  • Myoko Now: Monday 29th February 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 733cm Posted on Monday 29th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The day started with high winds during the night, and moved into (ugh) rain earlier. But, as predicted, that freezing line is coming down the hill fast, and we are now seeing light snow outside. We have some pretty strong winds coming in offshore from the west, which hopefully is a good sign that we might end February with solid snowfall later in the day. Those winds already brought the snowpack down a bit, so any snow now is really welcome (needed, even). And even as I'm writing here, the winds are shifting around a bit to the west, and the snow is starting to pick up. Looks really good out there. Hope to be back tomorrow with some good news. The temperatures below are what were reported officially earlier; it's going to be colder than that now. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 722cm Posted on Thursday 25th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another jaw dropper: it kept on snowing overnight and into the morning! It looks like... it looks like a good December out there (we have no snow walls to mention this year). It's not particularly heavy at the moment, but it is falling steadily, and that has meant another 25cm by morning. And, of course, this is the day that the snowthrower threw its fan belt.... Well, we can always find some sort of machinery to deal with the snow; the important thing is that it is snowing out there, and the resorts are reporting an increase in snow cover. After a season of writing grim snow reports, I have this warm feeling inside. If this keeps up, maybe we'll have some spring skiing, and resorts staying open as planned (not to jinx anything; the snowpack really is low, and one good south wind with rain can eat a sizeable portion of it!). I have to run early this morning, so all old reports are marked with an * Myoko Now 2015-2016 season Data as of Thursday 25th February 2016 Total snowfall at base so far 722cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 43 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 53cm (10th February) November 2015 snowfall 0cm December 2015 snowfall 140cm reported on 9 days January 2015 snowfall 267cm reported on 18 days February 2015 snowfall 315cm reported on 16 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Myoko. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Not much snow overnight - I'll be generous and say we had 2cm - but it has started up again in the last few minutes. I notice that some of the ski areas are showing +10cm or so, so perhaps there was more snow higher up during the day. It was coming down pretty hard during the Yama no Kami (mountain god) ceremony yesterday mid-slope at Akakura Kanko. Maybe a good sign for the rest of the season... at least, as all the local dignitaries there said, it wasn't raining. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow is forecast for later in the day, but right now it's sunny and nice out there. We got an extra 10cm or so through the day yesterday, so white cars and blue skies to start Friday. Some really nice conditions reported yesterday, especially in the side/backcountry. Nice to see people enjoying some genuine powder. It's also a cold cold morning, following that clear sky overnight. I have to run early this morning, so all old reports are marked with an *. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 814cm Posted on Monday 14th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Woke up to some fresh, if very wet, snow. It's still coming down, light but steady, although it's piling up as slush rather than snow at our location here (about 670 meters, just below Akakan). We have about 5cm on the ground, which looks about the same up on the hill (Akakan and Suginohara both added another 5cm to their snowpack figures today, too). We could be getting more light snow through the week, until that freezing line does start heading up again. At least there might be some sun before the possibility of rain on the weekend. At this point, it might as well be sunny and pleasant, since we most likely aren't going to see any major snowfall again this season. It's getting pretty foggy at the moment, too, but at least snow is involved. Sunny, not too hot, white trees up on the hill.... could be a lot worse! We might get some more, especially tomorrow, but that's going to be it for a while. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Nature has a way of surprising us, doesn't it? I had to leave early yesterday, didn't think much would happen (so neglecting the report for one day is OK, right?) and then it decides to snow. And snow. And it's still snowing! I got a report from a friend high up on the mountain: 60 to 70cm of light powder up there. This could be the best snowfall of the year. After most people have left, and we thought it was time to get the canoe out. He did add that it's pretty sluffy, too, lower down in the backcountry, so be a little careful (don't go alone, have all your safety gear). Should be great on the groomers, too, even if it is a little bit heavy. The wind has picked up a bit as well; there's a pretty strong north wind blowing offshore and up over the mountains (and therefore snow). I guess we should enjoy this while we can; the freeze level will be heading back up to around 2,000 meters, and rain is back on the forecast around Wednesday. Happy to say it, but the snowpack reports are in the positive. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . An early report today, because there's a race up on the hill and I will be sitting by a gate making sure everything is OK... The snow tapered off yesterday soon after the report was up, so we only got about five more centimeters of snow. Not bad, of course, since we got some positive figures added to the snowpack reports. Today it's sunny, with some clouds out over the ocean that might bring some snow showers later. Looks like a really nice day for a ski (or for sitting on race course). All info below is from yesterday; probably a bit more snow at some of the resorts and higher temps today. Things are a bit nicer today than yesterday; there is still some fog (which looks to be clearing), and a light dusting of new snow, instead of the rain. It's still snowing very lightly, and there's the chance that it might clear later in the day. Not such a bad way to end a three-day weekend. The reports are barely in, but I need to get out this morning! • Myoko Now: Wednesday 17th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 301cm Posted on Wednesday 17th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The day started slow, but now we can't see with the heavy snow falling—pelting, crashing, screaming—down. The massive, once-in-25-years low pressure centered over Hokkaido is bringing high winds along the coast and up on the northern island, and steady snowfall here. No report yesterday, because maybe I didn't want to tell you it was raining/slushy. There was about 30cm of fresh this morning, so that's the fall for the record. There will definitely be more for tomorrow - the forecast for this region was around 70cm, and it could be more... The two open resorts are not sharing good information today (-3 cm and no change? Wrong, boys, wrong).
