Thundercat 60
Went to a local festival today for the first time in a few years and decided to snap a few pictures. As far as festivals in Japan go I think this one has a couple of interesting events. Tonight was the temochi hanabi (手æŒã¡èŠ±ç«) which are hand-held fireworks and for those who haven't already seen an event like this live I would highly recommend it. Each person who participates is called a hanabishi (花ç«å¸«) and they are responsible for making their own fireworks. Basically the fireworks are made of black powder stuffed inside a length of bamboo that is reinforced with hemp rope wound around it. When lit, if the fireworks are made correctly they will shot a giant fountain of sparks into the air emitting a loud hissing nice followed by a loud explosion... It's awesome to watch! Here are some pictures of the festival. Pizza truck where have you been all my life? View Inside the grounds of Mishima Taisha (camera on the wrong setting!) Best fortune possible! Start of the fireworks Exploding out the bottom!

Thundercat 60
Here are some pictures of the horseback archery. In Japanese it's called æµé‘馬 (Yabusame) Crazy stuff... one dude fell off his horse at full gallop right in front of me. Very scary stuff but he was back on his feet like a true 射手 (ite). Having a bit of trouble! Taking aim. Just on target. Fastest horse in the competition. This guy was just flying! Poor guy falling off a terrified looking horse! Targets get smaller as the competition gets into the final round. Near miss! Another just off target! No hei bushi dance.
