I was just reading the other thread in snow talk about the city to the south of hakuba. If I remember it was real small, hard to believe it was a city. Unless I'm remembering the wrong place of course.

Is there a definition of a city for Japan, like a certain population number or something?

BOS, I learnt that the definition for a city is to have more than 30,000 population.

But some cities like Iiyama (Nagano pref.) has much less than that nowadays.

Probably I guess when they made Iiyama a city, it must have had more than that but maybe has lost people little by little.

If you meant Oomachi city, I have to agree that is also small, not that big. Just around 30,000 inhabitants. Just some shops around the train station. And very big in square meters. So the population density there is really small, I guess. Lake Aoki area is still Oomachi city.
