It is going to be a fine day, and starting to warm up once again. Tomorrow will probably be clear, sunny and hot (with temps approaching 30C), with more cloud currently forecast for Sunday. As reported in an update yesterday afternoon, Kagura ski area has announced that it will be open until Sunday 12th May, one week sooner than originally planned. The announcement was sudden but not really surprising, and it feels like an achievement to be able to stay open into May this season. So, including today, there is now just 3 more days left. A last Yuzawa Now report to end the season will be posted on Sunday. --------------- Kagura Ski Area Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): 60cm (top); 0cm (base) Lifts operating (scheduled): Mitsumata Ropeway (opens from 8:00am weekdays; 7:30am weekends/holidays) Mitsumata Number 1 quad Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair Kagura Gondola Kagura Number 1 quad The Mitsumata lifts and Kagura Gondola are operating to take people over to ski run that remains open (the Kagura main course). • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 12th May 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 713cm Posted on Sunday 12th May 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Today is the last day of the ski season in Yuzawa, with Kagura closing at the end of today. The day starts cloudy and there is a southerly wind. Kagura wanted to continue until 19th May, but the snow situation wouldn’t allow that. Still, after a season of generally less snow than usual, getting to the second week of May seems like a very good showing. The fresh snow fun of the peak ski season seems so long ago now. After all, most ski areas in the Yuzawa region closed at the end of March, so we are now over six weeks later. In terms of snowfall, 2023-2024 was a weird season. You can usually rely on February to bring very good and consistent snowfall, but this year, like many other regions, we sometimes struggled with snowfall. We could only clock up 79cm in these Yuzawa Now reports, much less than expected. Towards the end of February, it looked like many ski areas might not make it past early March. But then, we got some relief in unexpectedly large amounts of snowfall, 177cm, in March. That snow was a big help, letting most ski areas close as initially planned. (Lots of data here). In some ways, February felt like March, and March felt like February. Yuzawa has had a busy winter, with many overseas visitors enjoying themselves. While people have come from all over the world, visitors from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore have been noticeable. People and businesses involved in tourism are now busy in green/summer mode. While it is much less focused than the winter season, there's still a lot going on across the region. Some summer skiing is offered on artificial mats at GALA Yuzawa and Kagura (Mitsumata). Both are scheduled to start from 13th July. Operations are usually mostly weekends only, not daily, so please check with the ski areas for details and latest information. The Fuji Rock Festival '24 will take place at Naeba Ski Area from 26th to 29th July. This year's headliner acts are Sza, Kraftwerk, and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, with tons more Japanese and overseas artists lined up to perform. Anyway, that's it from Yuzawa Now for now. I hope you enjoyed our reporting during the 2023-2024 season - and Yuzawa if you actually visited! SnowJapan is updated throughout the year, but we'll be back with our weather and snow reporting from November. Let us hope that we can enjoy heavy and consistent snowfall during the 2024-2025 season. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 2nd November 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 0cm Posted on Saturday 2nd November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Greetings from Yuzawa and welcome back to the Yuzawa Now reports. Well, summer 2024 was very hot. And autumn was hot too, right up into October. Thankfully, we are now enjoying cooler weather and even some chilly conditions at times. Long term forecasts seem to be cautiously optimistic that we might get good snowfall this coming season. Let it be so! The planned opening dates of ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma can be found below. All of those dates are, of course, subject to change. It will all depend on snowfall and weather conditions. The information on SnowJapan is in the process of being updated, something that will take us through next month. Generally there don't seem to be any major changes to report for ski areas in this region. The biggest thing is probably price rises - they are going up again this year at most ski areas; some by a few hundred yen, some by more than that. Unfortunately, three ski areas (Ishiuchi Hanaoka, Itsukamachi and Mt Granview) will be sitting out the season again. There does not seem to be any public talk of possible re-openings for those ski areas at present. (Information on Ishiuchi Hanaoka has been added to the SnowJapanHistory website here). That's it for now. -------------------------------- Here are the planned opening dates for ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. All dates are subject to change and will depend on snowfall. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 22nd November 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 0cm Posted on Friday 22nd November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It's about 8C in town and mostly cloudy with some blue sky. The news of the day is that Kagura has delayed opening. The decision was made yesterday that there is not enough snow to open as planned on Saturday (23rd). There is still snow on the main slope, as you can see below. Just not enough. So Kagura ski area is now in 'stand-by mode'. It will open as soon as there is enough snow. More snow is due on the mountains from later on today and tomorrow, so let's see if that might be enough to get things moving. (There's not much chance of snow forecast for the days beyond Sunday). It looks like we might just get rained on down at town level tomorrow. -------------------------------- Here are the planned opening dates for ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We ended up with a fine, bright day yesterday. It got pretty cold overnight and there was an early morning frost. This morning we already have clear skies and lots of sunshine. Lovely morning. Unfortunately, it is going to be windy today. There's already some wind about, but it is expected to get stronger during the day and tonight. Kagura was, of course, hoping to open from today. The wind forecast put a stop to that, and the opening has been delayed until tomorrow (Wednesday 27th November). Some rain is expected tonight but it should have cleared up by morning (hopefully). Tomorrow should be less windy, along with relatively warm daytime conditions. