tripitaka 0
Has anyone got any info, reports, etc? I'm going over there for business and pleasure so I though it might be a fun experience to go a resort in the hermit kongdom.
quattro 1
The biggest and best place to go would probably be Yong Pyong.
skidaisuki 0
tripitaka - you are going to North Korea (the 'hermit kongdom'.... ) on business? What are you doing, flogging nuclear components or something?

thursday 1
From my experience, not really worth it. For some reason, they shut down the lifts so we can all pack into the feeding hall for lunch. I've been to Yong Pyong, Pheonix Park and Muju. Much the same formula, resort centre, hotel, condos. The very limited number of resorts means crowds during the days and massive crowds during the weekends. The snow is nothing like the Hokkaido stuff we all love. This is Yong Pyong, Quattro's fav, mine too. It's a 4 hour drive out of Seoul to the Dragon Valley. When we went there, it was packed all of the day and not too much of a highta as they spray ice during the night. This was 8am when coaches were trundling in. The building on the right is the resort's food complex. Main building in fact. You could rent a condo....... But I much prefer the convenience of the hotel That's my fat arse in the blue. tripitaka 0
I guess I'd be doing it for novelty's sake more than anything. I went to a Korean hot spring, which was a pretty disappointing experience. Very Stalinesque and definitely not foreigner friendly. I hear the national parks are quite different though so it'd be nice to head up there.
skidaisuki 0
Sorry Tripitaka, I always thought that the term referred to the 'Socialist Paradise' bit up north... I stand corrected.

I stand corrected. Well, it actually refers to a dynasty that originated in the north, but no big deal. Korean history is quite fascinating and massively influential in the development of Japan (not that the Japanese education system openly acknowledges that).
quattro 1
North of Yong Pyong is Sorak park it's real nice. There is a small resort near there called the Alps. They actually get some of the best snow in Korea. If there is such a thing
spook 0
how come korea gets much less snow than japan? is it because the cold fronts that hit japan gather moisture over the sea of japan before reaching the mountains? (excuse my ignorance... i don't know much about snowy weather systems)
quattro 1
That is most likely the reason. It gets down right cold over there but not a lot of snow. I think most of the pictures you see from the Korean War with all the snow may have been taken up north.
cheeseman 1
Do the resorts over there do cheese well, unlike here in Japan?
tripitaka 0
Well, I'm pretty cheesy, so I guess I can add something over there. You've obviously "outed" your cheese. Is this an exhibition of wackiness?
