  2. Helmets rock. I prefer mine to a hat. warmer, cooler. protects from hanging tree branches and makes riding the trees a lot easier. Holds my goggles. (beware of sun-visors.) protects my goggles in my backpack. tuneup earpieces (giro) are really nice if you like music. (I love trance techno on a storm day, riding alone) foam packs out to fit, pressure points fade. Thin balaclavas make those frigid days super comfortable. many people talk about confidence going up, protecting from big falls, etc. Honestly, I think it's just plain convenient. get adjustable vents. buy o
  3. Building security officers walking around with their nightsticks drawn. I think it's protocol.
  4. daver- - i thought i staged my set up... good on ya. btw- i rode both opening days with my tuneups... not bad. but the mute button froze up a couple times. eskimo- what are those lines made out of?
  5. two sentences you should learn; Biiru, futatsu o kudasai. and toire wa doko desu ka? other than that, don't panic. perhaps tens of thousands of non-japanese come here and don't have a drop of japanese ability. but please do be patient and try your hardest when you're tired and exhausted not to get frustrated. If you make some failed attempts at their language, you will find them very friendly and willing to help you, in english. trains, again, budgeted? your fastest will be the shinkansen (bullet train). Niseko is pretty far north of tokyo/narita. you may even consider flyin

Oh, and do something with the skis so we know what you ride. scratch FS? I bought my buddy a pair of those after I blew up his G41s. I cringe at my stupidity
  7. Quote: Originally posted by Ocean11: samurai, that's a very formalistic arrangement you've selected for your quiver. But it's a tad reminiscent of a military funeral. Toque's more naturalistic arrangement is nice, although cataloging his gear is not so easy. of course it's formal, I treat my skis with loads of respect- that's why after four years, my gotamas are still rad. Actually, I'm just a dork like that. I wanted them on teh floor so you could imagine riding them. funeral? shrine maybe.
  8. What are you riding on this winter? It's much easier for us to understand your log-in name if you let us judge you by the size of your quiver. here are samurai's swords--- now you know me. There, now isn't that better??? now show me yours....
  9. yeah, gotama/fritsche but picked up some jet fuels for more versatility (186). they are waaaay beefy. can't wait to go arcing.
  10. heck, I've gone entire seasons without ever feeling "on it." but that's because I'm a hack. BTW- I'm soooo scared of my new skis. don't know if I will be able to handle them.
  11. usually day tickets are 4600. I think early season tickets are a few hundred yen cheaper.
  12. Smithers says; "We are together here to say- 'give us thou name upon which one must dyeth." do it...
  13. no pop. (yes western pop sucks more... perhaps because it's easier to understand and therefor harder to block-out) I vote Tool or Oakenfold. we had a late night at a club field in NZ blaring tool over the loud speaker. heaven it was, i'm telling ya. 11pm,Tool, beer, powder, nut-crackers... mmmmmm
  14. just an update. skied zao sat and sun and with all the flack it gets I should give some props for one of the best openers I've ever had anywhere. two days, deep snow, all mine!! most chairs were closed, but skiing what they accessed from the chairs that were available proved a very worthy incentive. Nailed about a dozen lines from the top of Utopia all the way down, alone. waist deep in the steeps, combing tracks next to my own, watching my old tracks slowly fill, wondering why I was the only one...
  15. skied zao today afterall. woke up to rain, then the clouds cleared for long enough to show me a dusting on the trees up high. so I went. It's puking!!! I skied half a meter of wet snow (no base) Only the three main ropeways and trams were running, plus one chair at the top of those. so about 30 chairs were closed. But it was butter smooth, dead, white-out, and I managed to score some good snow. will go again tomorrow if I'm not paralyzed.... it was puking puking puking when I left just before 6. can't believe the ski season just arrived!
  16. what about edge guides? what kind of guide do you use for your files/stones? oh... and what BP said; wax?
  17. maaaaayyyybbeeeeeeeeeeeeee..... if there is nothing to scrape off my driveway tomorrow, I'll wait. it's supposed to get super windy tmrow too. as much as I'm dying to go...

The towers are the most expensive part of the chair. HORRIBLE planning, full or not. I bet i could increase the skiable acres by about 30% without adding a single new tower if I were given the green light. (hindsight is 20-20)
  19. Hakkoda in northern japan (south of hokkaido) had some enormous treewells when I rode there two seasons ago. They formed from huge snows and high winds sculpting around the tree/statues. Skiing the upper trees in the wind-exposed area was like skiing bridges.
