The day is starting sunny in Myoko, not too warm, not too cold.
The snow continued on and off through the day yesterday, for a few added cms of white. The clouds are building up, though; off the coast the winds are light and from the south — a clear sign of what lies ahead (that is, rain again). In fact, the forecast has gotten worse over the past few days, with the freezing line predicted to go higher to 2,250 meters on Thursday morning. I guess this isn't that uncommon for February; powder snow often comes back in March!
I got an interesting call from a local friend and crazy skier. Apparently he set off a pretty sizeable avalanche in the sidecountry yesterday, and wanted to share the warning with everyone - and much appreciated, too! After the winds of a few days ago, there is a lot of wind-deposited snow that may be holding together in slabs. He also said there was a lot of whumphing - the snow dropping suddenly as a weak layer under the top layer of snow collapses, a definite sign to be careful. Could be caused by the rain layer, the new snow, changing conditions.
Regardless, it's a good day to be a little cautious in areas where snow has gathered, on lee slopes, on big steep and open faces.
