The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It was cloudy yesterday, not much wind. But this morning there has been some snow. Not on their official site but Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike are both reporting 5cm of fresh snow in places this morning. 3cm is being reported from the Riesen area of Happo-one and Goryu also reporting 3cm. So it sounds like there's a thin layer of fresh across the mountains. It's just a dusting at base level and not enough for me to award 1cm to the report. There's limited visibility up there this morning. A high of around +4C later on and unfortunately a good chance of rain with us today, particularly later on and maybe heavy rain this evening. Grrrrr. The good news is that tomorrow should be slightly colder and there is still a chance of snow. Different forecasts are saying different things, so we'll just have to wait and see what nature brings us. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a cloudy morning with foggy conditions higher up so limited visibility. I have more fresh snow to report this morning. Just under 5cm here around base, but Hirafu is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall on upper areas. That sounds good! So head high. All the ski lifts are open as planned this morning. Once we get into this stage of the season, it gets increasingly likely that there will be times when there is snow at higher elevations and not much (or none) at base. And, perhaps like today, the quality of the snow might well be more fluffy the higher you get. (Having said that, perhaps we will get some decent snow at base over the weekend). While I don't live up on the mountain, of course, I will continue to report what I can and also always note the snowfall reported by the ski areas in the list below. You're going to have to put up with me for another 7+ weeks! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -1℃, light wind and 1cm snowfall, wet snow. Moiwa 800m: -2.4℃, W3.0m/s. Annupuri 1150m: -5.2℃, W4.4m/s, 15cm snowfall, wet snow, thick fog, bad visibility. Hirafu 1000m: -4.8℃, SSE2.5m/s, thick fog, bad visibility, 5cm snowfall. Peak ridge 1250m: -5℃, small snowdrift, good visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: WNW8m/s, Kamui cape: WSW5m/s, 1012hPa, 0.8m waves. The atmospheric gradient is flat, dense fog below 800m elevation due to heavy airmass changes. 15cm wet snowfall in some places mainly on the west side of the mountain range. The snow is heavy but good. Light wind and trees are covered in rime. Snow was hard to groom this morning but the piste condition is good. Based on the information from the groomer operators, ski patrols, observation and weather data, general avalanche risk is low. Gates will be open but it’ll take a little time. Steep slopes, cliff slopes, slopes under chairlifts are prone to surface avalanche due to the heavy new snow. Be careful. There are glide avalanches constantly occurring on south facing slopes under 700m elevation. Do not stay at the bottom of these slopes. Slopes over 1000m elevation are still winter. Cracks in Kozan no Sawa, Annupuri O-sawa, and Mikaeri Bowl are gradually getting bigger. There is a high possibility of a large-scale avalanche occurring after 20March to the first week of April. Avoid valley bottoms, this is where avalanches run. Road surfaces freeze in the morning and evening. Drive carefully. It may be spring at the base but it is still winter in the mountains. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I actually have some snow to report this morning. Just a bit. 2cm. And it is still snowing - lightly. That is, of course, great to see. Let's hope we get some more. The big problem today is pesky winds, which are preventing all top lifts from opening. The gondolas at Village and Annupuri are also on hold, as are all lifts at Hanazono apart from the gondola. ----- I can't believe I neglected to mention White Day yesterday! White Day (14th March) is that age-old Japanese tradition dating back to the Edo period when men give chocolates back to women who gave them chocolates a month earlier on Valentines Day. Sorry about that, I'll remember next year, for sure. ----- Please indulge me, this is entirely a personal comment/opinion from me: I won’t be specific, but if you have so much dislike for someone else's work – (work, I might add, that you consume freely and regularly) - that you really feel the need to vent your frustrations, here’s my advice. 1) Be polite. Or at least observe some basic common decency. 2) Try to be constructive and explain the feelings/reasons for your hatred. For example: if you were complaining about my reports, you might want to suggest that they would be improved by not mentioning toast, pesky winds, or making silly jokes about Valentines Day dating back to the Edo period. (And you might well be right!) Totally failing to observe the above two things really just makes you come across as an infantile troll who is not to be taken seriously. And it’s a bit pathetic, really. As much as I don't like the idea of feeding trolls, I just wanted to say that. Back to normal service! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -2℃, light wind and 1cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -4.3℃, SE4.0m/s. Annupuri 1150m: -6.9℃, SSE4.2m/s, snowing and bad visibility. Hirafu 1000m: -6.7℃, S17.6m/s, strong wind and bad visibility. Peak ridge 1250m: -7℃, strong wind, white out. Coastal data Benkei cape: SSE19m/s, Kamui cape: SSE4m/s, 1008hPa, 0.7m waves. A Southerly wind is blowing strong as a new low-pressure system is approaching. Snowfall is still small, but is forecasted to pick up. Poor visibility with strong wind on Hirafu side and a strong south wind is blowing at Benkei cape through the lowlands of Kuromatsunai. The wind will calm down as the low-pressure system passes, but the snow condition will be different between the base and peak of the mountain. Thaw will continue under 600m elevation, making it likely for glide avalanches to occur from the open cracks. Gates opening is undetermined. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. Moiwa gates 6 & 10 have been shut as the quad lift operation finished for the season. We’d like to thank the Moiwa Patrol for their hard work observing the Mikaeri cracks, out of bounds pattroling and rescue operations. The Niseko area’s safety is maintained by each resort’s patrollers. We strongly recommend not to go to the bottom of Kozan no Sawa (Back Bowl), O-sawa (Annupuri Bowl) and Mikaeri Bowl. This information is issued for everyone to assess the specific hazard of the day. Being aware of the hazard and being prepared for them can be useful to avoid accidents. