Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 3cm
Snowfall at base this season 450cm
Posted on Friday 11th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.
Yesterday started off very cold. In fact, I had trouble opening my garage door and for a short while was worried a morning on the slopes might not happen. Happily I was able to get it open and enjoy most of the day on the snow.
We saw some sunshine for lots of the day with a bit of wind and with periods of more cloudy skies - sometimes rather dark and moody looking. But we ended up with nice clear skies again before it got dark.
It is much (much) milder this morning and light wet snow has been falling. It isn't as cold but it does not look like temperatures should rise by much at all during the day, keeping fairly close to zero maybe just above.
There is some rather wet snow on the ground around town areas. Higher up it seems that more snow has fallen as Kagura are reporting 15cm of fresh. Maiko Snow Resort are also reporting 10-15cm, presumably at upper areas.

Monday is national holiday in Japan - 'Seijin-no-hi' (Coming of Age Day).
Right now the forecast is for generally fine and calm weather conditions with a good chance of sunshine from tomorrow through Monday. The ski resorts will likely be very happy to hear that. Let's just hope that it doesn't warm up too much.
The rest of us will very probably be hoping for a delivery of fresh snow by the end of the long weekend, and that next snow is currently forecast for around Wednesday.
