The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and what a fine morning it really is. That was one good March storm yesterday. Hakuba Cortina report 40-60cm. Hakuba 47 were talking about 20cm during the day yesterday and another 0-5cm overnight. Other resorts seem reluctant to brag about numbers; which to me always seems odd. If I were a skijo, I'd be shouting it out on a morning like this. But, as I am not a skijo and aren't being told those numbers, I just have to imagine it! Never mind the exact numbers though, there'll be some great conditions to enjoy today pretty much anywhere you decided to slide. The sun is out as well this morning and it is a cold start, so pretty much as perfect conditions as we can expect for the second half of March. There's every likelihood that we have just experienced the last blast of winter with sun and a real warming trend ahead of us starting tomorrow. Let's worry about warm conditions later; for now it should be a really great weekend for Hakuba. Do take care out there - fresh snow on hard ice; an avalanche incident apparently involving a fatality over near Tsugaike Kogen made the national news yesterday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba, and a fine morning it is as well. Lots of blue sky above Hakuba village this morning, some clouds still hanging on around the peaks of the mountain backdrop, but mostly fine and sunny. A splattering of snow on the mountains though a few cm at most. It got quite cold overnight with a low of -5C, but by mid afternoon today it should have risen to perhaps around +5C. Tomorrow should continue with the sun in the morning and it's due to get warmer than today and rain is expected later on. Hopefully once the lifts have stopped for the day, and there might be some snowfall at higher elevations at night. Warmer temperatures through at least the first half of the coming week and more chance of rain than snow. Though, there's some promise around Thursday of the chance of a cold snap and more snowfall so let's keep an eye on that. For now though, best to come expecting spring conditions and enjoy them for what they are. Quite a few events going on today on the slopes - at Happo-one alone they have the All Nihon Technical Competition at Usagidaira, Ladies Snowsurf Day at Happo Banks and the Hakuba Snowshoe Trail run at Nakiyama. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Temperatures dropped down to minus double figures overnight again and as of 9am it is around -6C here in Hakuba. So another good cold start to the day. And we have new snowfall to report as well from around the mountains. Cortina winning with an impressive 30cm being reported, with between 10-20cm being reported on upper slopes here in Hakuba. It should be a very fine morning. We have magnificent clear blue skies as well this morning. Lovely. (I'll try not to spoil things by mentioning that things are due to warm up from tomorrow and we might get some rain in the village before turning into snow around early Thursday... more on that tomorrow). So really great at the moment for approaching mid-March as we are. I clearly remember this day three years ago actually - it's 3 years ago since the terrible earthquake and tsunami over on the Tohoku coastline. That was one scary day... The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning and good news I have. Yes, we do have that snow that we were promised. I haven't been up myself yet of course but resorts are reporting 15-20cm of fresh on upper resort areas this morning. 5-10cm on lower areas, but it is still snowing now and hopefully should be for the rest of the day today and tonight. Good to see snow on the roads again. Let's see how much we can get piling up! Tomorrow onwards it's looking like the coming week will be mostly clearer and lots of sun and really warming up mid week, so this could well be our last taste of 'winter' for the season. So we want as much snow squeezed out of those clouds as possible. Anyway I'm off to play in this fresh snow. Until tomorrow! A bit less warm tomorrow and rain on the forecast, though still I see snow mentioned for high elevations with the freezing point set to drop below 1500m. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's another chilly start to the day and it should be keeping quite cold today. A lot of cloud remained with us yesterday but we did get some blue sky as well and the sun was out for lots of the afternoon. On to this morning and we had some very light snow slowly falling earlier this morning and resorts have a bit more to report with a slight dusting at base: Happo-one: 5cm (Riesen) Hakuba Goryu: 3cm Hakuba 47: 1cm around base; 5cm up top Hakuba Cortina: 1cm Looks like early on the mountains are shrouded in cloud (fog?) and visibility is poor, though I would expect there's a good chance that it might clear up again similarly to yesterday. Light snow showers possible during the today. We're expecting things to start warming up again from tomorrow and there will very probably be lots of sun in the coming week. