Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 140cm Weather overview Clearing up, sun Wind Slight Temperature -1C base / -6C top Visibility Very good Posted at 10:42am on Thursday 20th December 2012 This is an archived report We probably got around 15cm of new snowfall since yesterday, and while it was still snowing on and off in the region - especially to the north in Minamiuonuma - earlier on, right now the clouds have been clearing up and the sun is out. The local forecast still has snow for today, so the clouds could well come back. According the the lastest forecast, a brief spell of minder conditions is due on Saturday and town and lower slope areas may well see rain but from Sunday a cold front that brings with it some potentially heavy snowfall is due to be with us. Resorts around town that are open remain only partly open as we wait for that heavy snowfall to really get things going. The snow of the last few days has definitely made conditions better though. A few more resorts plan to open tomorrow - Ishiuchi Maruyama, Yuzawa Park and Muikamachi Ski Resort - followed by some more in the region opening on Saturday. Details below. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 125cm Weather overview Cloudy Wind Moderate Temperature -3C base / -9C top Visibility Fair-poor Posted at 8:41am on Wednesday 19th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Now this is better! After the wet of yesterday, we are back to snow this morning. Kagura is reporting 30cm of fresh snow and here in town I'd say there's 15cm or so, give or take. It is colder too with temperatures down to around -3C in the town here and unlikely to rise much above that during the day today. It was calm overnight but there's a moderate wind as well blowing around now, though a quick look round the resorts and it doesn't seem to be affecting lift operations. That could of course change. Anyway snow lined up for today and into tomorrow so the more the better. I'll update this page later this morning once the local Niigata snowfall forecast has been released. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 105cm Weather overview Cloudy, rain Wind Slight Temperature 4C base / -2C top Visibility Fair Posted at 8:55am on Tuesday 18th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . This morning light snow is falling high up at Kagura, but it is raining in town and in lower areas. Lots of the snow that was around last week has now unfortunately gone. So not what I wanted to report this morning, but we are hoping that it will be snowing before long as the temperatures drop as the day moves on and snow is likely into tomorrow as well. The forecasts don't seem to be predicting huge dumpage though. I wish I could bring more exciting news this morning. Some of the resorts that are part open around town level are somewhat struggling with a thin base. No need to worry though, we are still in mid-December - it's still early days. And we all know how the snow can and does fall in this area once it gets going properly. It probably won't be long before some (silly) people hope for it to stop snowing! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It was raining for most of the morning yesterday, quite heavy at times, though it did ease off in the afternoon and we were left with a cloudy day. It is around 2C this morning in Yuzawa and the sun is out. Some cloud hanging around bit it should be a fine morning here, with temperatures rising to around 7C later on this afternoon. The only real resort news I can find this morning is that Naeba will continue to keep the Prince Number 2 gondola open during this week as yesteday. Generally though, while some places are part open, the snow we did have has taken something of a hit and we wait for winter to properly kick in. It still look likely to get colder tomorrow and we will perhaps get some snowfall, though nothing major. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 105cm Weather overview Rain, sleet Wind Slight Temperature 4C base / -1C top Visibility Fair Posted at 9:50am on Sunday 16th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . The sun was out for pretty much all of yesterday and it turned out to be a lovely day. We haven't escaped the rain though, as it has been raining since early morning in Yuzawa. It does seem to be trying to snow so looks like sleet coming down at times and indeed higher up the mountains it is snowing a wet kind of snow. But the best we can hope for here now is damage limitation I think and that it eases off quickly. It is a mild 4C in the town at the moment. Tomorrow the sun should be out and clearer skies though it will probably stay quite warm. Wednesday seems to be when we can expect it to get colder again and while we might see dustings of snow, there is no major snowfall on the horizon through until Friday as the forecast stands. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Today marks the first day open for a number of ski resorts around town. It's a cloudy start to the day but quite bright with the sun even casting shadows at times - and more importantly the rain that was forecast is holding off for now. In fact the rain has dropped off the forecast for today, though hanging about as a chance into early tomorrow. Hopefully we can avoid it. It is a very mild morning in the region, currently about 7C, and it looks like it will be Wednesday before things get much colder again and for decent snowfall to be with us. