  1. can't be that bad you've recovered enough to post this. I can't relate as I'm such a light weight I'd be dead before I got to your state ....wait a minute it's all coming back to me...Germany...beer...Techilla Slammers...next day at work I lay on the floor while co-workers covered for me.....uuurgh the memory of it makes me want..to......I can't find the instant graemlin for Throw Up.....too late
  2. I know it seems daft asking about boarding/skiing in Sweden on the SJ site but there seems to be a lot of experience here compared to the other forums I visit, so here goes; Just heard that work is sending me to Stockholm, Sweden for a couple of days and I had the bright idea of trying to tie it up with a weekend of boarding (this will require my sneakiest diplomatic skills) Is there any where within easy reach of Stockholm (under 3 hours)? I'll be there at beginning of Feb. I've heard it'll be damned cold and conditions will be intermittent, but I live in the UK, boarding down a rubble e
  3. one of my best christmas days was last year; sat eating ramen with the kids at Ohdai ski slope in Akita. Beautiful snow covered mountain, probably the best ramen i've eaten (and very cheap) and then day spent boarding, sledging and building snowmen in the sun. Every Christmas should be like that. Never missed the turkey.
  4. Sunrise: I was being very sweeping im my condemnation of Rousseau. I really liked the exhibition. The Yokohama Triennale is on until the 18th December; http://www.yokohama2005.jp/en/ I know stuck here in London and it's snowing in Japan....I am jealous. As far as painting outdoors, I haven't done that in years. I used to cycle around in Europe, sketchbook at the ready. Maybe I should get my sketchbook out when I go boarding...
  5. Pop I think it is. I'm off to buy it after work, for an evening of chillin, inside and out; snow forecast for UK tonight, even in the south. Bodes well for my Alps trip next month. fb_steve and spook; thanks for the info. I'll probably end up working my way thru' your lists and spend all my trip money on DVDs.
  6. When you off to Switzerland BagOfCrisps? I'm off to Avoriaz (France/Swiss border) at New Year. My only trip this season, but I think it'll be Japan for Christmas 06/07. The anticpation is killing me, praying to the snowgods for some bounty. I am coping with it my salivating over what new gear I want/need/can afford.
  7. I can't sit here just reading snow forecasts and watching webcams anymore. I want to watch some boarding action on DVD. The only thing I've got is the HH DVD: Happy Happy. Very good.Thought the tunes on there were pretty good as well. I'm not into too much stuff in the park, I prefer all mountain carving, speed, mad idiots jumping off cliffs that sort of thing. Got any recommendations?
  8. Quote: I bought some gear a while back, not properly setup yet and just messing around at the moment but I'm really into the idea of it all. torihada - you paint for a living? Nope. I'd be living in my studio, eating cat food and p*****g in the sink (I've had art tutors that fill that criteria, plus turning up for tutorials in the morning drunk). I have sold work, to clients, art consultants etc in the past but very sporadically. I now have a good body of work from the last year and need to get it shown. But I squeeze my painting in between a full time job, 2 kids and my otaku-sn
  9. way hey. I'm on my 3rd ipod. Apple store gave me my second ipod mini replacement. It went to join the otherone in appleland along with bettyx's missing tunes. First ipod; knackered battery. Second ipod; frozen/corrupted screen (after less than a month). Gotta give it to em; good service, no complaints just handed over a new one. mmmm maybe they're used to replacing defective ipods..? I just hope when this one packs in, it'll be before the end of my one year warranty. I think ipod must've had a lot of problems with the mini (work colleague's mini's battery is up the swanny after 8 mo
  10. That'll be Real Ale. None of that fizzy pop that keeps them cool down under. The only way you can drink most lagers is ice cold, 'cause once they warm up they are undrinkable. My favourite beer; Theakston's 'Old Peculiar'. Black and flat. We all hate living in London, we're only here for the money, all the real Londeners moved out years ago.
  11. mmmmmmmmm I was in the my studio today (I'm a painter). It doesn't pay the mortgage or even a new pair of snowboard trousers(sitting with their tags on wating for an alpine adventure). I work in a art gallery and that sorts out the former. For me painting and boarding are in the same boat, when they're both going well you're completely lost in the experience, you manage to detach your thinking brain. When the painting is going badly it's misery, I suppose like trying to board on ice, lots of pain. Yeah Sakebomb. 5 years for me, finishing with a postgrad in Fine Art. Fantastic time
  12. I finally took my ipod mini back to Apple store London. The 'genius' listened to my problems, then opened a cupboard stacked full of little brown boxes (all ready for return posting back to apple) and gave me a new ipod :-) One month later and my new mini is playing up. It has the latest firmware, and now I have to press reset every time to get it working. I actually berated Mrs T for treating it wrong by not switching it off properly (she does) and not using the playlists I put on (to save the battery). Apple's mind control is working; I am blaming my wife for their inferior product. I t
  13. Wotcha I am boarding in Avoriaz (France) for 8 days at the end of December. Its on the border with Switzerland - part of the Portes de Soleil area of interlinked resorts. Was going to follow Sanno's advice and go to Flaine but hooked up with some other boarders. If I get time I'll post some photos, but hopefully I'll be too busy to stop and take any photos. My fist trip to the Apls and my only other experience is Tohoku. Can't wait.