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and the snow we were hoping for has arrived, well sort of. Just sprinklings at base - roads are clear - but resorts reporting fresh snow on the mountains. Here's what the resorts are reporting this morning... Happo-one: 5+cm Hakuba Goryu: 3cm at Toomi; 10cm up top Hakuba 47: 1cm around base; 5cm up top Hakuba Cortina: 15-20cm Cortina doing well with up to 20cm up there, looks like more like 5-10cm around the Hakuba hills. It's much better than 0cm that's for sure! And it is certainly colder than it has been this morning. It's not snowing now and just cloudy really. Some hints of blue sky even so it might clear up. Snow clouds may stick in the region though through tomorrow so we might get a bit more out of this. Once we get to Monday it would seem warmer conditions and sun will be back, so this really might just be the last snow we see this season. Hakuba Goryu: Plans to be open until early May. We were expecting sun this morning but to start the day off there's lots of cloud, it's rather dull and actually poor visibility up on the mountains by the looks of the webcams. Forecasts still say it's sun for the day, so perhaps it will clear up this morning. High temps or around 10C expected. Mixed forecasts for tomorrow as well with some telling us to expect some rain, others not. They agree that it will probably be warmer tomorrow though. No sakura to report yet! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was a beautiful day in Hakuba yesterday. Almost borderline warm as well in the early afternoon. The mountains were looking spectacular with white topped background with the remaining colours of autumn at village level. Great stuff. See photo attached to this report. For the record, the first snow recorded falling up at the top of Goryu was on 2nd November. (All gone now for the moment). It has been changeable over the last few weeks with things being getting very cold at times. Stoeves are ready, gardens are being prepared for the winter and all of the locals are busy busy making their last minute preparations for the coming busy winter season. And it's not too far away now. Looks like we are heading for some colder conditions tomorrow with some cold rain forecast later in the day... and the chance of a bit of sleet or snow as well if we are lucky. Whether that will come down to near village level or not, we'll just have to see. The snow season is just around the corner now though with the first lifts hoping to be moving in just a few weeks time. Once we get to the later part of the month it's all a case of when they can start moving. Hakuba Now will be with you this season as well, and we'll do our best to provide you with fun and fact-filled reports every day. Gambarimasu. Not that much going on down at village level for the most part, coming down nicely at one point yesterday evening, but better news higher up on the mountains. Yesterday Happo was reporting 20+cm of nice quality dry fresh snowfall up around Kurobishi and Usagidaira. There's snow down by the side of roads in the village this morning as well, I would say around 5cm or so in places. Light snow in the village; heavy snow in the mountains is what Happo guys have been saying. Nice. But we want more! Resorts around the village are of course largely on stand-by and you can be sure that as soon as there's enough snow they'll be getting lifts moving. Who will be first?! With snow on the forecast right through from today until Sunday - and looking like it might be decent snowfall too at times - I think we might be seeing the first action pretty soon. Things might move fast over the next few days, but I will do my best and keep on top of the situation for you! Gambarimasu. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . More snow to report this morning and I'm happy to report that today marks the official start of the season in Hakuba with Happo-one part opening from 9am this morning. The Adam Gondola lift at Happo will start moving at 9am this morning. That and the Kokusai Number 1 lift take you up to the ski-able area - which is the Panorama Course. The Kokusai Number 3 and Panorama lifts will be open (from 9:10am) up there. It's cold and poor visibility so if you are going to head out, be prepared! Snow clouds are expected to be with us at least until Sunday, so here's to all that snow we are waiting for. I have been trying to find out about any more possible openings early this morning with other resorts but haven't been able to confirm anything. With the snow continuing to fall I would definitely expect more to be happening tomorrow. Some bits of info just for now: 10cm or so of snow at base areas and counting. Happo-one are reporting 30cm of snowfall and a temperature of -5 degrees at the Usagidaira area of the resort, with heavy snow falling up there. RESORT INFO UPDATE AT 9:30AM Hakuba Goryu is open as well, and fittingly are also opening their Panorama Course up top - the Gondola gets you up there and the Alps Number 1 lift is servicing the run. Open until 4pm. They are reporting 80cm of snow. Cost is 2500 yen for adults and 1350 yen for children. Tsugaike Kogen are also open this morning with the Han-no-ki pair lift moving and the Gondola lift getting you there. They are reporting 100cm of snow on the upper slopes this morning. (Sadly, they don't also have a 'Panorama Course' to open. They should make one. ;)) As of 9am, Hakuba 47 were in the process of checking everything and planning to announce their plans this afternoon. They have even hinted at the chance of a 'full open' from tomorrow. Depending on snow conditions of course. RESORT INFO UPDATE AT 12:45PM The Hakuba 47 resort have made their announcement, and excite it is too. They are planning to be almost-all-open ('hobo zenmen') tomorrow and Sunday with it possible to ski or board from top to bottom. And presumably beyond Sunday as well! Yey. That's it for the updates today. There will be no doubt further developments tomorrow to report. For now though... open for the weekend!
