  • Nozawa Now: Saturday 21st December 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 67cm Posted on Saturday 21st December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. A bit more snowfall this morning with between 5-7cm reported on the upper parts of the resort and just a bit down below too. It is cloudy at the moment with light snow trying to fall still at higher elevations. Hoping for more snow today and tomorrow. 11am this morning is the Grand Opening "Opening Festival" for Nozawa Onsen resort, to be held near the top Nagasaka Gondola Station. There should be some sake on offer and no doubt some other goodies and probably your change to shake hands with the Nozawa Onsen mascot character. Perhaps worth a look if you are up there when it happens. There are more lifts and courses open from this morning and it's now easier to say which aren't moving than which are moving. See below for the latest there. Courses wise, the area to the right of the Nagasaka Gondola as you look from the village - including the Skyline course - is not yet open. Other than that, most of the main runs of the resort are open from today. Today is the first day of the three day long weekend in Japan and so it should be quite busy today and tomorrow especially. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa and I'm glad to be able to report some decent snowfall overnight with the resort reporting 15-20cm over the mountain this morning. Yamabiko is back up to 2m snow depth. It's good to see a nice new fresh layer down here at base too. Visibility not so good this morning as the snow continues to fall though it should ease off later today and we might get to see some clearer skies tomorrow morning. It's not so cold this morning and hovering at just over 0C as of 9am, and probably will just get colder this afternoon and overnight. Still busy here and it will be over the weekend as well. Things should be getting back to normal from Monday after the New Year holidays. All lifts go! I am about to get out on one myself. Should be great. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 45cm Snowfall at base this season 205cm Posted on Friday 10th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Now this is more like it. Hold on, I'll use capitals. THIS IS MORE LIKE IT! Can you tell how happy I am to be able to report some very nice heavy snowfall this morning? Yes it was coming down yesterday and by 4pm the resort was reporting 15cm around the mountain, but we woke to lots more snow. Here's what they are reporting on various parts of the mountain since 3pm yesterday: Yamabiko - 30cm Uenotaira - 40cm Hikage - 35cm Nagasaka - 35cm Karasawa - 30cm So that means in places there has been over half a metre of snow. The snow depth numbers have zoomed right up this morning as well as you would expect, with Yamabiko now reporting 260cm and Hikage on 145cm. It's good and cold as well this morning. It is still snowing and should be (on and off?) for the day and beyond though some local forecasts have the snow easing off somewhat. Whatever, the snow clouds should remain closeby and I'll let you know every morning anyway. Conditions should be top notch this morning. Hurray! Enjoy but remember to take care out there in those deep conditions. Visibility is generally poor, so know where you're going. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday we got another 15cm or so of new snowfall on the mountain during the day. Snow eased off during the night though and they have done a runner as this morning it's clear blue skies over Nozawa. A beautiful morning. It's also a very cold morning as well, with the temperature about -7 degrees now. The resort have just reported a temperature of -12C on the top Yamabiko area. Heavy snow is still there on the forecast and due to be falling by the end of tomorrow and through Thursday. We might have to put up with some rain at base before the snow, but it should be worth it. Hopefully we might get a run of consistent snowfall right through into the weekend and really bulk up the amount of snow we have here. I very much look forward to it. For now though, it's a beautiful day to be out on the mountain and definitely one to be enjoyed. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Last day of the new year holidays and today will likely get less busy with people returning home. There's still a lot of people around this morning though and those going up onto the slopes will be greeted by a new layer of snow. OK so how about that snow? Well, including the snowfall during the day yesterday the resort is reporting new snowfall since my last report of 18cm on Yamabiko, 15cm on Uenotaira, 16cm at Hikage and 6cm on the lower Karasawa. Light snow early this morning but the forecast for the day is for mostly just cloudy conditions. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The sun is out this morning over Nozawa and we have lovely (almost) clear blue skies. Nice and cold. Yesterday was more about the snow and it was snowing from early in the morning, quite heavily at times. The resort recorded between 5-15cm of snow between 8am and 4pm during the day (interestingly with the 15cm in the Hikage area, not top Yamabiko - which recorded 5cm). Wind may have played a part there though. Anyway there's no new snowfall this morning since yesterday. It should be a very fine day, with perhaps a return to snowfall tomorrow. • Nozawa Now: Saturday 11th January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 215cm Posted on Saturday 11th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . You know when things are going good when you hear people complain about 'too much snow'. Yes I heard that silly comment a few times yesterday. It was a great day though, seriously. Not only did we have all that new snow to play in all over