- Yuzawa Now: Thursday 2nd January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this seas 375cm Posted on Thursday 2nd January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The clouds cleared again yesterday, leaving us with another very fine afternoon in the region with a lot of blue sky and sunshine, and mild too. It is snowing this morning. Once again it's not particularly cold and the snow is on the wet side for the moment, but that is of course better than rain. (We might get lucky and avoid wet today; maybe not. Forecasts differ on that score). It should be snowing at higher elevations, though, so you know where to go to definitely avoid it! Visibility is limited this morning. Weather conditions aside, we can probably expect popular ski areas to be busier today than they were yesterday. The busy period traditionally continues until at least Saturday, with New Year visitors start making their way back over the weekend in time for the start of the work year on Monday. The snowfall number this morning is from post-report yesterday morning plus the small amount that is now sticking this morning. ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 2nd January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 3rd January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this seas 378cm Posted on Friday 3rd January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing yesterday, but for the most part it was rather half-hearted and a bit on the wet side, so it didn't really amount to much. Visibility was generally quite limited, which probably put some people off. The snow quality improved as you headed higher up away from town. In the end, there is only 3cm to add to the report this morning after a bit more of a dusting overnight. Higher areas presumably received a bit more than that, but I wouldn't expect much. (Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5cm of fresh). The Yuzawa Snow Link connections open up from today. That includes the lift and course connection between the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa and the top of Ishiuchi Maruyama. The Southern Area of GALA is also opening from today (two courses - Batman and Eliza), but the opening of the Landau Ropeway link between GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen has been delayed. The official reason there is snowfall. It is a generally cloudy start to this morning and as of 8am it is just under 0C in town. Some forecasts predict a chance of some sunshine and clearer skies in the middle of the day today. After that exciting snowfall in December, we are now looking forward to the next cold front and heavy snow to top things up with a nice new thick layer and mid-winter conditions. There's no shortage of snow around, of course, but regular fresh layers are always welcome. It looks like the next potentially significant snowfall might be around Tuesday/Wednesday next week. Before that, we might get some light snow at times across today and tomorrow with clearer skies more likely on Sunday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 3rd January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. A lot of cloud around yesterday, though some periods in the middle of the day when the clouds cleared (to varying degrees) giving us some dramatic scenery to be enjoye in places, depending on where you were! It is snowing lightly this morning and that is what local forecasts are telling us to expect for the day. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 5th January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 384cm Posted on Sunday 5th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Light snow continued for much of the day yesterday, though again not really amounting to much. It didn't really stick on roads, etc, but we cleared off some dustings a few times with a total of just under 2cm since the morning. Of course, there may well have been more at higher elevations. The light snow eased off during the night. Today starts quite cold, with a mix of cloud and some clearer skies. As of 7am there is a thick bank of cloud above the Minamiuonuma valley, less so above Yuzawa. We are expecting a mostly fine and sunny morning, perhaps clouding over again in the afternoon. Should be some nice snow conditions to enjoy too. ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 5th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 8th January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 23cm Snowfall at base this seas 407cm Posted on Wednesday 8th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Very happy to report a fresh layer of snow this morning. Our measurement as of 8am is 23cm... and counting. Moderate snowfall right now. Very good. Kagura is this morning reporting 'maybe' 30-40cm of fresh snowfall. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 25cm. Yesterday ended up being a largely fine day (in terms of sun/cloud and brightness), and it was another mild one getting up to around 6C. And we did get some more rain before the snow started overnight. This morning is clearly colder. It is currently just -0.5C in town. We are expecting snow through the day today. There might be a chance of a clearer start to tomorrow, but some potentially heavy snow is shown on forecasts for Thursday/Friday. Big picture: the last few days of warmth and some rain inevitably hurt snow conditions, but we seem to be back on track this morning. There's a nice new fresh layer out there this morning, with more on the way soon. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this seas 410cm Posted on Thursday 9th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just a 'big dusting' really since the report yesterday morning, which is perhaps surprising. It remained fairly cold during the day, certainly more than the previous two days, but we just didn't get much snow out of it. Today it is one of those early mornings where it's not clear what we will get. There is cloud around, but some clearer skies too. Some forecasts say we might get a fine and sunny morning, with others going for a more cloudy morning. One of those, perhaps! Unfortunately, we have to post an early report this morning, and so can't wait to see what develops. (Early report means some of the snow depth data in the list has not been updated). What seems more certain is snow from tonight and through the day tomorrow. We might get some heavy snow, but the really heavy snow may track to the north of us. Obviously, hopefully we will get lots! ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 9th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 10th January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this seas 432cm Posted on Friday 10th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we had a rather nice morning, actually. The skies parted over Yuzawa for a while before gathering around again later on. This morning it is snowing again. It seems to have start sometime around 2am (as I was woken up by the sound of our pump starting up to send water up to the roof on the house to melt the falling snow). As of 8:45am, we measure 22cm of fresh snowfall at our Yuzawa point and 24cm just to the north at our measuring point the Ishiuchi region of Minamiuonuma. Maiko Snow Resort reports 20-30cm. Yuzawa Kogen reports 15cm. The snow is still coming down and generally limited visibility. Feels quite cold too and it is now slightly above -3C in town. Due to the weather conditions only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura is open. Tashiro and the central Kagura section are not going to be opening today. The Dragondola connecting Tashiro with Naeba is also closed, of course. Other than that, all other ski areas in the region appear to be opening as planned. Looking ahead to the upcoming long weekend (Monday is a national holiday), I'm looking at four different forecasts that are predicting different things. The current snow might continue into tomorrow morning, but generally it should be fairly calm with the chance of some sunshine at times. Whatever the weather, but especially if it is fine and sunny, expect ski areas to be busy this weekend. It is traditionally one of the busiest weekends of the ski season. ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 10th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 11th January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this seas 482cm Posted on Saturday 11th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 10:15am update: Increasing blue skies and sunshine over Yuzawa now. All data on this report remains as per original report. Original early morning report: Good morning from Yuzawa. We had a short spell of blue sky and sun yesterday morning, but for the most part it was cloudy with snow falling yesterday. Last night at 7pm there was 25cm of fresh snow piled up at our Yuzawa measuring point. After clearing that snow off, this morning there is another 25cm. So that makes a nice round total of 50cm since the report yesterday. Excellent! Such a large amount feels like something of a surprise... or perhaps I just wasn't paying enough attention! It looks like our region, along the neighbouring mountains in northern Gunma Prefecture, received the most snowfall in Japan over the last 24 hours. As it should be, of course. ;) Kagura is reporting 30-40cm 'since yesterday' and Maiko Snow Resort is also reporting 30-40cm of fresh snowfall this morning. It is still snowing (on and off) early this morning and we are expecting light or maybe moderate snow to continue a little longer. Depending on which forecast you look at, we can expect the snow to ease off sometime by afternoon or this evening. (Might be just a temporary glimpse, but I can spot a bit of blue sky on the Yuzawa Kogen webcam image below. It somehow feels like one of those days when it might clear up quicker than expected.) Clearer skies and sun are generally forecast from early morning tomorrow. With all the lovely fresh snow around, weekend visitors should be extremely pleased with the conditions they can get to enjoy. Today is the first day of the long weekend. (Monday is 'Coming of Age Day' and a national holiday). There will be some fireworks at Yuzawa Park ski area tonight and Kandatsu Snow Resort tomorrow night. No word yet on when the Landau Ropeway (connecting GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen) might open. ----------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 11th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 12th January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 484cm Posted on Sunday 12th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The early morning snowfall yesterday eased up fairly soon after the report, with about 2cm to add to this report from that. During the day we got some blue sky and sun, particularly mid- to late morning. The afternoon remained bright and sunny at times, and before evening arrived it was largely cloudy once again. It was a relatively mild day with temperatures rising a few above zero in town. We were told to expect some sunny skies today but forecasts seem to have adjusted and we have cloud cover early on. Weather conditions have been quite changeable in recent days, so who knows what we will end up during the day. ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 12th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 14th January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this seas 489cm Posted on Tuesday 14th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We has another mixed bunch of weather conditions going on yesterday, depending on where you were. It ranged from light snow, moderate snow, and some clearings in the clouds with a bit of sun too. Temps on the mild side of things again, getting up to around +3C in town early afternoon. 5cm of snowfall has been recorded at our measuring point since the report yesterday morning. And it looks like we might have another day of mild but varied weather conditions, though it should be mostly either cloudy or fine. Forecasts disagree on how much sun to expect. As of 7:15am, there's less cloud and more blue sky on view than there was just 30 minutes ago. It feels like we might get another beautiful morning. Colder conditions and good snowfall is still lined up on forecasts for tomorrow, particularly later in the day. ----------------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 14th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 15th January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 490cm Posted on Wednesday 15th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We got some lovely blue skies and sunshine again yesterday morning, with cloud starting to take over the skies in the afternoon and then some snow falling at higher elevations. It was another day of mild daytime temperatures, up to around +5C in town at lunchtime. A few comments on the snowfall/mild/weather conditions in an upcoming report. We got a bit wetter down in town late night but this morning it is snowing. Not much more than a dusting really up until now but hopefully we will be getting snowed on throughout the day. This morning both Maiko Snow Resort and Kagura report 10cm of snowfall on their upper slopes. Head high for the fresh! Looks like there might be a chance of some more sun tomorrow, but back to snow tomorrow night and into Friday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 15th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 16th January 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 41cm Snowfall at base this seas 531cm Posted on Thursday 16th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A very pleasing amount of fresh snow has arrived since the report yesterday morning. The snow was coming down heavy at times from mid-afternoon and as a result this morning there was 41cm piled up at our Yuzawa measuring point. The first (small) icicles of the season have been spotted on our roof this morning, too. (Winter feels more complete when we get our icicles). Kagura Ski Area is reporting about 30cm fresh snowfall in the Kagura Area and 50cm in the Mitsumata Area. Interesting. Yuzawa Kogen is reporting about 40cm. Maiko Snow Resort has not said anything in time for this report, but I would expect about the same amount. I think we can expect a good layer of fresh pretty much everywhere this morning. It is still snowing lightly at 8am, but expected to gradually ease off and clear up during the day today. We may even get some sunshine later in the day, possibly even before noon, according to some forecasts. Some snow is forecast again for tomorrow and then we should be back to clearer skies by Saturday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 16th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report.
