  1. haha, i don't think i should be proud of that compliment! at least from the standpoint of my wallet... usually they delaminate from doing spins, and landing with one ski angling into the other ski. one time i ran into a tree with one ski and bent it pretty good (beyond repair). i've also ripped the edge off the inside of a ski (a long section along one side of the ski - i couldn't turn). so basically i don't break my skiis in half or anything that dramatic, but i hurt them badly enough that no amount of glue and/or duct tape will fix them. actually, you can check out my current glue
  2. my skiis break every two years. usually right before my warrenty ends. funny how these things work out. but after the first 3 months of use they are usually pretty beat up. bindings last 2 years, boots 3. poles last about 2-3 months, although this time i bought some rental poles - they are the ugliest things you've ever seenbut are apparently unbreakable.. we'll see about that.
  3. ok, i found the best tradeoff between speed and price: the ferry. for 7000 yen, you can go from kyoto to hokkaido in just over 24 hours. not bad eh. the ferries run every day, and leave at 10 pm - and get there the next next day at 4:00 am. i imagine the trip will be pretty beautiful too. best of all it runs all year around, so you aren't restricted to this "10000" yen deal that all the domestic airlines have. i'm there! peace!
  4. cool -- thanks man! i guess my profile needs updatin' cuz i'm living in kyoto now... and getting sick of indoor skiing
  5. hi everyone. i need to get to hokkaido this winter for a few weeks, and am wondering the cheapest/fastest way to do that. i think time rules out everything except for a plane, but i don't know how cheap flights get (or rather, how less expensive). does anyone have ranges? once i get there i have a place to stay and transportation etc, so i just need a way there. thanks! dan
  6. i go all the time to snova kobe. i love it. the one make (table jump) is kind of small but i've met some cool japanese skiiers there. the snow is soft and it is quite warm (only about -2 deg celcius). it's also relatively cheap dan
  7. Hey everyone! Yep, I've been going once a week usually. It costs 2500 yen for 2 hours, and then 600 yen thereafter. I used to go after work, but since I live near Nara that usually meant I could only ski for 2 hours. I like to go on the weekends because you can go for 5 hours for 3700 yen. I still go during the week as well though too. It's really easy to get to - just take the Hanshin line and get off at Nishinada (it's a 2 minute walk from there). I won't go for a week or so because relatives are visiting me now but after that I'm definitely gonna have to scratch the skiing itch that
  8. Hi all, Has anyone been to the above ski hill before? If so what are your thougths on it... Also, how do you get there from Osaka? They speak Japanese only, so I couldn't get directions. Thanks, Dan
  9. How much do goggles/poles/backcountry shovels/other "secondary equipment" (ie. not the skiis themselves) cost in Japan? Are they unreasonable? Thanks, Dan
  10. Yes but I don't mean that kind. I think it means jump maybe? Anybody? They say "one make"
  11. Hi what is make, used to describe the facilities of some of the artificial slopes. Thanks, Dan
  12. Hey Rach, It's a really trick oriented style of skiing - be it tricks all over the mountain, in a park or in a half pipe. Check out http://www.freeridezone.com/multimedia/default.htm It's also known by several other names... freeriding, etc. Dan
  13. Hi everyone, This is a great site!! I'm going to Japan in June, and am wondering how the newschool ski scene is over there. I'll be living in Kyoto, are there any good hills nearby for parks or just good natural hits? Also, how tolerant are the Japanese to building jumps? (is there much backcountry for this at your average mountain?) Do many of the indoor ski hills have parks? Thanks, Dan
  14. Thanks Snapper. Good site been reading loads over the last few weeks. Makes me want to be over there all the more.
  15. None yet, but it looks like I will be getting over there next season.
  16. I have heard of the "combustion engine" and "car engine" (heard they may even be one and the same in concept) but the "search engine"? is a little unfamiliar - what is that? Seriously, tried them, but they are crap basically.
  17. What so all events were held in Hakuba? Which of the resorts in Hakuba? Thankx
  18. Which resorts? I really want to go to Japan now after checking out this site! Getting into the idea to check out all this snow next season, but don't know where the Olympic events were held.
  19. I'm in the UK and never been to Japan but found this site from a skiing site in the US, and it's well sweet....one of the best winter sports sites I have ever seen. You guys are well lucky to have this at your disposal! Makes me want to visit Japan!
