RobBright 35
hey quick question if I were to miss a shinkansen (with reserved seats) on the way back from a trip - what's the deal? can I just jump on the next shinkansen but in the unreserved section? if so, do I have to pay extra? tsondaboy 0
You can do that without having to pay extra.
boardbaka 3
hi Rob - I kindly asked my wife for her take on this one as I kinda thought it was an interesting question and would like to know myself -anyway she said what she usually does when she misses the shink (implying that it has happened numerous times lol) is jump on the unreserved section of the following one `for no extra charge` adding that this is `not illegal` - there you goin a nutshell I guess -sounds like you are adhering to the motto of the boyscouts `be prepared`- no harm in that -gd luck
boardbaka 3
tsonda sniped me with what seems like the correct answer -!
muikabochi 208
You most certainly can. Don't know if you can tranfer the reserved seat bit, but as for getting on an unreserved area - no problems at all.
tsondaboy 0
You can transfer the reserved seat only if you do it before the train it was reserved on departs. After departure you can still reserve a new seat, but you will have to pay the difference between the reserved and unreserved seat tickets. You are not able to do it, not even get on a unreserved seat, if you have a 1 day deal with lift tickets for a resort. Nevertheless, I have done it and no one bothered me. muikabochi 208
Yeah good point tsondaboy, didn't think about that (as I have never used one of those). Also remember that some tickets may have limitations in terms of days you can use them.
tsondaboy 0
usually you have a 2 day window you can use the unreserved seat tickets. In some cases it can be longer than that, but I am not sure when.
muikabochi 208
Yes I have noticed that 2 day thing on the ticket I usually get when I go to Tokyo. Good points tsondaboy.
RobBright 35
darn so If I do the weekday one day return I am confined to those trains?
echineko 1
Surely if it is one-day return then you must return that day!
RobBright 35
thats not the echineko... the point is getting a later shinkansen on the same day
tsondaboy 0
or an earlier...
skidaisuki 0
If you have day trip discount shinkansen tickets, the JR people may try and insist that you take the seats you've reserved. I found this out when trying to catch an earlier-than-reserved train back to Tokyo from Echigo Yuzawa. I ignored them and got on a nearly-empty carriage of free seats anyway. No consequences - but it may be worth knowing.
BillTheBinMan 0
The few times I have been on a shinkansen it has been with an unreserved ticket, but it had "valid 2 days" written on it. I got a seat each time.
RobBright 35
Just so turns out that the shinkansen we got today was the last one from gala yuzawa anyway! Good job we DIDN'T miss it!
OkemoLoon 0
I got stuck in Yuzawa on night it ended up costing us like 12000yen to stay. what a waste
scouser 4
If you miss one from Gala Yuzawa I would imagine that there is going to be a later one from Echigo Yuzawa (the main town station)
brit-gob 9
What time is the last one from Gala? I can't see it being much later than 6pm. The last one from the main station 2km up the road is 10pm I think...
tsondaboy 0
The last one from Echigo-Yuzawa station is 22:22. And the first one from Tokyo station is 06:08.
RobBright 35
Last one from gala is at 7:04pm. And it was empty so we could stretch out our weary legs. Last one from echigo-yuzawa on weekdays is at 10:22pm. Weekends the last one from gala is a bit later at 7:57pm
