The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Today (Sunday 26th May) is the last day of the official ski and snowboard season at Kagura - and in the Yuzawa area as a whole. It feels like it has been a very long 'spring season' this year but Kagura has done well remaining open like it has. Check the photos taken yesterday (below) - there is still a decent amount of snow up on that main slope, even after the strong winds, rain and then heat that we have experienced over the last week. Kagura could probably even extend their season a bit more if they really wanted to... but there is no such news and today is definitely the last day of operations, which are the same as yesterday. Down in town, yesterday was hot and today will probably be a bit hotter still. It is due to rise above 30C. Happily the humidity hasn't kicked in yet. Next up: the humid rainy season and then a hot summer. Yuzawa town is of course host to the popular Fuji Rock Festival which is held at the base of the Naeba ski resort from Friday 26th July until Sunday 28th July. This year the headline artists are The Chemical Brothers, SIA and The Cure with tons of other Japanese and overseas artists. We hope you have a good summer and see you in November. --- Yuzawa Now reports season wrap-up Originally posted on 6th May / Edited for today Here’s how much snowfall we have observed in Yuzawa town in each of the last seven winter seasons: 2018-2019 season: 1042cm 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm Over 10m of snow down at town level. Very nice. And there'll be quite a bit more than that at higher elevations. That is more than the last two seasons, about 2.5 times what we got in the rather sad-looking 2015-2016 season... though not as much as in that classic-for-snowfall 2014-2015 season. It’s interesting to see the final total numbers like that though, especially remembering how the snowfall was spread over the season. 778cm – that’s nearly 75% - of the total season snowfall had fallen by the end of January. Snowfall really dried up in the second half of February. But then we got some decent snowfall as late as in early April. Last season (2017-2018) the GALA Yuzawa resort closed on 22nd April 2018. This season GALA Yuzawa managed to remain open until 6th May. And while Kagura closes at the end of today (Sunday 26th May), there is still a decent amount of snow on the slopes up there. Let's hope that next season will get a lot of snow, ideally spread consistently across the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and welcome back to the Yuzawa Now reports for the 2019-2020 season. It has been a mixed bunch of weather since May, but it is now getting rather chilly in the evenings and it looks like there was a sprinkling of snow up on the top area of Kagura last night. It's always great to see those first dustings. Kagura (via the Mitsumata Ropeway) plans to open this season on Saturday 23rd November, so we are now just over two weeks away from those first tracks. (Hopefully). They had a pre-opening safety ceremony the other day so are gearing up for the season. Two bits of news to share with you this Friday morning: The downhill course from the Mitsumata area down to Mitsumata car park at the Kagura resort will not be opening this season. The reason is due to damage inflicted by the torrential rains during that powerful typhoon last month. They tried to fix it up but apparently there has not been enough time to get it sorted. The Kandatsu Kogen resort has re-named itself. The new name is 'Kandatsu Snow Resort' and it looks like there will be a few changes due over there. More on that later. We'll be back with another Yuzawa Now report next week with news on all the planned opening dates for ski resorts around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There is lots of cloud around this morning, but some blue sky too and the sun breaking through in places as well. There has been a really cool looking sea of clouds hanging over the Minamiuonuma valley early on - as you can see on the images below. You can also see some lovely autumn colours hanging on up at Yuzawa Kogen. It is going to be warmer over the weekend, perhaps even getting to over high teens at town level with not much chance of snow until at least the middle of next week. --- Kagura news: Until last season, during periods when only the main Kagura Area of the resort was open, you had to ski/board down a snow mat area or do some walking on the way over to the Gondola. But this season the resort is going to be operating the Mitsumata Number 2 pair lift - meaning you can ride the lift down there, eliminating the need to walk down there. --- Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Here we go! Yes, Kagura is opening from this morning so we are into the ski/snowboard season here in Yuzawa. The resort is reporting 30cm of snowfall overnight on the upper open areas and a snow depth of 50cm. And in an upgrade from what they said yesterday, they are going to get the Kagura Number 1 quad moving and 1500m of the main Kagura course is available. Access via the Mitsumata Ropeway. It is great to see snow on the ground around town too this morning. 12cm being measured both here in Yuzawa and to the north in the Ishiuchi area of Minamiuonuma. Light snow still falling in places but it is easing off and by evening some clouds may be clearing. Tomorrow we are expecting sun and temperatures around 10C in town so it will be noticeably warmer. The snow on the ground this morning may well disappear - though the first snowfall often does. