Roger's head 0
I was wondering, are there any decent sized resorts that are near to Zao Onsen resort in Yamagata? From what I can tell there aren't just wondering if there might be something I'm missing. Thanks
muikabochi 208
I don't think there's much nearby. Zao Liza World up the road and some on the other side of the mountain in Miyagi, but I don't think you can get to them in winter without going alllll the way round. It's also by far the biggest in the prefecture I believe.
2pints-mate 0
No expert but we didn't see any either when we were researching or actually there.
Zaoman 0
Basically as above. There's no concentration of resorts like you find in places in Nagano and Niigata. Zao just stands out on it's own.
ILoveZao 8
Just a few small hills nearby (Liza World). There are more resort in Yamagata but not closeby and smaller - Zao is the biggest. There are some resort in same mountain range but in Miyagi and while close in terms of distance, they are not close in terms of access from each other.
sanjo 2
Was just looking at t'map and there are a few resorts round the back of Zao in Miyagi but can't get to them from the Zao side. I'm going to go for a few trips up Zao way this summer I think. Looks and sounds a real interesting area.
siamesetwin 0
This is something I have noticed also. We want to go to Zao but there isn't much nearby in terms of other resorts. Perhaps we will go there for 6 days or so and then travel to another part maybe Fukushima or Niigata.
flip360 0
We love the look of Zao but the fact that it is a bit out on it's own has put us off somewhat. We tried Nagano this past season but looking to Hokkaido for next.
Roger's head 0
Thanks folks. Thought as much. Zao still seems worth the visit on it's own, and for a few days or more too.
