturday 16th December 2017 Joetsu Kokusai Joetsu Kokusai have announced that they will be opening from Saturday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. It was a lovely morning yesterday... and then later on... it rained! Grrrr. But, happily we can quickly erase that from our minds because this morning there is a nice new layer of fresh snow on the ground around town. Kagura is reporting 20cm of fresh snow this morning. And so are Maiko. Personally, I am measuring 19cm of snow to add to the report. And it is snowing very nicely at the moment so it should be building up. Interesting that Iwappara are still holding off on opening for the season. I would imagine that with this snowfall, their opening is imminent. After today not a whole lot of major snowfall on the weekly forecast - next up Tuesday? - so it would be good if we could get a decent amount from today. Tomorrow morning we might get some sunshine so it should be a great day to be out on the mountain. --- Currently open in Yuzawa (official snow depths where available): GALA Yuzawa GALA Yuzawa opens for the season from this morning. 6 lifts are operating and 7 courses (Central and Northern Areas) are open. The sledding area is also open. - 90cm Kagura Almost all of Kagura is open. - Kagura area: 180cm - Mitsumata area: 120cm - Tashiro area: 140cm Kandatsu Kogen Kandatsu Kogen is reporting that 80% of their courses are open. - 100cm Maiko Snow Resort Maiko Snow Resort is open with the Gondola and two Okusoeji lifts operating and 7 courses in that top area available. Nighta operations are scheduled to begin from 28th December. - Top: 95cm - Base: 40cm Muica Snow Resort Muica Snow Resort is open with all lifts operating. - 100cm Naeba A large part of Naeba is now open. - Base: 70cm Yuzawa Park Yuzawa Park is part open with the Number 7 and Number 1 lifts operating. - 50cm Joetsu Kokusai - 100cm Joetsu Kokusai is part open from this morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It snowed throughout the day yesterday and heavily at times. Result: an additional 34cm of snow measured since my last report. Kagura are reporting... actually, it doesn't look like they are reporting fresh snowfall this morning (I hope that's not a new policy!) Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm since yesterday evening. This morning the sun is out and there are beautiful clear blue skies above Yuzawa making everything look pretty spectacular. What a fantastic morning it should be to be out skiing or boarding. Still waiting on opening info from Iwappara.
