- Zao Now: Monday 16th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 209cm Posted on Monday 16th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The snow last night, though small but with large flakes, was very welcome. The slopes are hard still but the powder on top makes all the difference. It should soften up during the daylight (indeed Uwanodai is already softening up) and especially if the sunny patches appear this afternoon. The mist higher up moves up and down the mountain and is not constant. You can still see though. There is a bit of wind at the summit. Wind may make an appearance on the upper slopes during the latter half of the day. The slope down from the summit is mostly 'ice-burns' but there are softer patches on the sides to get an edge into. Beginners may still not enjoy the experience and may wish to save their thigh muscles by coming back down in the gondola to Utopia. Nice carving on Paradise but top tip for the morning is the Chuo bowl where there is thicker fresh snow and it is noticeably softer. The frosted trees are back but sadly the monsters are gone. I really wonder if they'll be back this season. Here's hoping Friday's forecasted dump is a good one along with the winds anticipated which actually form them. - Shiga Kogen Now: Monday 16th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 221cm Posted on Monday 16th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . We do have some fresh snow this morning. Just a modest amount - Yakebitaiyama are reporting 5cm. That's not enough for a full reset, so it's a few cm on the hard surfaces. We do expect some more snow during the day today. Probably modest amounts. It is colder again now, so that is something of a relief, though still not usual mid-January cold. - Niseko Now: Monday 16th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 499cm Posted on Monday 16th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After several days with no fresh snow, this is much better! 20cm+ on the ground giving us a nice new (and needed) layer. All of that came overnight. It is snowing (very) lightly as I write this and about -6C, with light snow forecast on/off over the next few days. Maybe enough to bring us more cm to report tomorrow. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -5C, light wind, 20cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -9.1℃, NNW3.3m/s, 20cm snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -11.8C, N3.8m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -10.8C, NNE1.2m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -11.4C, NNE5.1m/s, 20cm snowfall. Hanazono#3: -8.9℃, NNE2.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNE9m/s, Kamui cape N6m/s, 1014hPa, 1.9m waves. 20-30cm light crystal snowfall at pre-dawn. Cornices and snowdrifts are growing slowly above 800m, and rather rapidly above 1000m elevation due to the 10+m/s, NE wind. Shallow avalanches caused by ski-stimulation are likely to occur at knolls and leeward slopes under cornices above 800m. Do not drop simultaneously, traverse across steep slopes or gather at the bottom of the gullies. Gates are scheduled to open. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Rough and firm layer is lying underneath the soft snow, ride carefully. 50cm thick surface slab avalanches are expected in 1000m areas of the Backbowl sidewalls, Osawa cornice slopes, Mikaeri Bowl and East ridge. It is highly recommended to stay away from these areas. The snow in the tree-runs is good, but still shallow. Beware of hidden stumps and tree-bombs. Winter avalanches occur when wind-affected snow slabs collapse with stimulation. Do not ski leeward knolls and steep slopes on a windy day. Have you switched your beacon on? Do you carry a shovel, probe and a rope? Safety is never guaranteed in winter sports, but most accidents can be avoided if everyone is careful enough. Have a nice day. --------------- Ski area information for Monday 16th January 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 355cm Posted on Monday 16th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . There is some snow falling out there, but not a lot yet. We got 2.5cm or so (this form only allows full numbers, so it will say 3), so I can for the first time report for our non-metric friends that we got one inch of snow overnight. It's very sticky snow, made up of lots of little needle-shaped crystals. Fun to do some snow gazing on your sleeve while riding the lifts.... Colder temperatures have come in as the offshore winds have swung back to the northwest. Good news as we try to keep the snowpack from slowly disappearing. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 207cm Posted on Sunday 15th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The rain finally stopped in the wee hours of the morning turning into snow an d a literal light dusting. Th trees are slightly whiter again. It is snowing very lightly at the moment but expect it to increase slightly to provide a couple of cms. Same tomorrow but nothing significant until Friday. At least temps are now below zero. There is usual fog from upper Uwanodai but you can see where you're going It is not nice from resort level upwards. With the sudden drop in temperature, the slopes are very hard with ice pebbles and rocks strewn about by last night's piste bashers when the snow was soft. The only place I found remotely enjoyable was Ryuzan (see pic) which is slightly better and you can catch the World Cup Jump in its readiness for tonight's final. Probably the best overall will be the Omori slopes although the top bit has bad patches as it is lower down. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After that beautiful clear start yesterday, by lunchtime it was starting to get cloudy and overcast. We did get some rain overnight, but it isn't raining now. Just very cloudy (and foggy in places early morning). It is going to be another warm day though, with a chance of spots of rain during the day. Hopefully not more than that. OK so I'm ready for a return to colder temps and fresh snow now. Tomorrow will be colder, still above zero, and then Monday colder still. And there should be some snow in the mix there too, though forecasts don't show potential big numbers. A little snow yesterday morning, and then it did clear up to give us some nice sunshine and rare visual evidence that Mt Yotei does indeed exist! Snowdrifts below 900m are starting to stabilise with winds around 10m/s. Above 600m snow in the trees is reset with heavy wind blown snow. Conditions are a bit tricky though, take care not to hit a tree. Do not hang around in the valley bottom of Kozan no Sawa or Osawa. Do not drop into HigashiOne cornice face without care. An avalanche at 1000m will clean out the valley below. Do not duck Mizuno no Sawa ropes and get into Haru noTaki area. From snowfall data, risk is very high. Even if the top lifts run, avoid riding steep open slopes above the treeline today. There is no safety guarantee in this sport. Beacon? Helmet? Use them! By the way, I'm not posting the numbers that (I think) the ski area posted yesterday and this morning as they seem... really kind of odd. At the time of me writing my report anyway. There's some nice fresh snow out there from yesterday, though, and that's what matters. Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko: 210cm - Uenotaira: 170cm - Hikage: 130cm - Nagasaka: 120cm - Karasawa: 85cm All lifts now normally operating except these lifts: - Challenge pair (usually closed on weekdays) - Utopia pair (usually closed on weekdays) - Hikage quad (due to maintenance) All courses are now open except the following: - Mukobayashi - Hachiman - Kamoshika - Kandahar (restrictions) Planned night skiing (Nagasaka quad): - Every Saturday until 25th March 2023 Nozawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Wednesday 11th January 2023 Total snowfall at base 272cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 23 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 34cm (26th December and 4th January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 101cm reported on 13 days January 2023 snowfall 171cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen.
