Thanks Mr Wiggles, I think I understand. (Though why can't un-connected keitais talk to the satellites? Or is that just a thingy that they have in the satnav that isn't in a mobile?) Updating maps is hardly an issue for me, it's not as if major roads are going to change and the whole idea is only a convenience thing.

OK thanks, seems to be getting there bit by bit. As I thought the keitai route is not something that will work. So, if I bought one of these cheap sat-nav things, if there is no monthly data cost (?), how do those babies "connect" to the thingy?

I don't have a data package plan on my phone, and don't want to. So is what you say free then?

Thanks folks. For a smartphone one to work though, don't you need the data package on your phone? That's what confuses me. If I can just plug and play one I buy for the car and don't need to sign up and pay for any kind of data..
