big-will 7
This was supposed to be a thread about the top 20 rankings on sj's ranking section, but got taken over with maths talk, which remains in this thread. The actual thread with the data is now here: http://www.snowjapanforums.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/248357#Post248357
SerreChe 2
Some dodgy names in there, but then realized that they only had a few votes. Anybody pass the Jam ?
big-will 7
Well it is to be expected with something new like this... Have you voted for resorts you have been to? If not, I suggest not complaining!
tsondaboy 0
SJF, can I get a bit nerdy about your resort ranking values. The value you post is the mean value of the votes, the median value or the standard deviation? PS: I am not joking, this is a serious question.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted December 10, 2007 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2007 Er, it might be one of them! It is currently calculated by simply dividing the total score by the number of votes. Good idea big-will. It will be interesting to see how the numbers change as more votes are cast. (This was discussed on the chat box this morning but we have the ability to delete votes if we notice any suspicious voting patterns). Please do vote for resorts you have been to, everyone. You can vote from any of the resort pages on SJ, or easily from this form here: http://www.snowjapan.com/e/resorts/japan-snow-resort-vote.php
spook 0
i like this new tool, but i'm a bit confused - how come you can designate and 'overall score' and then vote for all the different categories. shouldn't the overall score be the average of all the categories?
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted December 10, 2007 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2007 We considered doing that, but eventually decided to go with a system where you can vote your "General Score" as well as the other 4 more specific categories. If you want to just give a resort 1 general score, just vote in General Score and the others will not be registered.
tsondaboy 0
So its the mean value then. The median value is similar to the mean value, but before dividing the total score with the number of votes, you remove the highest and lowest value.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted December 10, 2007 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2007 At the moment no. We can of course adjust this in the future if we feel it is a good idea. At the moment we just monitor any obviously strange voting patterns.
tsondaboy 0
So lets say a resort got the following votes: 45 56 61 100 the mean value would be = 65 and the median = 58.
NoFakie 45
Isn't the median simply the middle value? The "remove highest and lowest" is how they judge many sports to remove bias.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted December 10, 2007 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 10, 2007 We're looking into this and may well adjust the way the averages are calculated to further remove the effect of some jokers voting "100%" all the time.... thanks tsondaboy! tsondaboy 0
Originally Posted By: Mr Wiggles The "remove highest and lowest" is how they judge many sports to remove bias. Thats exactly what the Median is. The mean value would have been to sum all the votes the judges gave and divide it by the number of the judges.
Ken of Kentropolis 0
And yet it seems so much more meaner to disregard some judges votes
tsondaboy 0
And a major mistake I just noticed. By removing the highest and lowest values you calculate the "Interquartile mean" not the "Median". I am sorry this wont happen again. :self-smacking gremlin:
Tubby Beaver 209
Yeah, isn't the median just the middle score?
keba 0
The median is the score in the middle. Say the scores are 1, 23, 45, 67, 89 then the median is 45 (the mean is also 45, but just a mathematical coincidence). If you have 99 scores, the median is the 50th score. It's a way of mitigating the significance of numbers outside the bell curve.
tsondaboy 0
Exactly keba, I was a bit absent-minded yesterday.
big-will 7
Hey you guys my ranking thread is turning into a nerdy maths class! Stop it!
tsondaboy 0
keba 0
Sorry big-will, but it's the only way to be able to put the Rankings' results into perspective. We need to know what we are measuring, even with something as subjectve as this.
tsondaboy 0
keba, you strong in maths? Once the rankings start to build up its gonna be a mayhem to try to manually check and remove strange values. I suggested SJ to do the following in order to remove malicious rankings. Instead of just post the mean of the votes, calculate the standard deviation of the votes, select only the votes that are away from the mean value the amount of the standard deviation, and then calculate the mean value for these votes. big-will 7
I belive SJF did that right near the beginning of the thread, keba, before it was taken over with maths. I've moved the info to: http://www.snowjapanforums.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/248357/gonew/1#UNREAD Feel free to continue your maths talk or whatever else in this thread.
