- Yuzawa Now: Sunday 5th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 14cm Posted on Sunday 5th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We got rained on in town last night but that thankfully turned into snow overnight. There is a fresh (thin) layer of snow on the ground around town areas. Kagura are this morning reporting 15cm of fresh snow and a temperature of -5C. There is still a lot of cloud around but it will probably start to clear and we may end up with a bright day. The coming week brings with it mild conditions and not much chance of fresh snow - except perhaps in the much higher areas, at the times when it will probably be raining down in town. There should be a few days of clearer weather too but generally temperatures will remain mild. ---- Planned opening dates for ski areas in the region Now open - Kagura (via Mitsumata) - 4000m of course available - Mitsumata Ropeway (7:30am - 4:30pm) - Mitsumata Number 1 quad (7:30am - 3:45pm) - Mitsumata Number 2 pair (7:45am - 4:00pm) - Kagura Gondola (7:45am - 3:45pm) - Kagura Number 1 quad (8:00am - 3:00pm) - Kagura Number 1 romance pair (9:00am - 3:15pm) Opening as soon as there is enough snow - Joetsu Kokusai Saturday 11th December 2021 - GALA Yuzawa Friday 17th December 2021 - Ishiuchi Maruyama - Maiko Snow Resort Saturday 18th December 2021 - Kagura (via Tashiro) - Kandatsu Snow Resort - Naeba - Nakazato Snow Wood - Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Nakazato Friday 24th December 2021 - Muica Snow Resort - NASPA Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park Saturday 25th December 2021 - Chateau Shiozawa - Ipponsugi - Iwappara - Muikamachi Hakkaisan Late December - Hakkai Sanroku - Mt Granview Confirmed as not opening for the 2021-2022 season - Ishiuchi Hanaoka - Itsukamachi Yuzawa Now 2021-2022 season Data as of Sunday 5th December 2021 Total snowfall at base so far 14cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 4 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 6cm (27th November) November 2021 snowfall 10cm reported on 2 days December 2021 snowfall 4cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 16cm Posted on Monday 13th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. First up. Kagura is closed this morning. Strong winds being the reason. At the time of this report there is no info on how much snow they have received up there at Kagura - will update this later if we have that number. Unfortunately GALA seem to have taken their webcams offline (hopefully temporarily) so we can't take a look there either. Further down the mountains, there has definitely been snow. Around town areas just a little, getting more as you go higher. We were hoping for more, and let us hope that we do get some more during the day today - it is due to remain cold. Tomorrow and Wednesday clearer skies are forecast again before a return to snow at the end of the week. ----- Below are the planned opening dates of ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 14th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 17cm Posted on Tuesday 14th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Beautiful clear blue skies this morning. Yesterday that light snow did continue (rain to the north) but it didn't amount to much in terms of cm. There was no news of cm from Kagura yesterday, but this morning they are reporting 10cm of fresh snow 'since yesterday'. There was enough snow for them to re-open the Mitsumata area so there is 6,500m of runs now open at Kagura. Decent snow as we get into the weekend? That snow yesterday didn't turn out to be much at all, but decent snow at the weekend might well be happening! A whole bunch of ski areas were hoping to be open from this coming weekend as you can see in the list below. They will all be getting ready to open up just as soon as there is enough snow. ----- Below are the planned opening dates of ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. All are, of course, subject to change. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 36cm Snowfall at base this season 53cm Posted on Saturday 18th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. UPDATE 1PM More good news. Naeba and Joetsu Kokusai are both part open from this morning. From tomorrow, all of the ski areas that planned to be open this weekend are going to be able to be part open (the only unconfirmed exception being Nakazato Snow Wood). So that means that from tomorrow, Yuzawa Kogen, Kandatsu, Yuzawa Nakazato, Maiko Snow Resort and Ishiuchi Maruyama should be joining Kagura, Naeba and Joetsu Kokusai in being open. ----- Good morning from Yuzawa. Now this is more like it! It was raining until last night but overnight that changed into snow and this morning there's over 30cm of snow on the ground. It's just a start but always exciting to see the snow on the ground. More please. Lots of things happening this morning. As far as we can tell at the time of writing, it will still just be Kagura that is open today. Unfortunately we can't seem to get their information up this morning at the time of writing but I would expect they had a whole lot of snow up there overnight. Tashiro were planning to open today but due to weather conditions they have delayed that until tomorrow. GALA Yuzawa has announced that it will be opening from tomorrow (Sunday). Other ski areas that wanted to be open this weekend are on standby and assessing the situation. There will probably be other news later on today. So we will update this report this evening with any further information we find. ----- Ski area information: Saturday 18th December 2021 Below are the planned opening dates of ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. All are, of course, subject to change. