Enough snow = open early?

Without wanting to tempt fate but - --- if there is enough snow, do resorts in Japan tend to open early or what?

 

Like if the plan is for a Dec 12th opening, and they have enough snow to open on Dec 5th - do they?

I think it will depend on a lot of things, not least whether a resort is ready to open (staffing, etc etc). If only 2 people are going to turn up even if they do open, it probably won't be worth it either.

Some of them do open, although not all the lifts are running. It's usually about 1,000 yen cheaper.

 

Keep an eye on the resort watch page, and those that say 'partially open' are.

 

Some of these mountains can be getting crazy pow at the top and nothing much at the bottom, so it can be a great day out.

I've seen resorts have 50+cm and not opened until their official date. When I asked them why they said "staff, planning, blah blah....". So there you go.

Took resort management at school and like any other business if it does not make money they will not open. Now there is sometimes an advantage in marketing to open early so some places will do it. That said most resort gear for a date or a little bit before and the staff is like they say not in place or not even there.
