So I think I have freakin' whiplash.

When I spin, I really have to throw my head in one direction, and I think it is causing some problems.

But when I spin and fall, the reversal of momentum (my neck turning one way, and my body bouncing the other way) causes even more problems.

Is this common ? Anyone ever had this before ? Does anyone have any advice ?

My symptoms are a crushing headache that breaks right on through the painkillers, and a sore neck that is difficult to turn.

Do I need to see a doctor ?

u couldve strained your muscles (whiplash is any soft tissue damage).

i would never say dont see a doctor (depends on location, type, severity, aggravating factors, etc etc. of pain) , but

deep inside i know u know what the treatment should be!

if its causing real problems or not improving seek help.

I had that same whiplash feeling a few weeks ago when I caught my front edge in some deep, wet snow and got pinwheeled around onto my back. I was able to board for 2 more days, but just resting for a few days seemed to do the trick.

Getting a snowbunny to apply warm paws to the trouble area can't hurt either...

  • 2 weeks later...

i am just getting over a whiplash injury from a car crash - its been much worse than anything i've ever done to my neck snowboarding, but the rehab principles would be the same i reckon.

do lots of warming up stuff - look up as far as you can go, hold for a sec, look down with your chin against your chest, repeat 10 times each direction, then do the same thing side to side. heat is good too - get a microwave heat-pack or a hot-water bottle & rest with it against your neck. also swimming is really good for streching & building strength in the neck.

& you need to see an osteopath - osteopathy works really well. i wasted 3 months seeing physios after my accident, then an osteopath had me 90% better in 2 weeks! its all about getting your muscles back to where they should be & getting the knots out. dont see a chiropractor though - you need to get a thorough massage before you get maniplations - which is what an osteopth does.

i think my spine is pretty much shot. When I feel it, it's all crooked and some vertebrae are swollen.

When I ask friends to feel it and guess which vertebrae are problematic, they guess the ones that hurt the most without fail.

oddly enough now, when I have a hard impact, my whiplash goes away, but then the next hard impact brings it back, and forth and back, etc.

I think it is probably not healthy for me to be snowboarding now, but it is too much fun to quit. had another great day today, and the promise of another few tomorrow and saturday beckon.

thanks for the advice on the osteopath though. I am not going to treat my injury until I can either find someone here I can trust, or until I go back home.

Be careful dude, if your vertebrae in the neck are really that bad you should get someone who speaks nihin-go to go will you to a specialist. You could be doing permanent damage! The headaches are not a good sign (if you are still having them). Think long term mate

i have a friend who just got back from nozawa & he found a great massage therapist there - i'll see if i can get his details for you. i'd imagine that any osteopath with a few degrees on the wall of their clinic would be worth a shot - you'll know they are good if they give you a really thorough massage (using elbows to get the knots out) that actually hurts a bit, then they do the adjustments afterwards.

& like dims said, headaches means something is pretty badly out of whack - i had headaches for 3 months after my car crash - they only went away after i'd seen the osteo 3-4 times.