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 19th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 65cm Posted on Sunday 19th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow continued through into night time yesterday but eased off overnight. Another 12cm since the report yesterday from down in town. Kagura are reporting 20cm. It's a lovely early morning. Some cloud around still, but the sun is out and some blue sky. Everywhere looks beautiful with the fresh snow we have got. And importantly, ski areas are starting to open up from today. There are now 10 ski areas open in Yuzawa and Mimamiuonuma (if you count Kagura as two!) Most are 'part open' and we'll bring you more details tomorrow as they become clearer. Kagura, both from Mitsumata and Tashiro bases, is largely open. They officially are saying that 23 of their 32 courses are available this morning. It looks like the small Nakazato Snow Wood ski area has decided to delay opening until Friday 24th December. Not a bad start, but we need consistent snowfall to keep this going and give us a good last week of the year. There is snow on the forecast - for later today, too. It doesn't look relentless like the middle of December last year, but hopefully we'll be happy. ----- Below are the planned opening dates of ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. All are, of course, subject to change. Now part open - GALA Yuzawa - Ishiuchi Maruyama - Joetsu Kokusai - Kagura (via Mitsumata) - Kagura (via Tashiro) - Kandatsu Snow Resort - Maiko Snow Resort - Naeba - Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Nakazato Friday 24th December 2021 - Muica Snow Resort - Nakazato Snow Wood - NASPA Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park Saturday 25th December 2021 - Chateau Shiozawa - Hakkai Sanroku - Ipponsugi - Iwappara - Muikamachi Hakkaisan Late December - Mt Granview Confirmed as not opening for the 2021-2022 season - Ishiuchi Hanaoka - Itsukamachi Yuzawa Now 2021-2022 season Data as of Sunday 19th December 2021 Total snowfall at base so far 65cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 8 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 36cm (18th December) November 2021 snowfall 10cm reported on 2 days December 2021 snowfall 55cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 20th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 79cm Posted on Monday 20th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was more snow overnight - 14cm of it just measured. Kagura are this morning reporting 10-15cm of fresh snow since yesterday, and a few other ski areas are saying 10cm. But Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort are both reporting 30cm. The snow has eased off but there is a lot of cloud around still. There are signs that it might clear up today. This morning we have added more operation details from around the ski areas (list below), including lift and course info. When available, we'll also make a note of the reported fresh snowfall. It would be great if all ski areas mention that information every day, but unfortunately it's just a handful who do... Here's where we stand at the moment: Most of the main runs of Kagura are now available from both the Mitsumata and Tashiro bases. A fair amount of Naeba is open. The top area of Maiko is open. The other ski areas are all in 'part open' mode as we want for the base to build up. Tomorrow might get to be milder than we would like, let us hope not too much. Next snow looks due for perhaps Wednesday and then decent snow is lined up for next weekend. That's when Santa comes, so he will definitely be expecting a good showing. ----- Below are the planned operations (and opening dates) of ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma area. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 23rd December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 80cm Posted on Thursday 23rd December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's a mix of cloud and some sun in places this morning. There was some rain going on last night again but it tried to turn into snow and certainly higher up left us with some new cm. This morning Kagura is reporting 5cm and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 5cm. Somewhat surprisingly Maiko are reporting 15cm. There's just what is a bit more than a dusting around town areas. Four more ski areas are planning on opening from tomorrow - NASPA Ski Garden, Yuzawa Park, Nakazato Snow Wood and Muica Snow Resort, with the rest of them opening on Saturday. As far as we can tell, they will be opening as planned - though to start off with they'll be in 'part open' status. The heavy snowfall across the upcoming weekend should really help places open up more, all being well. We have snow, but there's still not that much snow around lower levels in particular. A couple of days of consistent heavy snow can certainly quickly sort that out. ----- Kagura proclaim on their website that all areas are skiable, but at the same time that 23 of their 32 courses are open. It can certainly sound confusing. Perhaps the best description of the situation is that all of the areas are open - Mitsumata, Tashiro and Kagura. There are some courses that are not available, though. That's why we're keeping 'mostly open' in the list below for Kagura. ----- Below are the planned operations (and opening dates) of ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma area. