  1. so i've never really done much backcountry skiing (besides the occasional rope-ducking) and was wondering... what are the necessary skills and equipment... i.e. what level skier/boarder should you be, what do you need to carry with you what kind of mountaineering skills do you need, how many people should you travel with...etc... just curious...wanna try it for real one day danz ------------------ pray for snow
  2. well ocean11... that is just because of our high society high class upbringing...you know, table manners, potty training, and even how to get dressed... danz ------------------ pray for snow
  3. hey...I can't get in there I get an error: "An unknown error occurred while connecting to the DigiChat Server. Please report the error to support@digichat.com java.lang.Exception: HttpServlet address not specified " anyone else get this ?? does it have anything to do with firewalls at work?? danz
  4. snow riding??? i think in japanese they just say suberu...or maybe i'm wrong... mogski...you are making my brain hurt... this shouldn't be so hard danz ------------------ pray for snow
  5. are you guys trying to get me fired from work... damn... danz ------------------ pray for snow
  6. No music... just random announcements at a fairly regular interval...i think they are for missing people or something...annoying, but much easier to block out that glay danz ------------------ pray for snow
  7. Aizu Kogen Takatue does NOT PLAY JPOP! It is true...no annoying tunes as you crawl up the slow single chair... danz ------------------ pray for snow
  8. forget the footrests... I want more high speed quads! lifts are too slow in japan... and liftlines are worse...they need to work on lift line organization skills here...single lines don't even start until you are like 5 people away from the lift... (you can ignore my whining if you want...) danz ------------------ pray for snow
  9. shaped skis refer to the sidecut of the ski... they have been around for almost 5yrs now... but have evovled alot since they came about...the main point is the sidecut of the ski is much more pronounced than in the traditional "straight" ski... what does that mean?? Super easy carving lots more fun, lot less work they are amazing.... danz ------------------ pray for snow
  10. I have a friend that used to work at a resort in japan (forget where)...she said if you get caught out of bounds by patrol, they will just yell at you...you know like "bad boy...don't do it again", but that's it...you can still ski... throw in some "gaijin power" and I don't think there is anything to worry about... on a related story...i've seen US ski patrolers to some really nasty shit...this guy ducked some ropes to enter a huge bowl... patrol watched him ski down, caught up to him at the bottom, yanked his pass, and then made him hike back to where he entered...harsh....
  11. I just spent the last week up near Hunter in Tochigii...and it %&$#*^# DUMPED... In 3 days I would say at least 1meter fell in those mtns... Hunter is not a mountain for powder skiing... it is very similar to New England Skiing... good for training and working on technique... but not much else...and its like a 80% boarder mtn...just for your info... Aizu Kogen Takatue (fukusima), however, rocks...a little hiking off the single chair gave me powder all day...I think only 3 other people tried to hike...and it was only like a 15min deal... nice pitch, long, and D
  12. hey badmigrane... I completely agree... I've been to 5 different resorts now, and I always have the feeling that they are underdeveloped...I look around and see tons of rideable steeps and other terrain, but 0 access...add to that slow single/double chair lifts, and you do not have the greatest resorts around... high speed detachable quads have not caught on here yet (it seems)... but... the snow is good...and if you are willing to hike, you can ski freshies all day...definetly a bonus... danz
  13. moguls are generally created naturally... they are formed from the spray of the snow created by turning... there are also machine made mogul fields too...kind of common on the east coast in the US...but many times they turn out kind of awkward... danz
  14. I believe its a ski resort somewhere in Tochigi, or maybee fukushima... anyway, i think its near Hunter
  15. anyone know anything about this place?? thanks danz ------------------ pray for snow
  16. well this is very interesting.... alright, NoFakie, I actually agree with alot of what you said, but these aspects, and the fashion stuff too, are relics of the past...that elitist feel you talk about is so very 80's...admittingly, "new school" skiing has learned much from snowboarding, both fashion and attitude... sure, if you go to Aspen you will still find women in one-piece silver lined furr ski-outfits, but that is not what its about... I think fundamently skiing and snowboarding are similiar, and there is no need to seperate the 2... skiing is a snow riding sport...with
  17. ocean11... if your point is the stupidity of resorts that don't allow 50% of potential customers to spend their money there, than I agree.... but bashing skiing because of fashion???? please...you can do better than that ocean11...I hope that is not what brings you to the mtn... and the mogul bit...just accept it... it will never go away... danz ------------------ pray for snow
  18. hey now.... calm down there ocean11.... mogul skiing is a skill, just like boarding in a pipe...which i might remind you ban skiers (meaning boarder only terrain parks) in many a resort (at least in the us...) i have no problems with resorts dedicating more and more space for terrain parks, rail slides, and other "boarder friendly" ammenities, so don't complain about our precious mogul fields... and like yillow says...why can't we just get along... danz the skier ------------------ pray for snow
  19. Fight the POWER! (but keep the mogul fields...) skier danz ------------------ pray for snow
  20. what do you mean riddles?? I've never been to Happo-one... please explain... ------------------ pray for snow
  21. yo martin? cal? kuma?? whatever happened to this xmas #$%! up?? anyone?? I can't go skiing this weekend, so might as well party in tokyo?? what's the dilly yo? danz ------------------ pray for snow
  22. ocean11 speaks the truth... a wise man indeed danz ------------------ pray for snow
  23. hey helen.... well, i can only speak for myself... i didn't think it was that cold, but the weather made it feel pretty cold on the long travessing flats (high winds, white out conditions,snow)... I grew up in wisconsin, so i don't complain unless it gets below 0F... and I also spent the last 6yrs skiing in the east coast, where skiing during a downpoar (rain that is) is not so odd... so maybee you are asking the wrong guy... danz ------------------ pray for snow
  24. so is anything going on?? whats the word?? danz ------------------ pray for snow
  25. this thread is very painfull to read... i don't believe any of you... danz ------------------ pray for snow
