The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The weekend brought us some borderline hot weather on Saturday and a mix of wind and rain that closed Kagura for the day yesterday. This morning it is still wet but there is less wind. Kagura is open this morning - they are down to just the main course now (though five lifts are needed to keep that one course open). It's the last week of the season and unfortunately it looks like the weather is going to be more rainy than sunny. Next report at the end of the week and then the last one of the season on Sunday. ----- Kagura 1 course is available: - Main course 5 lifts are operating: - Mitsumata Ropeway - Mitsumata Number 1 quad - Mitsumata Number 2 pair - Kagura Gondola - Kagura Number 1 quad The Dragondola is operating between Naeba and Tashiro, but it is for sightseeing purposes only. Kagura plans to be open until Sunday 23rd May. All other ski areas in the region are now closed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The very long season comes to an end today. After an unseasonably cool and rather wet May, it looks like we might get some mixed weather conditions today - some sun early morning, probably lots of cloud during the day and maybe some rain. Temperatures should be rising soon and no doubt we will be having another very hot summer. Summer skiing on artificial mats will be on offer on the Mitsumata slope of Kagura (about 1100m) and GALA Yuzawa (about 350m) as below: Kagura: Weekends & holidays from 10th July through 3rd October (plus 10th-13th August, 24th September) GALA Yuzawa: Weekends & holidays from 22nd July through 5th September The Fuji Rock Festival music festival is still hoping to go ahead this year over at Naeba (20th-22nd August). It looks like it will be a mostly Japanese artist line-up this year and they are of course planning various covid measures. As for the 2021-2022 winter season... hopefully that can get going at Kagura from late November. --------------------- A look back at 2020-2021 (Yuzawa version) After the disappointing snowfall in the 2019-2020 winter season, people were somewhat apprehensive about what to expect for 2020-2021. Would we be able to get back to what we are used to… heavy snow? The first snow of the season down to town level was recorded on 14th December 2020 and for a period of about a week it hardly stopped. It was relentless. 42cm, 96cm, 76cm, 38cm, 32cm, 51cm, 40cm. Over a span of seven days, the Yuzawa Now reports clocked up 375cm of snowfall. And remember, that’s down at town level. Incredible! The first 10 days of January was pretty impressive too. We were blessed with a deep (and rather sudden) base of snow, and that allowed the ski areas across the region to pretty much open as planned – though some had to spend time ‘dealing’ with it all. Having a good base right from the start is a great way to start the season and there were some excellent early season conditions for those here to enjoy it. The rate of snowfall started to slow down after that. We got fairly regular snowfall through February, but things warmed up more than we would have liked between the snowstorms and we did get some rain. Luckily we had that deep base. Only 9cm of snowfall was recorded at town level during the month of March (in the report on 3rd March), and that actually ended up being the last snowfall recorded down in town. That meant that the spring season felt particularly long this year. But even with a lack of fresh snow from March, that early deluge from mid-December through early January meant that snow cover was never been a problem. That would be enough of a story in any year but, of course, we also had the coronavirus situation to deal with this time. Tokyo went into that so called 'state of emergency’ in early January and while it was not a full-on lockdown, it certainly affected the number of people visiting the Yuzawa region. The situation made it somewhat awkward for ski resorts to go out there and pro-actively encourage people to come. And there were perhaps more day trips than overnight stays, which affected hotels and other accommodations. Some ski areas adjusted their operations to varying degrees. There were some disruptions mid-season. Some ski areas actually seemed to remain fairly busy. Some were extremely quiet. Some were more affected by the lack of inbound guests than others. But in the end, everyone has been affected. The archive Yuzawa Now reports can be read through any time, so for a detailed look back at the season please do check those out. We recommend the reports during that early season heavy snow! Those were exciting times. Everyone is of course hoping for a brighter worldwide travel situation come autumn. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and welcome back to the Yuzawa Now reports. We are now less than three weeks away from the planned opening of the upper areas of Kagura. There has been some snow on upper mountains, but currently Kagura is looking bare. It was a hot summer but temperatures dropped (seemingly suddenly) in October, though it's fairly comfortable autumn conditions at the moment. A few are still in autumn mode but most ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma are now busy preparing for the winter season. The general news in Japan has gradually been getting brighter, and people are hopeful for an improvement on last season - particularly with an increase in the number of domestic skiers and snowboarders. Travel restrictions remain for potential visitors from overseas. Hopefully that will change sooner than later. We will of course mention any such news in our reports this season. Last season we got some excellent snowfall in December. Let's have some more of that this time. Good, but not good enough for Kagura to open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We got some more snow yesterday - some rain too, and some thunder too at times. As of 3pm yesterday Kagura were reporting 30-40cm of snow since the previous day. They also said that they will be making an announcement as to whether they can open tomorrow (Monday) later on today. We will update this report later today if Kagura is going to open tomorrow. For now the snow has eased off. There was even a little sunshine just a short while ago, but that was soon to be covered by cloud again. Over the next few days we should expect temperatures to rise somewhat - the snow around town will probably disappear (very normal). The next snow is probably due at the end of the week, maybe some on the mountains around Wednesday. 