big-will 7
I was just talking to Dell (thinking about buying) and they seemed to be saying that if I buy now, I will get Vista for 3000 yen - and then basically I will have BOTH on my PC. ie. I can switch between the two. Or something like that. Seems strange I would have thought upgrading to Vista meant XP was bye-bye. Any techheads any thoughts on that?
keba 0
A lot of third party developers' software may not run on Vista yet, so you'll need to hang on to XP for a while, is what I've read in the PC mags. Some guys were even saying that they would be running Linux as well, so 3 O/S's on the same PC.

keba 0
I will be waiting until PC's are pre-loaded with Vista before buying a new one for that reason. Trying to get rid of XP from under Vista would probably mean a clean install, unless you want to leave a lot of useless debris on your HDD from the old O/S.
big-will 7
Do you need to get rid of XP? Is that just for making space or for another reason?
bobby12 0
for making space.
NutteyCubey 0
You don't have to big-will, just you might want the space as bobby says.
keba 0
XP and Vista are both big, resource intensive O/S's, like everything that comes out of MS. If you use both, you'll want to make sure your HDD, processor and RAM are up to it...
Thunderbird2 0
Question - even if I have both on my machine like this, surely I would only be using one at a time. They wouldn't both be using resources at the same time... right?
keba 0
Wrong. You boot each O/S on a different partition of your HDD (or another physical drive) and run them simutaneously, so processor and RAM and shared between them.
dale#1 1
Let me butt in here... Why would you run them simultaneously? Surely you choose one and use that. Thanks.
mina2 6
I thought I would just let you all know about this version of Vista: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Limited Numbered Signature Edition Signed by the big Bill himself. Or you could go for the Chinese version: http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/21/it-begins-black-market-vista-copies-already-on-chinese-shelves/
keba 0
You might not want too, dale (and nor do I, really), but if you'd just forked out $2000 for commercial video editing software that doesn't run on Vista, but want access to some of the other goodies on Vista, you might want to run the 2 O/S's side-by-side, to save money. big-will 7
Thanks. But... if I have no need to run both at the same time for such applications, then I will only be running one at a time. Correct?
keba 0
Correct.
keba 0
Then it's just a HDD space problem, and if you get a big enough HDD, no problem.
