veronica 2
Quiztime. Someone asked me this. Is there somewhere in Japan that has snow all year round? If not, where is the last snow to melt? Ideas?
soubriquet 0
Technically, permanent snow is labelled an ice sheet or glacier, and I don't think Japan has any of those. I'm sure there are pockets of snow tucked away high in north facing gullies though.
eskimobasecamp 0
don't think there are any glacier areas, but some areas hold snow well into the summer, dependent on how much snow fell in the winter, and weather etc. after the big winter last season, there was still snow at daiseki in the hakuba peaks all summer. but you couldn't really guarantee that as an annual event, even less ski on it all year round. but yeh like soub said, pockets of snow up high, yeh. tsondaboy 0
Soub, isnt Gassan a glacier?
soubriquet 0
Nope. This is Gassan in August, taken from near the top. The top of the chairlift is visible on the ridge, and they have three rope tows in the bowl. It gets heaps of snow, but apart from a few patches, all gone by late summer. BagOfCrisps 24
Nice photo soubs. Are there any trees at that resort at all? Looks unlike any other place I've seen a pic of.
soubriquet 0
It does look much like a glacier, I agree. There are some trees at the bottom. The drive in is quite impressive.
