panhead_pete 27
I was talking with a new Japanese acquaintance the other night and she got pissed off when I asked if her night job was working in a bar. I guess there are bar jobs that are different to the western ones?
Nisoko 6
Perhaps it came across as you asking her if she was effectively a prostitute?
RobBright 35
Was this girl working in hooters?
panhead_pete 27
No idea altho I doubt it was hooters... I imagine she thought I meant a hooker but that was NOT what I meant, was just thinking bar maid. Lots of hookers in bars?
Chriselle 158
In my Roppongi experience.."Hostess"....as a title....has a lot of range.
Jynxx 4
Pete, Ther general term for those who are engaged in alcohol serving business (excluding "grog shop") are called Mizu-sho-bai (water trade) in Japan. There is still a very traditional class mentality as to profession in Japan. You can consider it a business having to deal with Yakuza influence. Also, those who are in the general food catering business and hospitality (service industry to big business and government) are considered lower in class. It´s all about this social respect stuff. Jynxx 4
Sounds like you were with someone very straight. Next time, say coffee shop or restaurant. You sure do get around Pete.

Personally, some of the ladies I know, don't seem to be ashamed about working in bars. Perhaps she was pissed off because you assumed her night job was working in a bar? Or perhaps she was pissed off because you assumed that she had a night job thus assuming that she worked in a bar?
panhead_pete 27
Hehe she mentioned she had a night job so I presumed it was a bar..... my mistake, oh well plenty more sashimi in the sea.
Chriselle 158
Pete, I think you threw in the towel too soon. I would've worked it a little more. Interestingly enough,, my wife used to be a high roller hostess.

Jynxx 4
Ah ! There are a handful of super high class Ginza hostesses who can speak like 3 languages. It would have costed you at least 100,000 Yen in late ´70s just for a bottle of booze. Donno how much they charge now...

yamabushi 3
I read an article a while back about how the geishas were pretty much pricing themselves out of business. With the way the economy is going, not that many folks can afford their services.
NoFakie 45
A couple of my exs did hostessing, but not "high roller" where its head to toe Chanel and "new clothes day" every month. One also worked in a casino. They were both funny ladies but there's wasn't much interesting goss about the job. More of a grind really.
Tubby Beaver 209
Hostess bars are a crock of shit......paying all that money just so they could pour you watered down drinks, laugh at your shit jokes and innocently rub up against you. although the Fillipino transexual one WAS a laugh!!