  14. London: Tate Modern definitley worth a visit. If you're in London between 21st - 24th October and you like art (in your face, contemporary and conceptual) the Frieze Art Fair is definitely worth a visit; http://www.friezeartfair.com/ one of the best art fairs in the world.
  15. Thanks for the info. Have been looking around and I think Flaine might be right up our street.Cheers for the pointer Sanno. Especially looking forward to the architecture. Have possibly roped in 2 other boarders to split the cost. I think Flaine will be a good bet as its high and we're going for dec 31st. Looked at Tignes Prices. So time to buy some snow chains and gird my loins for the 1200 mile round trip. Cheers.
  16. It's the start on my second season (I hope). Last Dec/Jan spent 3 weeks in Akita boarding. Lovely fresh powder and empty slopes. Can't afford to come to Japan this winter so thought cheap option might be France??? (I'll drive from UK). Any resort ideas/preferences? Mrs T is a novice boarder(some lessons in Japan last year and enjoyed the nursery slopes at Tazawako)while I progressed to getting down the advanced runs without breaking anything. We don't need rowdy apre-ski, somewhere chilled and cheap. I think I have been spoilt by all that lovely nihon powder and no lift lines, but want to e
  17. Congrats. My honeymoon was a trip to Japan (first meeting of the j-inlaws...just a little stressful, but they were fantastic)and included my fist visit to an onsen in Awara near Tojinbo. I remember sitting in the roten furo at midnight with large snow flakes settling on my head. It was a fantastic experience, luxurious meals served in your room by kimono clad women, 24 hour access to the furo, beautiful snow covered gardens......then we got the bill We could only afford one night. We had a wedding in the UK, we actually got married at 11:10 am on the 11th of the November (armistice da
  18. My daughter (6) has just started attending a Japanese school every Saturday am here in London. My wife had already schooled her in hiragana, she's now starting her first kanji. My son (4) attends a Jap nursery every sat am. My daughter's studying is a lot of work for my wife. Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji practice every day (or it's supposed to be). My wife spoke Japanese to them from day one, but they have been looked after by childminders so have been immersed in English from the start. I speak as much of my crappy nihongo as I can; simple conversations with the kids, but they always an
  19. Quote: Originally posted by scouser: That sucks torihada. Were you giving it some heavy usage before it conked out?? Scouser; re my crappy battery on my ipod; Not really. It appears to be working better now...except it occasionaly shuts down when you change tracks. I have heard that if you let the battery run flat it can prove difficult to recharge. Which I did.I am now treating it very tenderly, and charging it before it gets too low. I have a PC and don't mind itunes too much. Except I had to de-install itunes as there was a software/hardware conflict with the new version and re-i
  20. I have 2ng gen ipod mini 6gb. I pondered for ages before buying because of reported battery probs.Thought 2nd gen minis had better battery life. Bought in Feb, battery now wont hold it's charge. Apple store told me to return to Apple for repair under warranty. Did and received it back yesterday. They said it was fine 'working within apple's parameters'. Plugged it in and charged all day today at work. Lasted for 15 mins on commute home. No power, battery error message.Off to Apple store tomorrow to complain (to which they'll say once again; return to Apple) :-( I liked the look of the Son
  21. definitely a scam. Thamesmead should be enough to put you off. It's where A Clockwork Orange was filmed and it looks worse now than when Kubrick was there. A truly depressing place. Then again if I lived in Thamesmead I'd be trying to get out by all means necessary.
  22. I was in a very wet Norfolk, (UK) yesterday at a friend's house. He gave me fresh figs and gorgonzola for lunch...mmmmmmmmm......delicious....my first fresh figs. He'd grown them all himself and had harvested around 100 so far this season, from trees he planted 7/8 years ago. I ate them ala Alan Bates.
  23. Well I joined this forum as a novice snowboarder visitng Japan last winter and now I am off to Brittany (north west France) for family holiday. Have discovered surf school near to where we are staying. I'm taking my (cheap) shortie wetsuit and body board and now I am hoping to have a crash 2 week course in surfing (in French....wont please mayor of Tokyo). Question is; 3 weeks solid boarding in Akita last winter saw me advance realy quickly, are any of the skills transferrable? Regarding surfing in UK, friends this weekend loaded their VW's and drove to Wales. This is very Japanese as th
  24. I think this may be better than George's effort http://www.storewars.org/flash/index.html
