Go Native 70
For those interested in such things here's the latest tourism stats from the Kutchan town office. http://www.town.kutchan.hokkaido.jp/mpsdata/web/4723/irikomi-en.pdf
thursday 1
That says for every 2.3 Aussies, there's one Hongkies. I don't see that at all. Too many **** Hogkies in Niseko.
Go Native 70
If you come in Xmas/NY or CNY then there's a real difference in the ratio with a lot more Hongkies. But if you come outside of these holiday periods for much of Jan and Feb the Aussie ratio is definitely higher.
thursday 1
I do and I have seen no evidence of that many Hongkies. 'cept one year there was this English couple we got talking to: me: "where you from?", (expecting England) couple: "Hong Kong" me: "you don't look it"
thursday 1
so there you go. The whites taking the self catering accomodation are saying they have travelled from Hong Kong.
Go Native 70
Well most of the stats come from the accommodation providers and they classify a Hongky as anyone who lives there. Obviously a large portion of these so called hongkies are expats from Europe and often Aus.
thursday 1
Not Hongkies at all then.
Go Native 70
From a marketing perspective nationality isn't really a concern it's where the people are coming from that matters, where the tourism markets exist.
Tubby Beaver 209
well when I was there there were plenty Chinese, dunno if they were from HK or the mainland though. They were the asian contingent, mostly it was ozzies....rarely did I see or hear any locals
Go Native 70
Plenty of us locals here!
thursday 1
erm... from the marketing point of view, there is plenty concern about the nationality. Those mainlanders suck massively. It degenerates tha place and others go elsewhere.
thursday 1
No offense to you mainlanders of course. You lot are great spenders.
thursday 1
Just stay away from my stashes, OK?
RobBright 35
When I was there, there were lots of aussies.
stemik 14
thanks for that GN, very interesting.
NoFakie 45
Japanese staying guests down 10% in one year. That'll be the Japanese economy to blame. 1/4 of all stays from non-Japanese starting from one percent seven years ago. Very impressive!
Tex 3
These don't seem right then... or maybe it does when considering it includes the Japanese travellers also. I hate charts, worst way to die, death by power point charts.
mina2 6
Interesting GN cheers for sharing.
NoFakie 45
The report says 167,000 nights' accom for foreign tourists. Let's say 200,000 for ones under the radar. With a mainly 100 day season and discounting for peaks at NY and CNY, does that mean there are typically 500 to 1000 non-Japanese staying in Niseko every night in winter? Go Native 70
Averaged out sounds about right. Would be much more during the peak periods like Xmas/NY and CNY though.
NoFakie 45
Thanks mate. Just wondering as to the customer base supporting the various businesses up there. I guess some of the new big developments will also bring in more customers of their own.
fat lump 0
Amazing how it has changed. I went up there about 9 years ago. Seems I might not recognise the place now - though I might remember that lovely snow we had up there. Best I have ever experienced.
