Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 23cm
Snowfall at base this season 23cm

Posted on Sunday 19th November 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

The first real snow has fallen all the way to base level and below (a full 23cm! Accurately measured with my high-precision tools in an ideal location). So it’s time for that first report for season 2017-2018.

I know there are a lot of people out there itching for that first snow - but remember, too, that there’s a good reason the resorts won’t open for a month. We always get a pretty heavy snow in November that brings down branches and annoys people who forgot to change to their snow tires, but it won’t last. Looks good, though.

For this season:

The big news, of course, is the opening/rising from the dead of Arai, now known as the 'Lotte Arai Resort'. It’s still big, it’s going to be expensive, but beyond that we don’t know that much about who is being targeted. Lots of rumors, not much hard news coming out yet. There will be some off-piste areas open, some not. Anyway, keep tuning in on this one.

We’ll also be adding Kurohime Kogen Ski Park this year. It’s across the border - just - in Nagano, but it’s physically close to Myoko and adds a family-friendly resort to our area.

The snow has stopped falling now, at just around 11 am, but the word is that it might continue for the next couple of days. It’s not impossible that it might stay, and the resorts could open early. It has happened, and SnowJapan will let you know as soon as the word comes out.

Now, back to trying to figure out how to put the chains back on my front loader. And then to replace the snowthrower’s battery...
