The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The wind and snow are gone, and blue skies and sun are here again. After a day fighting with snow and blasted by wind, it is nice to have a good clear view of the mountains. Enjoy it while it lasts; low pressure is moving in; there's a band of dark clouds out over the ocean, and snow should be back on by tomorrow at the latest. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I said something was going to happen yesterday; unfortunately that meant some rain late in the day. Fortunately, this turned to snow by morning, and is really picking up, along with the wind, at the present time. We could use a good coating of powder; it's pretty icy out there today on the slopes (and in the trees as well!). Again, keep an eye out if the wind really does get strong and deposits a lot of new snow on top of the hard base—things could get dicey off the ski areas. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A lot of new snow this morning; it started about 8 last night, and has been falling pretty steadily since then. Our season of strange snowfall continues, though; it's not that cold, the snow is pretty heavy; we didn't have wind earlier but now it's pretty gusty at moments.... not super-light powder, that much is for sure. The temperatures are all over the place; the car tells me it's -1, and that's what I'm sticking with for your base temp today. • Myoko Now: Tuesday 3rd March 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 1423cm Posted on Tuesday 3rd March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Good morning, and sorry not to have reported yesterday - I was involved in a rescue up on Mt. Maeyama, in front of Myoko. As usual, the media had the word "Backcountry" up like it was something scary; in fact, the woman who was injured and her team didn't do anything wrong, really. Maybe a bad choice on the weather, but they did everything else right for a stay overnight until rescuers got there. I recently saw a figure on how many people die in the ocean every year, but no news reports put "Free Swimming" in big purple letters or wonders why people don't just stay in the pool.... take care, be prepared, and go out there I say. End of rant. We had a little over 20cm of fresh snow up to yesterday. There was a lot of wind, and a lot of windloading of slopes (to go back to the rescue, it was too windy for the helicopter to do a pickup). Nice and quiet and a little bit gray today. A nothing is going on, good day to just go out and ski day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow has started to fall, although it's not all that heavy yet. A bit if wind, too - but things look to get much more interesting from later today/tonight. The snowfall may pick up as the winds really come blowing in. If it's as high as some weather sites are predicting, expect some closures of the lifts, especially the gondolas at Akakan and Suginohara, and the No. 3 at Suginohara (which, sorry, I misidentified yesterday as the Akakan No. 5 having shut down due to wind, when it was Suginohara). There is a super-big low pressure area forming off of Hokkaido, which will bring some very strong winds across the Sea of Japan. It will be nice to have some fresh snow to ski on, but it might be a day or two until it's calm enough to enjoy it. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . An early start today, so a report without new information from the resorts. A nice bit of powder overnight - not too much, maybe 25cm - but at least something to cover the ice. Some pretty high winds during the night (got me up and listening). It's an interesting situation out there right now; light snow is falling at base level, although we can see blue skies above the peaks, which occasionally pop out of the clouds. To the north, it's still pretty cloudy and gray. Seems like a good idea to get out and enjoy; a high pressure system is coming in, with the threat of - dare we say it - rain tomorrow. Hope it doesn't work out that way... • Myoko Now: Wednesday 11th March 2015

The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow has continued to fall, but not really in the "heavy snow" class - well, it is pretty heavy, in that it's full of water—pretty heavy pow today! Probably another 20cm on top of yesterday's 20. One nice thing was that we didn't see the high winds that areas closer to the ocean and Hokkaido had yesterday (maybe Mt. Myoko shielded us to the west). Nice light snow continues, though, and it is nice to have things white and clean again. Akakura Kanko: 460cm, -8° (top?) • Myoko Now: Monday 23rd March 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1518cm Posted on Monday 23rd March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The SnowJapan forecast had it exactly right; the warm weather and sun (and sunburn for me) over the weekend has given way to winds, colder temperatures and snow! We could see it coming from about 5pm yesterday, as some big clouds started to form over Mt. Myoko. The winds have now moved to the west on the coast (mostly northerly around here, due to the mountains) and we probably have 5-10 cm of fresh and it's falling pretty well at the moment. You kind of feel like you don't really want any more snow at some point, but it almost felt like the first snowfall again this morning. Nice to have things white again, too... We're also entering the last week of scheduled lift operations at some of the resorts. Suginohara will open just the gondola next Monday and Tuesday, and then close. Most of the rest are open at least until early April—more to follow as they post these dates. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's another bluebird day in Myoko - although yesterday those blue skies turned to impenetrable, soupy fog by lunchtime. Literally visibility of 5 meters or less. A little snow also fell, which was nice—probably 10cm of extra, just to keep things pristine. Today looks much more likely to remain sunny and nice; a high-pressure system has definitely moved in, the winds are down, and it is warm in the sun. It's going to get much warmer ahead, so today would be a good day to get into the snow and enjoy some pre-slop soft snow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The day started really nicely today, with some fresh snow and beautiful blue, clear skies. It's clouded up a bit through the morning, with a bit of wind coming up as well. Still a nice day to get out on that fresh snow (...won't be that many more!). I'm out in the area today (there's a new cat ski operation at the former Arai resort; hopefully something we can report on next season!), so I can't read the town's snow report, but it's pretty much the same as yesterday, plus 10cm of fresh. Snow showers continue to fall, although we're getting occasional moments of sun as well. Nice now, but not enough to fire up the mighty snowthrower (as much repair as those things require—good to use sparingly. And it will be time to dig out the north side of the house soon enough). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1493cm Posted on Friday 13th March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's been a funny day today, with sun and snow showers alternating with each other (and sometimes coinciding). About 10cm of fresh on the ground this morning as well - good, solid, high-moisture, late season snow! Always welcome, of course... Looks like another day of snow, then some clearing weather - and then spring seems to be on its way! The freezing line is going way up the hill in the coming week, so the snow will be soft, at least.
