No I've been back to Hakkoda 5-6 times since then and have a 4 day stint planned there this weekend. Out of those 5-6 times I've had another person with me half the time, and we ventured out far and wide. By myself I stick to within eyesight of the trail in unfamiliar portions and off trail only where I've been 1000 times already. No new adventures when I'm alone!

Yeah, the Ropeway was closed today, but due to 101kmh sustained winds! Chair lift was open, and you can still hit good runs from there, so all is well.

Appi closed by the end of march as well as many other northern iwate and Aomori resorts, stating that the continuing strong aftershocks presented to great of a hazard to lift operation.

No, I'm very familiar with where you are talking about though I took off left of the direct course from the top and was working my way right the entire time before I hit the ravine. I've been all over this mountain but every time there's something new waiting to bite your ass.

I just got back from almost dying a slow freezing death at Hakkoda today. I did a nice little slack country run on my first trip down.. one I had never done before. Of course I was going to do it again the second time round. Well I did, and I missed a CRUCIAL turn somewhere without noticing. It was 2:00PM. I have no idea how but I wound up in the ravine just like you. I knew that was not a safe way to keep going so I decided the only sensible choice was to follow my own track back UPHILL. sorry to change the subject for a minute, but I HEADED UP today to Hakkoda and had a great day etc etc. One thing realllllly pissed me off though, and it has happened more than one time. Early in the morning before the lift opened up some Aussie guys rolled in. I said "Hey, how's it going?" No I didn't know them, but we are in a place where very few people speak English. Hakkoda tomorrow

Appi is sweet when it snows, sucks when it's not. Honestly with Hakkoda only 70km away it's kinda hard to find a reason to search for a bunch of other places. Hakkoda is any run you want it to be. There is a place called Shizukuishi that is 100% awesome. Need to go back there actually.

It was snowing super hard when I left by the way today and there was already a fresh 30 INCHES on the ground.. It was REALLY hard to ride, and maybe not the greatest conditions to go full backcountry crazy if that's what you were planning. It's 30+ inches of the super dry light snow. I never saw as many people stuck in the snow as I did today.

I ride a 180cm at Hakkoda and at full tilt the nose will shudder. I don't think it's uncommon for that to happen. Sucks you weren't at Hakkkoda today. A bunch of us were there.

Just woke up to 20~ cm of fresh snow in Misawa! If it snows here then it is absolutely destroying Hakkoda with snow ! On my way in a few hours! The road to Hakkoda doesn't open until 7:30