the mountain, but the clouds cleared up in the afternoon and we had blue skies over the mountain for a while... days don't get much better than that. The heavy snowfall transformed many parts of the resort and was just what we wanted and needed. Curiously this morning the resort is only reporting 5cm across the mountain - apart from Uenotaira on 20cm. Add that to the 5cm or so since yesterday morning and we have another layer this morning. The latest forecast is for cloud/snow today. The poor visibility up top will likely clear, though perhaps not in the spectacular fashion it did yesterday, maybe more just cloud. Tomorrow sun is forecast so it should be a very good weekend. The only thing to mention is the crowds. It's the first day of a three day long weekend in Japan and one of the peak times of the snow season. So there are going to be a lot of people in Nozawa. A lot. Early starts are highly recommended to get out there early before the main crowds. We do of course have the famous Fire festival on the 15th January as well, but that's mid-week (Wednesday). The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A good morning from Nozawa. It's Sunday and it's the second day of the three day weekend in Japan.... and Nozawa is bustling. Just a thin new layer of snow since yesterday with the top Yamabiko runs reporting 5cm and 1cm on lower slopes. It's a fine morning as well. Cold after a low of around -7 overnight and at 9am around -5C at base. Top runs at -8C as of 7:30am. It's bluebird today as there's quite a bit of cloud hanging on but lots of blue sky and the sun shining down on the slopes. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 242cm Posted on Monday 13th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After seeing the sun and a calm day yesterday during the daytime, snow has been delivered for this morning. 20-30cm of fresh snowfall is being reported from the different areas of the mountain this morning and I am happy to have to get out with a shovel once I have posted this report to move the 25cm or so outside. It's near on whiteout conditions on the upper areas at the moment as the snow continues to fall. -4C at the moment and it's unlikely to warm up today at all, even if the snow eases off as is forecast. Today is the last day of the long weekend of course, and things seem slightly less busy this morning. Expect many more people to be moving on out around lunchtime. From tomorrow we are probably going to have clearer skies over the region, at least not much in terms of snow. Even so, it does look like it will be keeping cold, which is what we want. So decent weather conditions likely for the upcoming 'Dosojin' Fire Festival, the main event which is on Wednesday evening, the 15th. Preparations are underway for this popular annual event in Nozawa. And of course there will be people arriving in Nozawa again to experience it. To sum up the festival... 42 year olds climb atop a wooden shrine protected by the 25 year olds, as the rest of the villagers carry out fire attacks trying to burn down the shrine. Or something like that, but much more. It is ranked in the top three fire festivals in Japan and is always be a great spectacle. Wrap up well and enjoy the festivities in the village. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A good old heavy dump of Nozawa snow is always wonderful to witness and the last 48 hours or so has really delivered. Heavy snow yesterday following on from the overnight snow with 20-35cm of additional snowfall being reported by the skijo across the mountain. Just totting up the numbers... Some of the weekend crowds may not have appreciated the snow conditions, but this morning will surely be one for everyone. We have clearer skies this morning, the sun is already starting up and it looks like it will be a fine day. Sorry, make that an awesome day. And regular readers will know that SnowJapan doesn't like hyperbole in it's reports --- I just reckon that today should be one of the days of the season. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa and welcome to the weekend. The village was bustling last night as people arrived for their weekend fix - it's going to be another busy one here! A cold and icy start to the day with the temps down to -8 degrees as of 8:30am. The resort isn't actually saying that the top is much colder than the base which is unusual. The sun is out and it's a fine morning. Happily we have some fresh snow to play in... those getting up there early will have anyway. 5cm across most of the mountain during the day yesterday and this morning another 5-15cm of fresh snow to report; with 10cm reported from Hikage and Nagasaka and 15cm reported on the Uenotaira slopes. There's some snow to shovel down in the village as well this morning which is always a good start. As good as news of fresh snow is, we want more. Obviously. Tonight it should be snowing and it's looking good for a decent dump of snow overnight so I am looking forward to reporting that in my next report. Doesn't look like it'll be prolonged though with clearer forecast for Monday but back to decent snowfall around Tuesday. So things are looking promising. All lifts are go! Have a fun weekend. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 252cm Posted on Tuesday 14th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Nozawa is reporting 10cm of fresh across the mountain this morning, and there's about that down at base. I can also report less people lining up for the gondola this morning, which people who are staying on after that long weekend will surely be pleased to hear. It was a busy weekend. Now that we are back to a normal weekday, a few lifts are stopped as noted below but that is not affecting courses that are open. But I think also a good one with some fine snow conditions.
