Cloudy conditions this morning and it looks like limited visibility again higher up. Weather over the next few days appears to be a mix of cloud, rain, wind, and perhaps even some light snow higher up (tomorrow night?). I hope wind won't mess around with operations. I enjoy me some 'spring skiing'. Obviously, peak season powder is better. But spring offers a much more relaxed feel, significantly less people around, and often some nice weather. Even so, there is always a point in a season when I get that 'OK I'm done' feeling. And I think I'm there. I totally respect the folk that continue on right through the end, and admire the dedication, but once the snow starts getting brown tinges, feels a bit sticky, and there hasn't been any proper fresh for weeks, it largely looses its appeal for me. I am, of course, very fortunate to be able to sample the goods throughout the season and so have been able to enjoy my fair share. I might be tempted out again. But maybe not. Another sunny, warm day—but the snow held up all the way to the base at Akakan, which doesn’t even happen on heavy snow years sometimes. Lots of kosa dust all over central Japan today, which will give us more whiteish skies (and a swear that I can taste some dry grittiness. Probably psychosomatic). I’m watching the instructors at one of the local ski schools packing up and getting ready to head to their respective homes. Not a lot of call for lessons at the end of the season, although there are a lot of first-timers out there, even this late in the season. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Rain and a mite grim today, but heavy snow is forecast for tomorrow. Even Tokyo might get get some snow as well. So some coffee, a nice fire and some indoor activities today, winter may come back tomorrow. A lot of new snow on this settled snow could be a bit dangerous in the backcountry, too, as well as on some slopes in the resorts, with the risk of cracking and gliding slopes still there. I have to make a correction, too: I read Madarao's report referring to a “victim,” when in fact four people were caught in the on-slope avalanche there over the weekend. Avalanches are the big news to start the week; not big, roaring ones but slow cracking and creeping ones that take all the snow out to the ground (I remember these used to be called climax avalanches, but now are referred to as wet slabs, glide avalanches or persistent deep slabs). This has been an issue for much of the season, but now with warming weather (and rain), we’re seeing Lotte Arai closing some runs and preparing for the potential of slides. The top run at Akakura Onsen had a crack and glide that released down onto the cat track last month (the lower section, no longer a ski run, almost always cracks and collapses). On the 28th, a pretty big one occurred on the Powder Line course at the top of Madarao, which actually resulted in an injury. According to the resort’s report, it was up to 185 meters wide, and had a length of 600 meters. It’s unusual that there were no warning signs; normally the slope literally cracks and begins to slide slowly before releasing at some point. So one more unusual event in a really unusual year for the snow. Take a look a those snowpack figures, too; lots of resorts are under a meter now. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Happy March, and spring is here today. Another day of sun following fog and rain; a good day to go out and explore the woods (which I am about to do). Nice to see lots of Japanese faces on the hill as well; no offense to our international guests, but you do want to see the locals coming to slide as well. Next up: will we actually get much more snow in this last month of the season? There’s not much on the forecast, but maybe next week? I would like to get a little more use out of that snowthrower (the second-most-expensive vehicle I own). The Champion No. 3 lift, the link from Akakura Onsen to Akakan, apparently broke down yesterday, with guests being lowered on harnesses, and is not running today. We got some interesting fog during a day of pure blue skies yesterday; suddenly things got soupy in the afternoon, then the fog/clouds would blow off again. It’s kind of a bright gray day today, with the sun not out exactly, but with some blue sky showing in patches above the mountains. It’s kind of shocking how much snow we’ve lost, though. The north side of my driveway where the sun hits is bare of snow and ice, and even a bit of the grass is showing. It remains a very strange snow year. I’m proud to say, when people ask, that I have no idea what things are going to do. I got a call from the head of the local fire department, who wanted to get a message out to the international community, and while it’s not directly related to snow, it is with the cold weather of snow season (and we have a pretty extensive audience here at SnowJapan for whom this has meaning). Apparently, a recent fire in our neighborhood was caused by someone putting gasoline into one of the ubiquitous kerosene stoves we use for heat here. The result was not good, and it’s not the first time this has happened. An acquaintance lost his cabin a few years ago when he lent it out to a friend who put gasoline into the stove, fired it up, and barely got out alive. So, a public service announcement: don’t put gasoline into a kerosene stove. It was raining sometime in the middle of the night, causing me to wake for a moment and think, “Blech.” It’s snowing now, but I’m not sure if it’s so much less blech-y. The snow, which was pretty warm and soft yesterday, is now going to be hard an crunchy. Maybe not so much for the resorts, depending on their grooming regimen, but anywhere out there in the natural snow (this comes from snowshoeing on some pretty fun, soft stuff yesterday). Waiting for the snow; a little bit started to fall in the early morning, it’s bright with a bit of sun now but it looks like we’ll be getting snow through the day today at least. I took a family drive along the coast to Toyama yesterday (big box store and year-end fun shopping) and it was really raining and blowing along the coast. I had hoped that storm was bringing snow to the high country, but things were actually calm and dry on the return. It was kind of fun to see the power out over the ocean, though, that brings the big snows to this part of the world. We do need it. There are some pretty thin spots out there where lots of people are sliding. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A beautiful sunny day in Myoko as we get closer to the end of the year. We don’t want too many of these nice days, of course, because we still need more snow on the ground. A good start, but just the beginning. Got out for snowshoeing yesterday, which was great on the trail, but tough to get out into the woods. There is so much brush that you really can’t move much without winding around through the trees and pushing small trees out of the way. Pretty tired legs, too, so this is a lazy Sunday report. Looks like an even warmer day tomorrow, then maybe some ongoing snow after that? A relatively quiet spot gave a figure of 63 total cm of new, including the 20cm I reported yesterday. And it’s sunny, but not too much, and still cold! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another day with some good snow falling. To start out, though, we did not feel last night's earthquake—lots of people have already asked about that. The bigger question is whether this is just a precursor for a bigger one in Tohoku or Hokkaido. Give me tornadoes (a hint about my background); earthquakes are not fun. Not sure if the early-opening resorts are going to be able to get going this weekend, but it looks like Friday could have some pretty heavy snowfall.
