soubriquet 0
I've had a look at the latest sea surface temperatures. This is a comparison between actual October temperatures for the past three years. 2005 2006 2007 The main difference it that the Sea of Japan and the Pacific east of Tohoku were much cooler in 6006 compared with 2005 and 2007. So that's looking good. I've done a little arithmetic on the binaries and found the differences between 2006-2005, 2007-2006 and 2007-2005. This is 2006 - 2005. It clearly shows the seas around Japan were cooler (cool colours) in 2006 compared with 2005, and the northern Pacific was warmer. 2007 - 2006. This year the seas around Japan are warmer than 2006, and the northern Pacific is cooler, so we are back to the 2005 situation. 2007 - 2005. Comparing these two years, we can see that this year is warmer than 2005, but not by much. What does it mean? The SSTs drive the weather patterns, and so far 2007 is looking like the epic 2005. So far, it's looking good.

soubriquet 0
I inhabit a parallel universe where this stuff is commonplace. The top 3 (big) images are actual sea surface temperature, and are linked directly from this website. Note that it comes from Yamagata http://www.ocean.caos.tohoku.ac.jp/~merge/sstbinary/actvalbm.cgi?eng=1 I have constructed the bottom three images by subtracting October 9 data sets from each other. I have subtracted 2005 from 2006, 2006 from 2007, and 2005 from 2007. What you get is the difference. Where the colours are hot (yellow and red) the temperatures are warmer than the preceding year. Where the colours are cool (green and blue) the temperatures are cooler than the preceding year. What the data show is that: 1) last year was highly anomalous wrt sea surface temperature; and 2) this October is similar to 2005. Don't try this at home kiddies. You won't be able to import the binaries without writing a script. I'm using ENVI software. It cost USD10,000, and that's the academic price