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 26th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 48cm Snowfall at base this season 128cm Posted on Sunday 26th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Best morning so far, I would say. Lots of snow. Here's what ski areas are reporting: Yuzawa Kogen: about 50cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: about 50cm Maiko Snow Resort: about 50cm And I concur - just been out and measured 48cm and cleared the spot to prepare for the incoming snow that I will be able to report tomorrow. Kagura are being shy about new snowfall this morning. I suspect there is a lot. (Don't want to brag, after all. Or perhaps, scare some people off). But unfortunately the Tashiro Area is going to be closed today due to the weather conditions, and part of Kagura operations might be restricted too. Ski areas will be happy to be scrambling to cope and get runs open today, so expect more to be opening up - if not today, then surely tomorrow. The heavy snow is forecast to continue today and tomorrow so we can expect the numbers to start piling up. Just how we like it. This is why we are 'the original' Snow Country, of course. ;) ----- Below are the planned operations (and opening dates) of ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma area. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 27th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 48cm Snowfall at base this season 176cm Posted on Monday 27th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow has continued since yesterday. Easing off at times, but pretty much consistently coming down and destined to continue all the way through into late tomorrow. 30cm was measured on our measuring spot at 6pm last night. That was cleared off and there is another 19cm there this morning... so that's 49cm for the report today. We were actually expecting more snow overnight, but certainly can't complain - especially as more snow is coming over the next few days. Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting another 50cm, with Maiko Snow Resort, Yuzawa Kogen, and Kagura all seemingly reporting 30cm. Kagura and Naeba are both affected by wind again this morning it looks like there is some problem with the Tashiro Ropeway. Get over there if you have any spare spanners. Meanwhile the rest of us will just enjoy lots of shovelling. With all this new snow ski areas are increasingly approaching that 'fully open' status. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 28th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 76cm Snowfall at base this season 252cm Posted on Tuesday 28th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. In fact, it's a great morning when it comes to snow. At 6pm yesterday at our spot there was 30cm of new snowfall there since the morning report. The spot was cleared again and this morning there is another 46cm. So that's 76cm since yesterday morning. Here's the snow that ski areas themselves are reporting this morning: Kagura: 50cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30-50cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 60cm It's a bit windy out there and some lifts at some ski areas might be affected this morning. Unfortunately, Kagura is completely closed. The top area of Yuzawa Kogen is also closed with the Ropeway on standby. GALA Yuzawa appears to be opening as normal as are other ski areas. Tomorrow should see things be much calmer and perhaps even clearer. Conditions will be excellent. The sun might join in the fun. But beyond tomorrow more snow is due around Thursday and Friday, so it is definitely going to have been a very good second half of December for snowfall. ----- All information is manually checked each morning and is subject to change. Yes, after snow clouds doing their thing for a few days, the skies are clearer this morning and it's a beautiful start to the day. 22cm of new snowfall was measured (for our report) by yesterday evening... just a dusting since then. Kagura are reporting 10cm. Maiko reporting 2cm. Curiously, Yuzawa Nakazato are reporting 20cm (which is the same as us!). Different ski areas, different timings, different thinking... Whatever, it's a beautiful morning and conditions should be great. All ski areas close to or fully open. More snow is on the way for tomorrow and Friday in particular. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 30th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 275cm Posted on Thursday 30th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun was out yesterday and it actually warmed things up a bit. Felt rather mild and indeed this morning many of the official snow depth numbers reported by the ski areas have decreased. This morning ski areas are reporting a few cm of new snowfall overnight: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 5cm Maiko Snow Resort: 5cm Yuzawa Kogen: 5cm Kagura: 3cm There was just a thin layer to move from the car this morning. It still feels mild and we there is a chance we get some rain during the day today as it warms up to around +3C in town. But even if we do get that, it shouldn't last long and it should be snowing by tonight with a few days of snowfall expected tomorrow and the day after. All being well, we might be some more big snow numbers to report in the next few reports.
