I made it over to Asahidake for the first time on Sunday. I've submitted a full review but here's a shorter version with some photos:-

The good things:-

1. Lots of snow! There hadn’t been a big dump by their standards but off-piste there was about a foot of powder which increased as you went down into the trees. A couple of times after wiping out, I had to hike out through thigh-deep snow!

2. Nice tree runs.

3. It’s cheap! A 4 hour ticket cost 2,800Yen.

& the bad things:-

1. There didn’t seem to be a lot of terrain (not that I would know – see below). The steeper top sections are over relatively quickly and then it flattens out so you have to rejoin a groomed course to make it through the lower sections back to the ropeway. That was certainly my experience on a board (albeit a non-powder board) though obviously the flatter sections present less problems for skiers or boarders with ski poles!

2. The ropeway only runs every twenty minutes and is quite slow, so unless you up your pace, you’re probably only going to get 2 runs an hour.

Although my visit coincided with plenty of decent snow, I couldn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked due to poor visibility. At the top you could hardly see where you going, as per the 2nd photo below. It got better once you hit the trees but by then you’d either lost your friends, your way or your confidence! On a bluebird day or even a day that you could see more than a few metres ahead of you, Asahidake would be awesome. Otherwise you need local knowledge or to ride with someone who has that knowledge. Overall though, a fun place and one which I'll definitely go back to.

honestly, the two negatives are so freaking huge that theyre going to have to pay me to go there. In fact, theyll have to pay my transport, my hotel, my food, and also some compensation money for going there instead of somewhere i might actually enjoy :)

The snow looks deelish though.

Yeah, the negatives are fairly big but on a clear day, I reckon it would be a blast and more so on your Charlie!! Hopefully I'll get the chance this season - unfinished business and all that! :happyshades:
