  1. Will be leaving Japan on April 18. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taman_Negara It's just a little appetizer before the MAldives mate
  2. yeah thanks spook. That would be a scary thing to have happen eh! We are not doing a trek or anything like that. Just staying somewhere pretty cushy but in the jungle, and doing some short activities from there including the night safari. I have checked the place out and it looks fine. I have read up a bit on the whole malaria thing and am aware of the things you pointed out. I have pretty much come to the same conclusions as you. I aksed specifically about malarone because it seems to be a newer but possibly quite effective malaria drug with fewer of those major side effects (repor
  3. yep, I hear ya. This newer one Malarone only needs to be taken 2 days before and 7 days after though, and with very few side effects apparently, which got me interested. It's the first new malaria drug developed in something like 30 years.
  4. yeah but that won't work while we are sitting in a hide in the jungle in the middle of the night... Dunno if it is necessary, but am certainly considering it.
  5. no probs there mate. Yeah, short time I know, but it only takes one bite right? And as I said we are gonna be right in the one area that is actually on the Malaysia warning list AND going out at night into the jungle. Better safe than sorry was my thought I ordered some bloody strong deet stuff from Aus already, so will be covering up with that for sure.
  6. I know CB, Indo, Mantas and others were talking about the malaria drugs and the bad side effects about a year ago, but have any of you used Malorone? Supposedly the side effects are minimal (nowhere near the horrible things that the others do), and I just discovered that we are gonna be heading deep into one of Malaysia's few high-risk Malaria areas (Taman Negara) for 4 or 5 days, and doing some night jungle watching (right when the mosquitos are at their most active!). So I am seriously considering some kind of drug for it. Anyone used it?
  7. We ended up going with J luggage mate. Couldn't be arsed looking aorund too much. Too many other things to sort out. Shouldn't hijack this thread though...
  8. yep, they are blown a bit out of proportion, but the incident a few days ago got barely a mention on the nightly news shows. They had a story about it, and the main presenter said something about the Japanese anger towards it, but there was no real feeling of outrage or anger in the story itself. They said the words, but it seemed to be more of a "ah... again..." kind of feeling.

  10. nice one flipside We do get powder here from time to time, but you have to be on it pretty quickly or it gets tracked and doesn't reappear for days or weeks at a time.
  11. nah, TB, if you are a more serious photo buff, then get a dslr, and then get the oly as your water/snow camera! Or go for a waterproof case for your dslr! But really, if you are wanting something to stash in your pocket then the cases for cameras get a bit too bulky.
  12. you'll have to hansei that when I get to kansai mate!
  13. the olympus compacts are almost indestructable too though. You can drop them on cement from 2 or 3 meters and no problems.
  14. size is what would keep me out of that. Especially cos you can't just tuck that into your wetsuit when surfing, or a pocket when swimming. It was great having the smaller normal size compact while surfing and rafting last summer eh cb!
  15. Yeah CB Definitely don't want to do another trip like that! We'll have to hansei that for sure when I'm in kansai!
  16. IT's when you sit back with a beer and "reflect" on all the shit things in your day, or the things you did wrong. You have to have a drink for each one
  17. I have the Olympus 720s (730??) and it is great for the surf and the snow.