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And it's a cracker. The sun is out and blue sky. Beautiful - made more so by the snow remaining on the ground. Lots of it around town might not last until tomorrow though as it is going to be a mild day perhaps rising slightly above 10C in town. Rain is due in town tomorrow as the mild conditions continue but hopefully it will be colder come Tuesday and bring with it more snow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Last night Yuzawa were saying they were hoping for 20cm looking at the forecast, and they seem to be reporting 10cm. The Kagura quad is back working again, as is the 1500m long course. The mountains are looking white again and in town areas there is a thin layer of snow in places. I think I can just about justify adding 1cm to the report this morning, as I feel that is representing the situation well. Right now there is quite a lot of cloud, but some clearings in the cloud too. Even some sun peeking through in places. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I was perhaps slightly over generous with my 1cm of snowfall added to the report yesterday. What was there quickly disappeared from lower areas, and we were rained on later in the day, but this morning we have a fresh layer of snow on the ground and everywhere is once again looking white. I am measuring just over 5cm. Kagura resort are this morning reporting 10-15cm of fresh snowfall. No word on expanded operations for the weekend at Kagura, though I would think that is surely a possibility. I will update this report later on today if I hear anything so do check back this evening. Naeba is also going to be part opening from tomorrow and we'll be updating the Naeba Now report later today. I'm pretty sure Joetsu Kokusai will not be opening tomorrow (they had a provisional planned opening of 7th December), so they'll be on standby. The weekly forecast doesn't seem to be showing as much snow potential as it was a few days ago, with a bit of a milder spell currently due early to mid next week. (That would definitely be a 'booooo!') The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing yesterday and actually quite heavily from time to time in the morning, but just a bit more on the ground since my previous report. Kagura are reporting 3cm of fresh this morning. The snow eased off later in the day. There is no more overnight and this morning we have cloudy skies over Yuzawa. The sun looks like it might even be trying to break through as well in places. More of Kagura is open for the weekend - the are opening the Panorama and Family courses as well as the main course and they have the Number 4 pair lift operating too. Note the earlier opening times for the weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After some rain yesterday (really heavy at times) we have had a bit of snowfall down to town overnight. Not as much as we'd like, just a few cm but more as you get higher up. Kagura are reporting 15cm of fresh snowfall and as you drive up to the Mitsumata Ropeway the amount on the ground gradually increases, getting less again as you continue on over to Naeba. OK, so here is the ski resort news as we have it: Kagura - Tashiro The Tashiro area of Kagura will open as planned from tomorrow. Other resorts The other ski resorts in the area that were planning on opening tomorrow will all be delaying opening. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. This morning it is raining down in town; Kagura is reporting 2cm of snow and snow falling higher up. NASPA Ski Garden was originally planning to open from today and as you can see below there is a large number of ski resorts around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma that were planning on being open from tomorrow. Those openings are not going to be possible. They are all now waiting. As we all are. The lack of snow is of course worrying - the prospect of not being able to open for Christmas is a real blow. So everyone involved is looking to the forecasts for good news. But we can't do anything about it other than wait and hope. After today, around Monday is still looking like the best chance for some decent snowfall. Kagura are reporting 15cm of fresh snowfall; Naeba are reporting 10-15cm; there's just a few cm of so down to town areas. (Just for the record. It was rain last night so glad that it turned into snow. I've totally had my fill of rain for this year. It's starting to get really annoying.) We are forecast sunshine tomorrow and milder temperatures again, but you all want really promising news and so: HEAVY snowfall looks due for Friday. If Nature co-operates and the forecasts are right, it should be enough for ski resorts to open up. For the moment and as far as I can tell, resort operations remain unchanged this morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and Happy Christmas! We would all prefer much more snow, of course, but what can you do! I promise to be chirpy and cheerful this morning! It was trying to snow at times during the day yesterday down in town (more successfully snowing higher up and I noticed over at Naeba too), though it never really got going so while there was probably a few more cm at higher elevations there is none to report at town base. It is a beautiful clear and sunny Christmas morning. There is layer of frost on the car windscreen and a moderate southerly wind. Just taking a moment to take in the beauty of our mountains. Good news this morning is that GALA Yuzawa is opening their Melody and Entertainment courses this morning - so you can ski and snowboard at GALA again now. They are reporting 30cm of snow; so it's not deep and there may be bushes. But it's open and available! Yuzawa Kogen is operating the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway and they have a sledding play area open but note that there are no skiing or snowboarding courses open there yet.
