Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata
New snowfall at base 1cm
Snowfall at base this season 207cm
Posted on Sunday 15th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here.
The rain finally stopped in the wee hours of the morning turning into snow an d a literal light dusting. Th trees are slightly whiter again.
It is snowing very lightly at the moment but expect it to increase slightly to provide a couple of cms.
Same tomorrow but nothing significant until Friday. At least temps are now below zero.
There is usual fog from upper Uwanodai but you can see where you're going
It is not nice from resort level upwards. With the sudden drop in temperature, the slopes are very hard with ice pebbles and rocks strewn about by last night's piste bashers when the snow was soft. The only place I found remotely enjoyable was Ryuzan (see pic) which is slightly better and you can catch the World Cup Jump in its readiness for tonight's final.
Probably the best overall will be the Omori slopes although the top bit has bad patches as it is lower down.
(Note: actual reported snowfall 0.5cm... rounded up for the report as 0.5 is not possible).
