oblivion 5
Thinking of a trip down to NZ in the season over there. Any tips on the best place to go?
mogski 0
Depends on the type of snow year. If it is going off in the deep South, go to Queenstown. (Int'l flights available from Aust.) If it is going off furhter up the South base yourself in Christchurch hit the major places and also some of the club fields. If the North Isalnd is getting it then you wanna go to Ruapehu(spell?!). Good luck on reading the type of snow year it will be! NZ is pretty sporadic when it comes to snowfalls and bumper years.
green 0
Whats the tendency?
mogski 0
Tendency of the NZ snow season? The snow comes is the tendency. Where, when, how much and how often are anyone's guess!!! Thanks global warming for the predictable NZ winter.
Davo 1
Mogski is on the button-the key to planning a trip is flexibility. If you went to the South Is last year you probably would've been disappointed, however in the North they had some great snow with meter dumps over a few days etc. They were still open at the beginning of the summer holidays. My pick would be backcountry at Canterbury club fields for a unique NZ snow experience.
nzlegend 1
do some research on Temple Basin. http://www.templebasin.co.nz/index.cfm/ Unique place, you have to walk 1 hour up a track to access it, there a two big lodges - Uni of Canterbury one and the bigger Temple Club one, people usually stay there for 3-4-5-6 days in the lodges, awesome friendly laid back atmosphere. awesome terrain and hardly a soul to track out the powder when it comes. A writer of Transworld Snowboarding Mag said if he had to spend the rest of his life in one place, it would be there. http://www.nzadventure.com/temple_basin_snowboarding.html this site really plugs for the place especially the review of the extreme skiier. check out some photos http://www.nzadventure.com/temple_basin_photos.html no chairs or T bars only three rope tows that require nutcrackers using them it is best to attach one to an abseilling harness, belts are painful to use check out this link http://www.natives.co.uk/news/2002/0802/05tow.htm about nutcrackers or this link about skiing http://www.gatewaytonz.co.nz/AboutNZskiing.htm Snow can be inconsistent at Temple so go only if the snow is there, check carefully the reports. But I highly rate the place especially witha bunch of mates, it would be the ultimate place to have have a ski reunion or party or just hang out, drinking and partying at night
Ocean11 0
Now I know. I thought a nutcracker was a device, like a T-bar only worse, that cracked your nuts. I'm relieved.
zwelgen 0
SO you have to walk up a track for 1 hr with all your gear for 3/4/5 days? Man I have to take 2 trips to put my stuff for a day trip in the car. But I guess it means only the hardcore punters are there and perhaps thats worth the hike. Mind you walking out for 1 hr after 3/4/5 days of riding must be tough
nzlegend 1
ops forgot to add there is a goods lift from the bottom that ferries all your gear up the mountain! bugger carrying it! when I was there the goods lift was broken so they got helicopter to carry it up! sweet
mogski 0
Yeah I am with kamoshika on this one Temple Basin rips! In fact there are alot of places like this in NZ and they all are way better than the commercial areas cause you can pretend to be a ski bum while actually knowing that you hold down a decent job. Club fields are the way to go.
