I have every so often, either that or living up in the mountains, of course i have a family now and couldnt support them like that. Sure would be a peaceful life though. Ocean11 0
I don't have a faith, but I'm looking to buy a plot of land in the country and get as close to self-sufficiency as I can. Doing with less is not something my family are very keen about, but they'll come round eventually. Obviously it will take some time, and will probably never be complete. A peaceful life is worth working towards. What makes you think you can't...? For anybody who's interested, I've put together some links that I've found useful here; http://www.wheelboarders.com/ If you know of some other good ones, let me know. slow 0
Ocean, this is the project in Karuizawa. My friend is helping them build earth-friendly house there. http://midorinoie.hp.infoseek.co.jp/kitakaru/kita_date.html She really needed to research about biogas digester in Cuba but didn't have time to visit Las Terrazas... I learned about the self sufficient agriculture in Thailand. What the King saying and what the government doing. It was interesting.
montoya 0
Ocean, if you haven't already heard of it, the Chiiori project in Shikoku's East Iya might be of interest: article website

kintaro 0
The guy that article speaks of "Alex Kerr" is the author of DOGS AND DEAMONS and at least one more book on japan. Quite interesting.
Ocean11 0
I'm not really sure what the point of Chiiori is. After reading Dogs and Demons this spring, I checked out the website and thought about going there. But it's a long way to go, and I don't know why I would bother really. I got a slight impression of utopianism - the place seems to be a getaway for people who want a taste of old rural Japan but who won't be living that way in the near future. Having to be driven in a 4x4 to the local onsen for a bath isn't really a practical proposition in the long term.
