  1. Its funny how some Japanese get upset with the Aussies at Niseko, you should go to the Gold Coast here, there is a game we play called spot the Aussie because there are so many Japanese tourists. Personally I think its wonderful we can share each others countries. I would swap our sun for your snow any time.

My family had been in Japan for nearly a month by then and the Island was one of the last stops but deffinatly a highlight. Will be back there again one day. One question though is there really monkeys at the top of the mountain, we took the lift and never saw one.
  3. Aussie Season starts in a month, hope it is a good one, could not be as bad as the last one.
  4. A number of other people on an Aussie Ski Forum asked a similar question to this so I pointed them to the info on this thread
  5. Don't be so sure re the smaller resorts, Aussies will start off at the bigger ones but then they will start to explore the smaller ones looking for their special little mountain. I for example am basing myself at Niseko this season because I have access to a great townhouse there but I will be traveling to the smaller resorts in the area. You never know I may find the next ig thing and buy a property there. Aussies don't like crowds so they will push themselves to the smaller resorts (which are still bigger than most Australian resorts.

Great sugestions so far thanks, this is my third trip to Japan and one thing I do love is getting away from all the aussies, we did a trip to Kyoto, Hirosyma etc last year and a trip up to Takayama which I loved and the highlight was staying on Miyajima Island off Hiroshima. Would love to buy a place in the snowfields so I could do summer trips as well.
  7. Yep on the list thought we might look at some of the lesser know spots and non skiing activities as well though.
  8. The torch bearers selected in Australia could purchase the torch they used, only those that ran had this option and once it ws used it could never be lit again as replacement gas canisters were not available and no other one fitted. Most people I know that ran their bit bought the torch, its a beutiful piece of work too. I hate watching most sports but the Olympics is different. Sydney during the Olympics was amazing, everyone was so happy, its a shame the world fell to pieces after this event, it would be nice to see such great and peaceful times again one day.
  9. Well I am heading back with the family from 27 Dec 2007 to 17 Jan 2008 and staying at the same place as last year about 5 km out of Higashiyama, nice and peacefull I am hiring a car this year now I know the area and am intrested in traveling to other resorts not frequented much by the hordes at Niseko as well as other attractions and places of interest. We generally ski 2 out of 3 days and do something different the other. Any sugestions like is Hell Valley worth seeing and can you get to Mt Usu (Sobetsu in winter. Are the resorts I see on my map like La Ponte worth a trip t
  10. Most likely somewhere else as well as Niseko, looking at Tomamu and Furano next time for about 5/7 days plus another 7 in Niseko, most likely will be in Jan 2009.
  11. I spent about $30,000 Australian Dollars on my Japan trip with the family (about 3,000,000 yen) and it was worth every cent. Two weeks at Niseko followed by 10 days touring from Tokyo to Miyajima Island. We will be back.
  12. Some years back at Falls Creek Australia following a dust storm the snow turned red, it was an awsome sight but we also noticed that as spring progressed the snow did not get anywhere near as soft. In NZ they have a resort on a Volcano and after a mid season eruption the snow turned black.
  13. I was in Takayama last week, nice place however on topic Anyone and everyone below you is your responsability...period. My kids and I ski a lot faster than most on a slope however we have never hit anyone because we never get close enough to anyone that we cant stop or turn in a slip second. Over time you can tell where the skier below will be going by a shift in their weight, for this reason I never take my eye off people I am passing. Clearly if you hit someone you were not allowing for the posibilities we all know are there, no different to when you drive really

  15. OK silly question but I have been invited to join someone for lunch at the Higashiyama Prince Hotel so I will ski down and join them but whats the protocol re boots jackets etc is there a room guests can drop them and do you then walk around in socks. I know really strange question but I don't want to look stupid when I arrive as its a few business associates I have never met before.
  16. Fattwins has been very helpful with info here and on other boards
  17. Isn't that what the car park at a Casino is for. A friend of mine worked security at a Casino in Perth and they have to patrol the car park looking for kids left in cars every few hours. Some people don't deserve kids however it is sad such a thing just happened to occur on that day.
  18. I have seen something along these lines many times on the net, its quite interesting actually
  19. They are not compulsory in Australia either, just highly recommended, depends how much you like your kids head I guess. Besides the obvious safety of a helmet, they also help in keeping kids warm and they are way better for holding goggles in position. I have never allowed my kids to ski without a lid, the risk is just to high, after being on , mountain the morning a child lost their life a few years ago after sliding into a tree, I really believe it should be compulsory however ask yourself why is it you make them wear a lid on a bike, skiing is far more dangerous, oh and a lot more
  20. Powderoo 170cm in Victoria would be an excellent year, thing is after a certain depth you can't tell anyway, the tree's just get shorter. I believe in Niseko thats about 2 metres so we are pretty close
  21. Kewl having my own ski site I am always curious about the history and what lead to a site being set up, great site and keep up the excellent work. Oh as for spelling, hey its a Discussion Board spelin is opsional
  22. I like it, very informative and helpfull but I am curious about something, virtually every Japanese web site I have visited has a Japanese and English version yet this site seems to be exclusively english. Where is it based ? Japan or OS and is it targeting the local or OS visitor. Not a critisim just curious.
  23. Must admit I was starting to get concerned with our departure date a week off, been looking forward to this family trip (our first ski trip OS) for nearly a year now
