Friends who've been up there recently say that Fuji san has a hell of a lot of snow on it this year, right down to the base of the mountain.

I seem to remember that last year the situation was reversed - loads of snow in the Alps but little on Fuji. Wonder if this is El Nino taking effect?

Hopefully there's no direct relationship with the amount we can expect to fall on the ski-jos over the next few days...

True - perhaps it has been melting lower down...

Well, more than one person told me this over the past month, so I still trust their observations at the time they made them.

As for my harebrained weather theory though - err...all I can say is that since I'm not going to be skiing Fuji-san, I don't actually care how much snow's on it

Fuji gets snow when weather systems comes in from the south. we have had a lot of rain in shizuoka this december, that translates to snow up higher on Fuji.

When the nice weather systems comes in from the north, Shizuoka gets sun and strong wind. that explains last years lack of snow last year.

By the way, it looks like a nice system will hit us on friday.
