The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It was sunny and clear today, but as of late last night we had an extra 50+cm on top of that 40cm on Saturday. With nearly a meter fallen, we're starting in style. It did settle down with that sun, but maybe that will just give us a good solid base for further snowfall, which could happen as early as tomorrow (although there is a chance it might be rain). I'll be on more regularly, and I'll have my snow boards (for measuring depth, not riding) out so I have an official place to poke with my ruler. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Good morning skiers and boarders, Windy day here in Furano. About 24 km/h, which is way above the threshold for our sensitive Gondola. They just closed Lift E on the top of the Furano side due to wind. Pretty rare. Everything else open for the time being. The Furano side is more sheltered than the Kitanomine side. Forecast for snow/r@!n this afternoon, as it is quite warm. 7 cm of quality stuff fell overnight, but with the wind, it's been moved all over the place. The upside is to find pockets where it all collected. Sapporo Snow Festival kicks off today. Always fun and worth a trip. Culture-wise, Japan's most famous Taiko drum group is coming to Furano Feb 7-9. That should be pretty awesome. Think Snow. ** Furano Zone Lift B (aka Furano Quad) is closed for the season due to mechanical failure. New braking mechanism must be fabricated.** Furano Zone: Lifts A, C, & D. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We're down to one running area (I think; can't tell from Seki's website or blog), so not only are we at the end of one phase, but one big change today. It's snowing. Unbelievable, but it's snowing (glad I didn't change the tires yet). It's actually coming down pretty good at this moment (8am). Doubt if it will last long, but it would be interesting to see how much falls higher up. Could make for some pretty miserable skiing for anyone who is hiking up, as this kind of snow tends to be pretty sticky (or results in wet slides if there's enough). Time to close out the season.... which sort of petered out there at the end without me actually knowing when our last operating resort (Seki Onsen) finally gave up. Akakan and Seki had planned to keep going until May 5, but there was no possible way to do that (as that snow disappeared about two weeks ago). I sat at home watching the slopes above the ski areas literally turn from white to brown over less than a week, thanks to some strong, warm winds - which continues to blow, for that matter! How to sum up this season? Look to the next, is the conclusion, I think! We just went through an El Niño of the kind we haven’t seen for a long time - not in my 20 years in Myoko, anyway. The fear is that this is the trend for the future (we’ll ignore all the politics and such behind that, though), but on that point, who knows? Some say the changes in climate could bring rougher weather, and even maybe more snow. It’s going to be better next year; that’s my only prediction. But that also means I need to overhaul that regular visitor to these reports, my mighty snowthrower. I think I refilled the tank twice this season, and the disuse means both that the battery died (it was getting old anyway), and there’s lots of rust to take on over the summer. Hopefully he’ll be out there more daily, and showing up in these reports, more often in 2016-2017. See you in a few months! Sorry to be late today, but a little accident at the Junior Olympics going on until today in Akakura (not me, luckily, but some running around to hospitals and such). Anyway, maybe it was a good thing to be a bit behind schedule. The morning was, to be nice, non-descript. It even rained a bit in the Arai area of town. At the moment, though, it is snowing, and that makes us happy. The wind is now coming in pretty strong off the ocean from the north, bringing pretty fine snow with it. Fine, but it's actually starting to build up a bit - could it be that we get some fresh added to our declining snowpack? Not to jinx it, but it's looking pretty good. As always, the end of the 2024-2025 ski season back in May seems like a long time ago. But at the same time, it feels like it was about a week ago. How does that happen? Now that we have survived the (very not pleasant, if you ask me) hot summer weather, we can look forward to upcoming snowy goodness and hopefully a jolly pleasant winter season. We have had a bunch of varied weather conditions recently as the seasons continue to change. It is raining at the moment down at base. But we have been able to enjoy some lovely autumn foliage, and we have also received our first snowfall of the season — yey. That is always very excite. While that first glimpse of snow has now disappeared from base areas, it was still snow. As such, it has a rightful place within these reports. So that's what the initial 2cm reported today is, even if it was from late October. (The reporting system only allows new season reports once we enter November). I am still waking up after my 'hibernation' and starting to get into the right mindset for winter. I have various thoughts to impart, but I will leave those for future reports. For now, though, I just wanted to say hello. It is good to be back. Fingers crossed I'll be able to report large amounts of beautiful snowfall this season. As always, whatever nature decides to bring us, I'm here to simply tell you about it. The good, the bad, whatever; always the truth. I will post further reports here from time to time over the coming weeks to let you know how the incoming snow is shaping up. For the record, the Niseko United ski areas all plan to open on Saturday, 29th November. Anyway, time for some toast! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Yesterday the snow was disappearing fast; it rained; it was unusually warm. Today we have something close to a blizzard; it's cold; there's ice on the slopes. It just keeps getting weirder this year, so let's just roll with it and enjoy what we can. So far today there hasn't been much accumulation - probably five cm or so - but it's coming down pretty steadily. Maybe we've gotten a slight reprieve on the downward slide in snowpack. I think it's actually worse out there than the resorts are reporting (and I'm talking to you, Seki Onsen); I dug a practice pit in the golf course just opposite to Akakan, and found a depth of just under 90cm. Pretty scary to see this at the end of February, with one-third of the season (hopefully) ahead. There could be heavy snow on Wednesday, so there is something fun to look forward to. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A pretty foggy start to the day, after a cold, clear night last night. Fortunately the fog has been rising up the hill, so I can see the top of the lifts from base level (skiing in the trees in fog can be very nice, but whiteout on a big white ski slope is not that entrancing). It's pretty warm, too, hovering right around 0°C at the moment. But light snow keeps on falling - really light at the moment - but the forecast has continuous snow showers or light snow, so it might not be a lot, but it's good. Having written that the fog is moving up, it now has decided to come back down and visit.... but bringing a little more snow with it. I have a feeling the air is kind of pulsing like a wave out there. And now the sun is trying to peek out. Well, it's a mixed day in Myoko! Lots of people heading up to the ski areas, though, so a good day as well. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another day when I need to get out and go before new snow reports are issued - but I'll write this part and hang on to the last minute and put in whatever fresh data there is in the listing below (* indicates an old report). The good news: it's snowing again. As we've seen so much this year, the snow is coming down pretty steadily, but not with the great big flakes that are so common when we're getting a really good snowfall. Maybe that will change through the day, as heavy snow is predicted for later today (luckily, heavy rain is also on the forecast, and we appear to have dodged that particular precipitation bullet). Not much accumulation yet, but if it keeps snowing like it is now we will have a little extra for some snowpacks that actually went down during the week with that sun and nice weather (I told you not to get sucked in by those bluebird skies!). It's still pretty rough for those traveling into the backcountry, as we just don't have enough snow to cover up the saplings. The snow itself became pretty stable this week, following the sluffing after the last big fall. With that sun crust in some areas, though, be careful if we do see heavy snowfall today and into the weekend, as it could form a weak layer and increase the avalanche danger. Generally, a little time and Myoko's moderate temperatures will see these kinds of layers disappear fairly quickly, but that doesn't mean we can't have some persistent problems in the backcountry. Communications is key: talk to as many people as you can, and remember a snowpit is best thought of as a confirmation of information you already have. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We had a pretty nice snowfall over night in Myoko, with about 35 cm of fresh to be snowthrown this morning (I'm actually getting a little use out of my trusty monster machine). The ski areas aren't reporting much additional depth to the snowpack reports, but it did fall. Not really a heavy snow, but of course welcome. Looks like we'll continue to get some light snow later today and on through the weekend, although it's not snowing at the moment. It's kind of a slow news time, to be honest.... the Myoko Police did issue a warning following some injuries and theft on the slopes (including one fatality involving a foreign national hitting a Japanese person), but still not much by general standards. Backcountry hasn't been much of an issue, because there isn't that much snow, and there's not open space to get into much trouble. Still lots of small trees to get hung up in, though. So I'm looking out the window toward some gray, cloud-obscured peaks, wondering what it's going to do next. Kind of an "unh" day, I'd say. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow keeps coming down, even if we haven't seen the big increases that we keep getting promised. Yesterday was a morning of good snowfall, the real Myoko kind (and it was a little colder than I had reported, actually, around -6° even at 10 am). But it didn't want to keep going, and we saw some sun before the snow came back in the afternoon as well. That, too, looked pretty promising, but by the later afternoon the snow had changed to partly sunny skies and some very cold strong winds (made for some especially unpleasant snowthrowing, with cold wind on the nose enhanced with snow flying everywhere). Light snow continues to fall this morning, though, which is always welcome, even if it probably won't build up to the potential 40cm the weather reports were talking about this morning. We're still doing OK compared to a lot of places, but the snow just doesn't want to keep on falling for extended periods of time as it normally would. It's cold, too, with the car thermometer reading -9° at around 8 this morning. The backcountry remains very bushy; we could still use a couple of meters of good heavy snow to finally push all that stuff down and get it under the surface. A sort of test team is out there right now, so I can give some more on-the-scene reporting tomorrow. It is getting better, but nobody's going to be doing massive powder turns for a while, unless this light snow decides to keep falling for many days, which looks unlikely. The freezing line will be heading up the mountain again toward the end of the week, with heavy rain even a possibility on Saturday. If that would just change to a heavy fall of physically heavy snow, maybe we could get rid of that bush and tree problem even faster!