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 0cm Posted on Wednesday 27th November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday was very windy. It was really blowing about, and it's now easy to see why Kagura didn't open yesterday! The strong southerly wind and mild conditions won't have been kind to the snow that is up there. It's a murky and damp kind of start to the day, and a very mild 9-10C in town. At least the wind has calmed down. The weather might not be perfect, but Kagura ski area is scheduled to be open today. It is the first ski area in Niigata Prefecture to open for the season. Over the coming days, hopefully it will get colder and we will get some snow on the mountains, though it seems unlikely that we'll get any snow down to town (where it will be more like rain). Anyway, it is officially the first day of the ski season. That is definitely something to celebrate with a lot to look forward to. :) May it be a good one! ------------------------- Kagura Ski Area Official snow depth (as reported by the ski area): 30cm Available ski run Kagura main course (1,500m length, 30m width) The open ski run is serviced by the Kagura Number 1 quad lift Operating ski lifts Mitsumata Ropeway (8:00am until 4:30pm, last one going up at 2:00pm) Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift (8:00am until 3:45pm, last one going up at 2:15pm) Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair lift (8:15am until 3:45pm) Kagura Gondola (8:15am until 3:30pm, last one going up at 2:30pm) Kagura Number 1 quad lift (8:30am - 3:00pm) How to get between Mitsumata and Kagura: Some walking is required to get between Mitsumata Area over to the open ski run at Kagura A 230m walk between the top of Mitsumata Ropeway and the base of the Mitsumata quad lift A 170m walk between the top of Mitsumata quad lift and Mitsumata Number 2 pair lift It is not possible to ski in the Mitsumata Area yet (only the main run at Kagura is open) ------------------------- Planned opening dates for ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is not the most pleasant of mornings. It's rather wet this morning in town with some nasty rain coming down. Not sure if it is snowing up top but Kagura has a snow>rain icon on the official site. The webcams show that there has been a covering of snow up at Yuzawa Kogen, so Kagura has surely got some too. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Happy to report the first snowfall recorded at town level this morning. Kagura is reporting 40cm of snowfall since yesterday. I can't see any news of more lifts/courses opening (at 8:45am), but as more snow falls that is surely going to happen very soon. More snow is forecast through tomorrow and then, after a few days of possibly clearer skies, more snow is forecast from Wednesday onwards. This is all very encouraging. Nice. A definitely different feel to December so far this year... which is a good thing! And there's regular snow there on the weekly forecasts, too, though we may get to see the sun at times before the next snow around Wednesday. GALA Yuzawa is next up for opening this coming Friday, with Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen planning for a Saturday opening. I'm guessing they will be able to! -------------------------------- Ski area information for Monday 9th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 10th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 45cm Posted on Tuesday 10th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Some light snow through the night, though it has not really amounted to much more than dustings around town. There is probably some more new cm at higher elevations. With more snow due before the weekend and also beyond the weekend, the chances of ski areas being able to open as planned seems very good. What a great thing to be able to say! There will be a rush of information to tell you starting this weekend. That's when the daily routine steps up another gear or two! For now, Kagura remains open as it has been. -------------------------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 10th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 12th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this seas 64cm Posted on Thursday 12th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There's fresh snow to report this morning, along with very good news that GALA Yuzawa and Joetsu Kokusai will both open from tomorrow. First up, snow fall. It started proper last night and this morning there is 15-20cm of it on the ground, and we expect more today. No news from any ski areas on how much there might have been higher up. GALA Yuzawa will open up five courses in the Central Area (Melody, Edelweiss, Entertainment, Gigi, Grenoble... basically, all of that main section) and Joetsu Kokusai will be opening the Panorama Zone with five lifts operating to get up there. GALA Yuzawa have also turned on their webcams, so today the three images are from that ski area! Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen plan to open on Saturday and I'd say there was a close to 100% chance that will happen. Yes, we did get some rain again, but this month is feeling so much different from last December. That's a good thing. And there looks to be regular snow on the forecast for the coming week. Remember, it's still only 12th December. Fingers crossed that the encouraging weather and news will continue and it's all a good sign for the season as a whole. -------------------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 12th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report.