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Unfortunately, this morning have to report some rain. Yes, it was raining last night, which is never something I like to report. It was quite heavy at times too. This morning I can see a slight kind of dusting of snow. Hanazono reports 1cm, other ski areas 0cm. And while it didn't feel particularly windy to me when I was outside a while back, all of the top lifts are not opening as planned due to wind up there. Pesky, indeed. The Annupuri Gondola is also affected, as is the (scheduled to be open this weekend) Jumbo Number 3 lift. Conditions will be.... spring-y, no doubt. I'd expect a bit of crust that will soften up as the morning progresses. If we hadn't already, I think we definitely need to adjust expectations to 'spring' now. Resets and the like will be a super nice bonus ('for your excite skiing lifestyles'). We might see some fresh snow falling again around Tuesday, so we can look forward to that for the chance of a reset/refresh. PS: Update as I am about to post at 8:30am --- light snow has started falling! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -1℃, moderate westerly wind, slight snowfall, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -2.4℃, WNW12.4m/s. Annupuri 1150m: -5.6℃, WNW9.6m/s, icy slopes difficult to groom. Hirafu 1000m: -5.5℃, 1250m: -5℃, strong westerly wind, light snowfall. Coastal data Benkei cape: NNW14m/s, Kamui cape: NW10m/s, 1011hPa, 1.2m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient got steeper and a westerly wind is blowing strong above 750m elevation. A shallow snowdrift of windblown snow is forming in leeward slopes. Cold airmass inflow occurred during the night and froze the surface. The avalanche risk is low today, however gates opening is undetermined. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The off-piste is in rough condition. Beware of crashing and falling into cracks and creeks. New cracks are forming in Gate 11 Muzuno no Sawa area and it is now shut for the season. We’d like to thank the Niseko Village patrol team for the hard work controlling the area safety throughout the season. The mountain season is shifting to Spring. The snow condition changes drastically during this time of the season, so please be alert at anytime. The snow will soften after 10am and should become easier for riding. Again it was quite cold early on and will warm up during the day with temperatures rising to somewhere between 5-10C in the village. Tomorrow will probably be more of the same. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The sun is shining through my window as I write this. Outside there's quite a lot of blue sky and some cloud up there too. It's a nice morning and feels quite mild. Oh yes, some fresh snow too. Mustn't forget that! Ski areas are reporting around 10cm on the slopes. All lifts should be open today. Mild temps will be continuing for the next stretch of days and we're probably going to enjoy some calm conditions and sunny skies. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -3℃, light wind, 5cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -5.1℃, W3.1m/s, 10cm new snow, small snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -7.9℃, WNW4.5m/s. Hirafu 1250m: -10℃, light wind, 5cm new snow. Hirafu 1000m: -7.5℃, E1.9m/s, calm. Coastal data- Benkei cape: WNW9m/s, Kamui cape: WSW8m/s, 1014hPa, wave 0.8m. There is no atmospheric pressure gradient, the seas and mountains are calm. Light wind and snow overnight developed some snowdrifts on the leeward side. Snow surface above 1000m elevation is rough and hard due to the storm from the day before yesterday. Major snowdrifts development around 800m elevation causing some delay on lift operation and recovery of some facilities. From observation and weather data, the general avalanche risk has dropped but the gates opening is depending on lift operation. Please respect the patrol's decisions. Snowmelt is continuing due to the temperature rise during the day and snow bridges can easily collapse. There are new cracks on SW facing slopes under 700m elevation due to the major snowdrifts development. Avoid riding alone as falling from those snow bridges and cracks can be fatal. Bring short ropes. Do not hang around at the bottom of gullies and steep slopes. Avalanches come from above. There is a 6cm layer of very light powder blanketing the ground in the village. Cloud is low but visibility on the mountain still looks to be okay. The temperature will rise to 0c during the day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Last night we had some very strong winds. I had to take a bit of a walk outside and the snow was being blown around big time. That probably accounts for the seemingly odd mixed-up snowfall numbers today as you can see below. And difficult to put a number on it. But my relatively shielded main measuring point has 7cm. There will be more in places. And less in others. It was snowing just lightly when I started writing this but right now it has got heavier. Really coming down just now and visibility has gone down too. That's not expected to last. Unfortunately, it's still windy enough at the start of the day to stop the top lifts at all four ski areas from opening. We can probably enjoy some sunshine and calmer conditions for a few days from tomorrow. ----- Just two more weeks of night skiing left in the Niseko region. Hirafu and Annupuri plan to be open in the daytime until 5th May, so there's two more months left there! Village and Hanazono plan to be open until 3rd April. Niseko Moiwa is also planning on being open until 3rd April. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -4℃, periodic strong winds, 20cm new snow, wind effected snow. Moiwa 800m: -6.4℃, NNW5.2m/s, 20cm new snow, major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -9.4℃, NNW7.7m/s, D:100cm L:250cm snowdrift development, strong gusts, good visibility. Hirafu 1250m: -10℃, N gusts to 15m/s, good visibility. Hirafu 1000m: -9.1℃, N12.1m/s, major leeward snowdrift development. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NNE9m/s, Kamui cape: E2m/s, 1011hPa, wave 2.5m. Stormy seas and a blizzard from the base to the top of the mountain raged until midnight. The isobars are starting to space apart and the weather is rapidly improving. There was major snowdrift development above 800m, measuring D:100-150cm in some locations. From observation and data, the general avalanche risk is starting to drop and all gates are expected to open. Please respect the patrol's decisions. The aeolian snow slabs have a high crystal density and are hard and heavy. During development and immediately after they break easily on weak layers causing slab avalanches. Also cornices break off further back than you would expect. An elevated avalanche risk continues above 1000m all day. It's still too early to get on high altitude open steep slopes. There is no safety in this sport. Have a good day.