4pm update: Kagura will open tomorrow! 4,000m of course will be available from Kagura back down to Mitsumata, all accessible via Mitsumata of course. They are reporting 80cm of snow at Kagura and 40cm at Mitsumata. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. There was some rain and then a little snow overnight down to town levels in Yuzawa. Not so much just to the north of central Yuzawa in the Minamiuonuma valley. And now it seems to be getting brighter and there is some blue sky appearing. It might be temporary though as the forecast does show the chance of snow through mid-morning. Kagura ski area are reporting 2-5cm of fresh snow. They are also reporting windy conditions that mean the Kagura quad won't be opening and be replaced by the Kagura Number 1 pair lift. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We got rained on in town last night but that thankfully turned into snow overnight. There is a fresh (thin) layer of snow on the ground around town areas. Kagura are this morning reporting 15cm of fresh snow and a temperature of -5C. There is still a lot of cloud around but it will probably start to clear and we may end up with a bright day. The coming week brings with it mild conditions and not much chance of fresh snow - except perhaps in the much higher areas, at the times when it will probably be raining down in town. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. First up. Kagura is closed this morning. Strong winds being the reason. At the time of this report there is no info on how much snow they have received up there at Kagura - will update this later if we have that number. Unfortunately GALA seem to have taken their webcams offline (hopefully temporarily) so we can't take a look there either. Further down the mountains, there has definitely been snow. Around town areas just a little, getting more as you go higher. We were hoping for more, and let us hope that we do get some more during the day today - it is due to remain cold. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Beautiful clear blue skies this morning. Yesterday that light snow did continue (rain to the north) but it didn't amount to much in terms of cm. There was no news of cm from Kagura yesterday, but this morning they are reporting 10cm of fresh snow 'since yesterday'. There was enough snow for them to re-open the Mitsumata area so there is 6,500m of runs now open at Kagura. Decent snow as we get into the weekend? That snow yesterday didn't turn out to be much at all, but decent snow at the weekend might well be happening! A whole bunch of ski areas were hoping to be open from this coming weekend as you can see in the list below. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. UPDATE 1PM More good news. Naeba and Joetsu Kokusai are both part open from this morning. From tomorrow, all of the ski areas that planned to be open this weekend are going to be able to be part open (the only unconfirmed exception being Nakazato Snow Wood). So that means that from tomorrow, Yuzawa Kogen, Kandatsu, Yuzawa Nakazato, Maiko Snow Resort and Ishiuchi Maruyama should be joining Kagura, Naeba and Joetsu Kokusai in being open. ----- Good morning from Yuzawa. Now this is more like it! It was raining until last night but overnight that changed into snow and this morning there's over 30cm of snow on the ground. It's just a start but always exciting to see the snow on the ground. More please. Lots of things happening this morning. As far as we can tell at the time of writing, it will still just be Kagura that is open today. Unfortunately we can't seem to get their information up this morning at the time of writing but I would expect they had a whole lot of snow up there overnight. Tashiro were planning to open today but due to weather conditions they have delayed that until tomorrow. GALA Yuzawa has announced that it will be opening from tomorrow (Sunday). Other ski areas that wanted to be open this weekend are on standby and assessing the situation. There will probably be other news later on today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow continued through into night time yesterday but eased off overnight. Another 12cm since the report yesterday from down in town. Kagura are reporting 20cm. It's a lovely early morning. Some cloud around still, but the sun is out and some blue sky. Everywhere looks beautiful with the fresh snow we have got. And importantly, ski areas are starting to open up from today. There are now 10 ski areas open in Yuzawa and Mimamiuonuma (if you count Kagura as two!) Most are 'part open' and we'll bring you more details tomorrow as they become clearer. Kagura, both from Mitsumata and Tashiro bases, is largely open. They officially are saying that 23 of their 32 courses are available this morning. It looks like the small Nakazato Snow Wood ski area has decided to delay opening until Friday 24th December. Not a bad start, but we need consistent snowfall to keep this going and give us a good last week of the year. There is snow on the forecast - for later today, too. It doesn't look relentless like the middle of December last year, but hopefully we'll be happy. ----- Below are the planned opening dates of ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was more snow overnight - 14cm of it just measured. Kagura are this morning reporting 10-15cm of fresh snow since yesterday, and a few other ski areas are saying 10cm. But Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort are both reporting 30cm. The snow has eased off but there is a lot of cloud around still. There are signs that it might clear up today. This morning we have added more operation details from around the ski areas (list below), including lift and course info. When available, we'll also make a note of the reported fresh snowfall. It would be great if all ski areas mention that information every day, but unfortunately it's just a handful who do... Here's where we stand at the moment: Most of the main runs of Kagura are now available from both the Mitsumata and Tashiro bases. A fair amount of Naeba is open. The top area of Maiko is open. The other ski areas are all in 'part open' mode as we want for the base to build up. Tomorrow might get to be milder than we would like, let us hope not too much. Next snow looks due for perhaps Wednesday and then decent snow is lined up for next weekend.
