In Niigata in the last month there has been a fairly big increase in the number of road accidents and deaths compared to a normal January - that sees much more snow.

 

The opposite of what I would have thought, but it seems that people are just being less careful than they would normally be.

halfmachine might be on to something. If the roads are getting black ice on them, then they can still look fine (ie no snow on them so they look safe). But it's much easier to slip on that stuff than on a fully snowed-over road.

In Omachi cop shop, there's a map and chart showing fatal accidents on the roads through Hakuba with their dates. Surprisingly few were in winter.

 

I see a car or truck in a field every winter though. If it happens to you, get towed out pronto or the owner will screw you over for polluting his field. Its big money.
