miteyak 0
Coming from the land where the only dangerous wildlife drive old cortinas, curiosity in the big bad 'bear' is constant. On all my mountain trips so far in Japan, I've yet to encounter our furry friends but... Is there anyone who has? What kind, the Hokk grizzly or the Honshuu blacks? Whadja do if you wake in the night to find one pawing at yer tent? If Brad Pitt can wrestle a grizzly, can I (bigger than Brad) wrestle a black (smaller than a grizzly)? rach 1
Oh no, not the bears again. Look back over some old post - there was a bear-obsessed maniac posting on here mid-season! r
miteyak 0
There's a difference to this thread... I WANT REAL ANSWERS Bears are a real threat in Hokkaido to backcountry types. Don't know about Honshuu.
el diablo 0
oh don't even get me started on the grizzlies. . . . they'll maul you relentlessly, then take your snowboard and go twice as big as you were going before your untimely demise. but for real, some good suggestions are wear bear bells (just a collar type band with jingle bells tied on) around your arm or leg or make alot of noise. don't carry unsealed food with you. and if you see a bear, back away slowly, no sudden movements. and if a bear charges, play dead. the bear will sniff you and paw at you, but it won't eat you. and grizzlies are the most dangerous type of bear. they are the only ones that will attack unprovoked. a black bear or a brown bear will not attack unless you threaten their young. miteyak 0
I was under the impression that a grizzly bear WAS a brown bear, going by the fact that their latin names are identical.
Ocean11 0
I think that's 'sniff you and paw you and tear your clothes and skin some'. Depending on how poor an actor you happen to be, it may be necessary to get up and fight the thing. Some old coot I saw on TV a few years ago who had some experience of tangling with a black bear said he owed his survival to jamming his fist into its throat, causing it to gag and disengage. Besides paws, mouth would be a fairly prominent feature on a 'curious' bear. 'a black bear or a brown bear will not attack unless you threaten their young' Is that a law of nature or something? Guest
Stoopid question here. Do them bears go to sleep all winter? And do they come out of it really skinny at the end? And do they like honey?
xxx 2
What other animals can we find on the Japanese mountains apart from the bears?
Ocean11 0
Mountain hares, Japanese serow (kamoshika), things that make natural kickers and live under them (not seen), and birds that go tweet. Not seen any serows this year, but saw them everytime last year.
