The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There was some snow falling yesterday morning down in the village, though it didn't last long and it got a bit wet at times. But this morning I am happy to report that we have some proper snow! First up, here's what is being reported by the ski areas: - Goryu: 25cm top - Hakuba 47: 25cm top, 20cm lower - Happo-one: 45cm (Usagidaira), 35cm (top of gondola) As much as 45cm fresh at Usagidaira? Very impressive. (Hope it's not a typo!) I need to post early today and can't see any changes to ski area operations just yet, apart from Tsugaike not opening as planned due to strong winds. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It's fine and sunny with some cloud around the mountains. 1C. Tomorrow should be nice too. And then, snow on Sunday. I have some really good excite news this morning - the season has started! :) The Telecabin Gondola at Hakuba Goryu opened at 8:30am and their Alps Number 1 pair lift is also moving, with the top Panorama course area open. Hakuba 47 will also be officially part open from tomorrow, though access to their Line E lift will be via Hakuba Goryu (the Hakuba 47 base and gondola will not be open). At the time of writing, there's no word on any opening news from Happo-one or Tsugaike Kogen, the other two ski areas that are ready to go. (If I hear any such news this afternoon, I will update this report). I'll make some changes to the report from tomorrow as things get started. 12:00pm update More news to report! Hakuba Happo-one will be open... this afternoon! Yes, they are going to 'pre-open' from 12:30pm. The Gondola and Panorama pair lift are scheduled to be open. As of 12:00pm, there's already a few people waiting at the base gondola station. The 'Grand Opening' will be tomorrow, when the Panorama Number 3 lift should also be moving. I'm not exactly sure how to explain the difference between pre-open and grand opening. (I'm wondering if the 'pre-open' idea/word might be a Japanese one? I have been in Japan way too long to know any more. Answers on a postcard please!) Note: other information in this report is as per original morning report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We have had some more light snow in the village. Hakuba 47 are reporting up to 5cm around base areas, with gradually less than that as you head back towards the village. Happo-one appear to be reporting 27cm fresh snow and a snow depth of 55cm on the Usagidaira area (shown in the top image below this morning). That sounds good. Unfortunately, I can't find other 'numbers' to report to you. Ski areas seem to be chilling on the 'information updates' front at the moment. Definitely still in low gear, or neutral in some cases! I'm not saying they are sitting around doing nothing, of course, as I am sure they are busy with other things. Still, being an info fan I think we should be getting into higher gears now. :) Fingers crossed there will be more cm of snow delivered today. From tomorrow there will likely be a break in the snow clouds, followed by decent snowfall forecast for Sunday. That looks like it should get things moving... openings early next week, perhaps? We got rain on overnight, but this morning the clouds have cleared, and it's a beautiful morning with just some clouds in places... but mostly blue skies. Around Wednesday and into Thursday, we will probably get more rain down in the village, but it should be snowing higher up in the mountains again. Hopefully, I will have some fun snowy news for you again later in the week. By the way, while Hakuba Sanosaka does plan to re-open this season, there's no official info/details out there just yet. It might get heavy too and that is not going to be kind to our precious snow. Happily tomorrow will be clearer but there's more rain due on Sunday. Hmmmm. Both today and tomorrow should bring us some very pleasant and fine weather... the kind we expect over the Golden Week holidays, in fact! Temperatures today at base will be rising above 20C. When I walked past there 15 minutes ago, there were already people gathering around the gondola station at Happo, looking for some first turns. Snow is definitely getting less by the day, but it's still out there to enjoy. (That lower run at Hakuba 47 has now closed. That was a very good showing indeed). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning my Hakuba-loving friends. Today (Sunday 8th May 2022) is the last day of the season for the four ski areas that made it until today (Happo-one, Goryu, 47 and Tsugaike). We finish the season with mostly blue skies and some cloud. A big shout out to the folks working hard to keep everything open until this late date. Otsukaresama deshita. It has been a long season. It has also been a very good one, as we were blessed with some really great snowfall on the mountains this year. Good snow makes everything easier for everyone, including myself! There's all sorts of interesting snow data for this season and previous seasons within this report section, so do be sure to check it all out. From what I am hearing, ski areas saw an improvement in visitor numbers this season. Domestic skiers and snowboarders have been eager to enjoy the snow and apparently less worried about covid. (Voluntary) mark-wearing is still the norm here in Japan, but more people are getting out and about. Of course, it is still not possible for overseas visitors to come to Japan with the international borders closed to tourists. (I'm sure you knew that). The abrupt disruption to the growing inbound market has without doubt made a significant difference to Hakuba in the last couple of years, and it still feels like a shock. There are some cautiously encouraging signs that there might be some modest border easing in the near future, though nothing has been confirmed yet. Hopefully that goes well and is seen as a success, and that we can realistically hope that many more people will be able to visit for the 2022-2023 winter season. It might well feel like a shock again when foreigners are allowed back in Japan, but I'll be very happy to feel that way! I'm going to sign off for this season. I really enjoyed reporting the season, but I am now looking forward to a rest. I will try to enjoy the summer months without melting, and then I will be back in November as the 2022-2023 season approaches. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. Bit of a dusting of (wet) snow down close to base areas. I am being kind and awarding 1cm to the report to encourage more! Ski areas are reporting 5-10cm on the mountain. It doesn't feel particularly cold this morning and it will be relatively mild day. That might mean the current snow turning into rain. But let's hope not. Expect some sun tomorrow, and continued mild temperatures in the coming week. Hakuba 47 is back to being almost fully open for the weekend - and hopefully this time they will remain open during the week. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Some fresh snow down the the village, but lots of blue sky as of 9am. Happo-one is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall up at the Usagidaira area. At the time of writing a few of the planned lifts at Happo-one are on hold due to wind (just the Gondola, Panorama and Kokusai Number 3 lifts are moving). Hakuba 47 and Hakuba Goryu are both are reporting 20cm of snow on upper areas. 47 is reporting 5cm lower down. By the way, it looks like 'Tsugaike Kogen' is now officially known as 'Tsugaike Mountain Resort'. That is つがいけマウンテンリゾート in Japanese - a mix of hiragana and katakana. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Greetings! Ohisashiburi desu ne. It's autumn and Hakuba is looking particularly beautiful. It looks even more beautifully beautiful in winter, of course. Some of the ski areas around here will be (at least partially) opening up as soon as there is enough snow. The plan is for that to hopefully be the end of this month. It will all depend on the snow. Everyone reading this will surely know this already, but the Japanese borders are not open yet to tourists. We all hope that will situation will change sooner than later, but when it will change... don't know. The case numbers have really dropped down really low here in Japan over the last few weeks, so hopefully that will continue, everything will continue to brighten up and we might get some easing off! I will be reporting on that situation if and when, of course. So yes, I will be with you once again for the 2021-2022 season, and daily from December. I will post from time to time before then with updates as the season approaches. Here's to a particularly snowy winter. It's pretty warm too even early. And we might get some rain later on. Actually, I need to update that - it has started raining since I started putting this together. Back to some sunshine tomorrow.