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 105cm Weather overview Clear and sunny Wind Slight-moderate Temperature 3C base / -6C top Visibility Excellent Posted at 9:18am on Friday 14th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . The sun is out and we have blue skies all around the region this morning - it has certainly started off as a beautiful day and may well be until the lifts close though cloud is due to move in later on. It is relatively mild too with a temperature of around +4C here in town early on, and a high of +7C likely. Up at Naeba, they are now operating the Prince Number 2 gondola and opened the Daishamen course, so you can now slide down the mountain to base. It is still fairly limited though as they wait for more snow to get things open up some more. This morning, Iwappara has opened for the season with just the No2 and No3 pair lifts moving. From tomorrow I can confirm that Yuzawa Nakazato, Yuzawa Kogen, Kandatsu Kogen, Maiko Snow Resort and Joetsu Kokusai all intend to part open up for the season as well - so it is great to finally get lifts moving near town level. Even though they will all likely be part openings, it feels like the season is about to start proper. We're still early as well. The forecast for the weekend still tells us there's a chance of rain, but happily at the moment it does not look like it will be a consistent and heavy downpour. It still looks like it will be rather mild again though tomorrow, so all we can do is hope for the best. Yesterday it was on and off, and in the evening there were some really nice big snowflakes coming down from the sky. About 70cm of untouched snow behind SJ World Headquarters in Minamiuonuma. This morning light snow is still falling though it isn't the kind that is going to give us big numbers of new cm. It should be easing off later on in the day as well and after that we might be done with snowfall for a number of days. Tomorrow the sun is likely to make a special appearance and then on Saturday unfortunately it looks like there is a good chance of rain in Yuzawa. Not the best weather for those resorts planning to open on Saturday but I am sure that won't spoil all of the fun. Fingers crossed it will be minimal. Clouds eventually moved back in and overnight there has been some new snowfall, up to 10cm and Kagura reporting up to 20cm. Right now it is snowing lightly but my colleague just to the north in Minamiuonuma tells me that is is snowing nicely there now with some big flakes of snow so there's some snow left in those clouds. Once these clouds dry up though we are likely not to see much snowfall for a period. There's even some rain lined up for the weekend currently on the forecast, so it's be good if we could avoid that. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . More snow has fallen since yesterday. I have had to move about 20cm off the top of the car last night and there's another 10cm or so on there this morning. The snow has eased off now and we have a curious mix of weather in the region. A look at the webcams shows quite clear and sunny conditions in Naeba with a lot of blue sky, with some of that blue sky over Kagura as well and the sun shining down on the main slope. It's still cloudy over the main Yuzawa town area though at the moment. Actually the forecast tells us to expect cloud and light snow, so we'll have to see whether that happens or whether the clouds are indeed clearing up. We do seem to be moving on from this considerable snowfall we have had over the last few days though. There's a nice amount of snow hanging around the town area now which is great to see. All good for more resort areas opening up this coming weekend. Opening, lift & other notes Kagura is mostly open and part of Naeba is also now open. Wind Slight Temperature -1C base / -10C top Visibility Generally poor Posted at 8:32am on Monday 10th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa and what a good one it is as well. Winter feels like it has suddenly properly arrived. Both in Yuzawa and neighbouring Minamiuonuma, we were promosed lots of snow for the weekend and it was looking like we might have been left out of the fun but since yesterday afternoon the snow was turned on and by the evening I had to move 30-40cm off the car outside my house. This morning an additional 15-20cm on top of that. It seems that Kagura resort got themselves 70cm of new fluffy snow, according to their official snow depth numbers, while Naeba are reporting that 50-80cm snow fell on their slopes since yesterday. So, basically a lot of snow has fallen since yesterday, and it is still falling now and likely to continue all of today and at least into tomorrow as well. With most resorts planning to open from next weekend, there's no big change in resort operations around town this morning as far as we can tell but this snowfall will of course bode well for proper openings next weekend. The Tashiro part of Kagura is actually closed this morning due to weather conditions. Opening, lift & other notes Kagura is mostly open and part of Naeba is also now open. Earlier on, there was actually lots of blue sky up there and the sun was out, though since then the clouds have moved back in and I am glad to report that it is snowing again. I was talking with a friend who lives nearer Niigata city to the north and he said that they had 20cm of snow, so perhaps it's one of those 'satoyuki' (snow on the plains) things that we see a few times in the season. Hopefully the snow will see fit to move in on the mountains soon. 5-10cm of snowfall is forecast between now and late afternoon in the region, with snowfall likely to continue into the week. Would be good if it turned into that blizzard we were expecting. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow morning.
