We got about 30cm, something the forecasts didn’t catch - only about 10cm was predicted. Still coming down, too, although lightly. Another great day on the resorts; a nice reset for the backcountry, too, with some good light snow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Nice surprise this morning to wake up to a little fresh snow. Not a lot, but really light snow, and it keeps falling, so we keep hoping for more. But it’s also really foggy today, just like yesterday from about 10:30-11am. Warmer today, too, although still in minus territory. Not much to add; only that the big Kokutai—the national ski meet—is coming up this weekend. Shouldn’t interrupt too much of the regular resort business, and there is the chance to watch some jumping or cross country or ski racing. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Beautiful, sparkly flakes on the surface of the snow this morning; we got about 4cm in total, but it was of real snowflakes (six branches, about 2mm across, the whole thing). Yesterday’s heavy snow turned out to be very compact and dense, so climbing was much easier than expected for the offsite set. Today is just a really nice, sunny day; a few clouds moving in, and the weather reports say there is a chance of snow. Just have to see how much that warm sun affects the snow surface through the day, especially in the backcountry. There was a lot of snow falling yesterday, lots of wind and blowing.. the total wasn’t as dramatic as might have been expected, especially with drifts covering cars. First time to have real cornices forming outside the building here, too. Not a great sign for up in the hills, where there is almost certainly wind-deposited snow and fresh growth on the cornices that backcountry travelers should be pretty careful about. But the sun keeps trying to peek out, so it should be a great day at the resorts (and maybe not insanely crowded, either, after all the new reports about the heavy snow). I know some people might be surprised with the snow reading for today; I was! I noticed it’s settled a lot already, with a little cone forming on the vertical pole at the center of my snow board showing how the pack is really settling, perhaps because of the kind of crystals that were coming down. Still a lot of snow out there, and maybe more at higher elevations. Noticeably colder than yesterday, too. Myoko style (and its been a while since we’ve seen this kind of good, solid snowfall). It’s also going to be a good, cold day, thanks to the low pressure cells in the Pacific pulling lots of cold air right down from the northwest. Could be windy up high, too (it’s calm at base) - might even get windy lower down later in the day as well. One last day of making a highly educated guess here (the flu must not win!) but one aided with at least one ruler-augmented poke in the snow, if not in the formal snow plot. Happy to say we got way more than the 2cm predicted by Niigata prefecture. That’s good news; also, despite a high-pressure cell off the coast that probably is responsible for today’s slight rise in the freezing level - but only to 800 meters this time - the freezing level is going back down to sea level and snow should continue to fall. The winds have quieted down, which is good news all around (all the lifts are running today, and the really high winds on the peaks yesterday hopefully have calmed for the climbing set). I didn’t get to go out and do my formal measure of the new snowfall (the flu still taking precedence), but got the team to give me an average at right around 10cm of new snow. Better than the Niigata Prefecture forecast of 2cm for the morning. The wind has shifted around to the northwest offshore again, something we see more commonly when we get good snow. That follows some pretty strong winds through the night and into the morning; there could still be strong winds higher up - and this is likely be the reason for several lift closures at Lotte Arai. Our esteemed colleague who usually posts reports is unfortunately unavailable today, so we're somewhat nervously standing in after checking around for information. And here's what we got: Suginohara are reporting up to 10cm of fresh snow in the places where there's the most, and Akakura are reporting 3cm of fluffy snow. It is snowing this morning and visibility is limited. There seems to be a chance of sunshine tomorrow morning along with milder temperatures once again. Hopefully back to colder conditions by the end of the week. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Yesterday was one of the most insane weather days I’ve seen. Heavy fog in the morning, increasing sun and wind through the afternoon, beautiful blue skies around 2 pm and then the wind just started howling high up on all the peaks. Lots of snow tornadoes circling the ridges; tons of snow flying high in the air. It was pretty windy early this morning as well, but tapered off by 8-8:30 or so. It looks like once again our neighbors further north and along the coast are going to get heavier snowfall than Myoko... It’s not entirely bad, though; we do have about 7cm of fresh at base level, and there may well be more snow higher up the hill. With lots of TV reports about the possibility of very heavy snow in Niigata, a lot of people here for the three-day weekend may have decided to head home early. NO lines at the lifts this morning, where it was pretty busy yesterday (like LOTS of people out enjoying the snow and sun in the afternoon). It will be cold, too, so add an extra layer today. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is really beautiful out there today, with an almost perfect blue sky to start out the day. Strong winds on the peaks, though, and a strange pocket of really high winds out there off shore, coming from the southwest. There’s a dark line of clouds out in that directions well: maybe there will be heavy snow coming from that side again today, rather than the more usual northwest winds that bring us heavy snow. It’s staying cold out there, too! Looks like we could get snow, maybe even heavy, later in the day. Lotte Arai now has all the avalanche-controlled areas open. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Talk about an underwhelming snowfall: maybe 70cm, the TV was saying. Most outside reports were also for the heaviest snow on Monday night. We got 8cm. Joetsu City, on the coast, really got hit; one informal report was that the beach got the 70cm we were supposed to get... There was more snow up high through the day yesterday (Akakan, for example, is reporting an additional 20, which is what people climbing above the area yesterday noted, while lower Akakura Onsen added no new snow to its total). All lifts seem to be running, but the bowls on the south side of Lotte Arai (the Mt. Okenashi side) have been closed the past several days. Something to keep in mind if you plan to go out for avalanche-controlled sidecountry.
