  • Myoko Now: Saturday 8th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 44cm Snowfall at base this season 1134cm Posted on Saturday 8th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Lots of snow this morning; your correspondent had some work to do last night, so couldn’t start the plowing fun from 5am as usual... so I wasn’t done until a bit ago. But late might be good as once again conditions are changing. The wind is getting stronger, and also coming from all over, first blowing from the east, then the west, then going calm again. The snow has resumed, though, although we’re also getting blasts of graupel—soft hail pellets—that bounce off everything. When we get graupel, we might get lightning and thunder, which often means heavy snow. It's going to keep on coming, in short. I have to thank our man on the ground in the Lotte Arai area, JH-san, for alerting me after the fact that the upper lifts weren’t running yesterday, after I just reported the numbers and kept on going. In fact, Sugunohara’s top No. 3 lift was also closed yesterday. He also let me know that the top Zendana lift at Lotte is not running, and that the gondola will at least be delayed, which is what the website is now saying. This is really dense snow, but as heavy as it is, if you step on it you go way down, so conditions are not very safe wherever you go into fresh snow. Some people who went into the backcountry also reported that it was slow coming down the mountain, too. Lots of powder, but sloooow downward motion. As I write a blast of wind has made everything white outside, so things will remain uncertain for some lifts (and cold if you’re out there!) The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's a bit crazy up here at the moment with snow, wind and limited visibility... not to mention the cold. Early morning Yakebitaiyama was reporting 40cm... there'll be more than that by now. Okushiga Kogen is reporting 60cm. The wind is blowing it all about and so one of those mornings when it is difficult to pin down a number. Webcams are either busy or you can't see anything on them. People lined up on the road in Hasuike at the moment. But quite a few lifts are delayed or won't be moving in this weather. The weather will perhaps have eased off somewhat by tomorrow but we are still expecting snow perhaps until Monday. • Nozawa Now: Saturday 8th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 44cm Snowfall at base this season 671cm Posted on Saturday 8th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from a very snowy Nozawa. Yesterday the ski area was reporting 32cm of snowfall by 3pm on the top Yamabiko area. This morning it is reporting another 65cm. If you add those up, it comes to 97cm (!). And the snow depth number has gone up by... 5cm. A curious set of numbers. The Japan Meteorological Agency has recorded 37cm at Karasawa. My own observation is nearly 45cm. What is for sure is we have had a lot of snow since yesterday and it is still coming down. And not set to stop any time soon. Very limited visibility at the start of the day and the ski area is warning that the Nagasaka gondola and top lifts may have some downtime. But they seem to be open at the start of the day. For those venturing out in these conditions: know where you are going, be with a friend and remember there's tons of fresh everywhere so no need to venture into dangerous areas. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After the fun of yesterday (the usual excitements of snow country; I wasn’t alone in having the gas leak or get shut off), I thought it might be nice to sleep in at least a little bit. A quick check around 4am showed that there wasn’t much snow falling.... and it is absolutely dumping at the moment. I’m giving you a mid-way snow depth figure, because it’s coming down in many centimeters per hour at this point. I see that the resorts, to, aren’t adding much to the snowpack numbers yet. Time to fire up those snow throwers and make life liveable! No rest for the plowman.... But it should be excellent for skiers! If you’re going off-piste, though, really be careful and go in a group (with avalanche gear). The chances of sluffing—loose snow avalanches—is seriously high. Update: seems not much of Lotte is open (due to wild conditions) and also hearing that the (train) station is closed. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 637cm Weather overview Cloud, snow Wind Varied Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Friday 7th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. Up to around 10cm of snow since yesterday (ski area reporting 5cm) and snow falling with limited visibility at the start of today. A few more days of this particular cold/snowy front to go (though some forecasts do seem to show the chance of some sun over the weekend at times). Someone asked why the Myoko Now snowfall numbers are sometimes (often?) larger than here. The very simplest way I can explain that is that the Myoko reporter (who I trust 100%) measures what he/she measures and I measure what I measure. If the numbers are different, and there is more snow falling nearby in Myoko, it is because... there is more snow falling in Myoko. We're just reporting what we see. It is not a competition! By the way, if you are particularly interested in how the snow is falling, there's a snowfall measuring stick on the official Madarao website.
