BagOfCrisps 24
I was just reading the other thread in snow talk about the city to the south of hakuba. If I remember it was real small, hard to believe it was a city. Unless I'm remembering the wrong place of course. Is there a definition of a city for Japan, like a certain population number or something?
gamera 0
BOS, I learnt that the definition for a city is to have more than 30,000 population. But some cities like Iiyama (Nagano pref.) has much less than that nowadays. Probably I guess when they made Iiyama a city, it must have had more than that but maybe has lost people little by little. If you meant Oomachi city, I have to agree that is also small, not that big. Just around 30,000 inhabitants. Just some shops around the train station. And very big in square meters. So the population density there is really small, I guess. Lake Aoki area is still Oomachi city.

muikabochi 208
We have just become part of a city. A strange city made up of a number of towns. So there's no real center at all. Sure don't feel like a city to me.

scouser 4
Cities are usually quite big, although there are smaller ones. I think they all have cathedrals too. (?) Other than that, I really don't know.
me jane 0
Yep, the official way to classify a city in the UK used to be whether or not it had a catherdral. Swansea doesn't have a cathedral though and its a city.
veronica 2
30000 that sure is a small number. My small town back home has 3 times that.
